Description: WILLIAM CLARK (GREENOCK, 1803-1883) The 'Hanover' of Glasgow flying the House Flag of Stirling & Gordon Signed 'W. Clark 1839' (left of middle). Inscribed on contemporary label to reverse 'No. 3 portrait of Hanover of Glasgow, Clark 1839' Oil on canvas 24 x 36in. (61 x 91.5cm.) Built and launched by Scott of Greenock in 1826, the 290 ton barque Hanover was one of a small fleet of eight vessels built over the years for the West Indian sugar traders Stirling & Gordon of Glasgow, making many round trips to Jamaica. Hanover served her original owners until 1843, when she was sold to W. Blues of Leith for their Africa trade. By 1846 she was transferred to Halket & Co. of London and was absent from Lloyd's Register by 1848. An earlier painting by Clark dated for 1830 depicts Hanover arriving in the Clyde just as her consort, the Christian, departs. ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM CLARK (1803-1883) The barque

Lot 127: ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM CLARK (1803-1883) The barque

Auction Date: Nov 17, 2010

Estimate: £3,000 - £5,000

Description: ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM CLARK (1803-1883) The barque 'Adelaide', as she appeared on Friday 4th February 1853 oil on canvas 28 x 41 1/2in (71.2 x 105.4cm)
Provenance: The Tremearne Family, by descent. The painting depicts a fire on the barque 'Adelaide' (492 Tons) while travelling on a voyage from Australia to London in February 1853 (via the Cape of Good Hope). In the course of the incident the Master of the Ship ,Captain Tremearne together with his officers and crew displayed great skill and bravery in saving the barque. The incident was widely reported in both Australian and English papers of the time. This particular picture is believed to have been presented to Captain Tremearne by the grateful owners of the ship. He was also presented with other gifts by the ship's Insurance Officer and Underwriter including (according to the Mercantile Navy List) a gift of ú1000 and a silver tea service for 'his unceasing attention'. The painting is a fine example of narrative ship portraiture. The threat of imminent disaster from fire is instantly apparent from the smoke arising from the region of the after deck and the master's measures to cope with the emergency are clearly portrayed. The passengers distinguished by their bonnets, shawls, top hats and great coats have been transferred to the long boat being towed astern, as an early precautionary measure. Crew members on the poop appear busy assembling small bundles or packets handed up from the after deck. This is probably the gold bullion and mail, normally stowed in the master's cabin for security, but now all piled up on deck under his supervision should the fire gain the upper hand and the crew be forced to abandon ship. The unusual appearance of her sails results from the courses and spanker (the sails immediately above the deck) being stowed to minimise the risk of the fire spreading to the rigging. However, the helmsman at the wheel and the fact that topsails, topgallants and royals are all set and drawing indicate that the master, having taken every possible precaution is still determined in his attempts to make port. In the event Tremearne was successful. Seven days later on 11th February 1853 the 'Adelaide' reached Port Louis, Mauritius where it underwent urgent repairs. At the same time from Mauritius a correspondent sent a communication to the Adelaide Observer "To Tremearne Energy, Perseverance and Presence of mind is due, under Providence the ultimate safety of the passengers, the ship and the valuable cargo. The gold is safely lodged in the bank, the copper is all safe. The whole of the wool is more or less damaged by fire or water, upwards of 100 or 150 tons of water having been poured down into her hold. The stauncheons and beams of the ship are more than half burnt through and her decks and cabins more or less destroyed. Meanwhile the Passengers issued a testimonial signed by all - 'To Captain A.K.N. Tremearne, Barque 'Adelaide' - Dear Sir, we the undersigned, passengers on the Barque 'Adelaide' saved by the Almighty from destruction by fire in that vessel cannot allow the present opportunity to pass of expressing our most heartfelt thanks....' Adelaide later reached England safely and afterwards continued to ply its trade between England and Australia. Two years later in 1855 the Adelaide Observer recorded that the barque had arrived at the Lightship Anchorage, Adelaide after a "tempestuous voyage from the meridian of the Cape..... part of the bulwarks and an iron bunker having been washed away and the skylights stove in"
