      Jean-Maxime Claude,  French 1824-1904-  Landscape in Saint-Valery-en-Caux;  oil on canvas, signed 'Max Claude' on the upper stretcher bar, bears old label inscribed 'Paysage à St Valery en Caux'  attached to the upper stretcher bar, 28.2 x 42.6 cm.  Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.  Note:  Claude studied with the decorative painter Pierre-Victor Galland (1822-1892). He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1861, winning medals at the Salons of 1866, 1869, and 1872. Although Claude's paintings exhibit a particular interest in equestrian subjects, often depicting hunting and racing scenes, marine scenes and landscapes also frequently appear in his oeuvre. The present work is characteristic of Claude's landscapes, with its low horizon opening up the composition, and drawing the viewer's attention to the great expanse of cloudy sky above.
