Lot Essay: Antoni Clave was a renowned painter, sculptor, and set designer, often associated with the Spanish Surrealist and Expressionist movements. Known for his rich textures and dynamic compositions, his works frequently incorporated collage and abstracted figures, and his artistry extended to theatre and film, showcasing his multifaceted creativity. Born in Barcelona on April 5, 1913, Clave began attending evening courses in 1926 at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios "Llotja," the same school Picasso and Miro had attended in their youth. The following year, one of his teachers helped him secure a position as a house painter's apprentice, a role that fed his growing fascination with the hands-on nature of painting, especially the materials involved, such as learning to prepare paints himself. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Clave served as a draughtsman for the Republican government before being forced to flee to France. Throughout the 1940s, his work bore the stylistic influence of Bonnard and Vuillard, until a 1944 meeting with fellow Spanish expatriate Pablo Picasso marked a pivotal turning point in his style. Clave remained forever grateful for the encounter, and he cherished his lifelong friendship with the man he affectionately called "Don Pablo." From 1946 onward, Clave created numerous designs for ballet and theatre productions in Paris, Munich, London, and New York, and by the 1950s he had also turned to book illustration. His work on the 1952 film "Hans Christian Andersen" earned him two Academy Award nominations, for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. Today, his art is held in major museum collections around the world, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the British Museum in London.

Measurements: 76 x 56 cm; 92 x 72 cm (frame). Antoni Clavé is one of the most relevant figures of Spanish contemporary art. Formed in the School of Fine Arts of San Jordi of Barcelona, Clavé is dedicated in a first period to the advertising graphism, the illustration and the decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, in the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. That same year, 1939, he exhibits the drawings he made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognized in Spain, after his exhibition at the Gaspar Gallery in Barcelona in 1956. At the same time, he made illustrations for the work "Gargantua and Pantagruel", which led him to become familiar with medieval iconography. In this same decade of the fifties is when he began his intense work in the world of ballet and theater, achieving great fame in the world of international scenography. In 1952 he made the sets for the film "Hans Christian Andersen", by Charles Vidor, and was nominated for an Oscar award. In 1954, he abandoned set design to devote himself to painting. He received awards at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennial in 1954 and at the International Biennial in Tokyo in 1957. In 1984 the Spanish State recognized his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Clavé's work can be found, among many others, in the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao, the Tate Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid.

In this work, the title alludes to a figurative motif; however, it is reinterpreted from a profoundly abstract perspective. Far from naturalistic representation, Clavé transforms the subject into a visual structure dominated by the contrast between black and red, two colors that in his late-1960s work take on a strong expressive charge. Red is associated with vitality and energy, while black introduces density, depth, and an almost tactile dimension to the pictorial surface. This period coincides with the consolidation of the so-called “language of matter” in the artist’s work. Influenced by European Informalism and the aesthetics of the found object, Clavé incorporates fragments, textures, and traces into his compositions that give the painting a physical and almost sculptural character. The surface ceases to be a mere support and becomes an active space where time, memory, and the experience of the gesture are inscribed. Fruits Noir et Rouge also fits into an international context of great prominence for the artist, who was based in Paris and widely recognized on the European art scene. During these years, his work was characterized by a growing formal synthesis and a compositional freedom that allowed him to oscillate between evoked figuration and total abstraction. The result is a visual universe of intense visual power, in which objects dissolve in favor of their chromatic and material essence. Antoni Clavé trained at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi in Barcelona and began his career in graphic design, illustration, and the decorative arts. After the Civil War, he went into exile in France and settled in Paris, where he came into contact with artists such as Vuillard, Bonnard, and Picasso. Beginning in 1954, he devoted himself fully to painting, evolving toward an increasingly material, symbolic language close to Informalism. His work is represented in institutions such as the Reina Sofía Museum, the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, and the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. Work made in 1953, in a particularly significant moment in the career of Antoni Clavé, when the artist, already installed in Paris, progressively leaves behind the more descriptive figuration to enter into a language of greater material, symbolic and constructive density. Under the title "Still Life", Clavé transforms the traditional genre of still life into a composition of great plastic intensity, where objects are not presented as immediately recognizable elements, but as signs, fragments and presences that emerge from a dark and vibrant background. The work stands out for its powerful internal organization. On a base dominated by blacks, earths and ochers, fiery reds, blues and whites burst forth, structuring the composition and directing the eye towards the central core. The vegetal forms, the containers and the suspended elements seem to float in an ambiguous space, between the table, the stage and the wall, reinforcing a more poetic than purely descriptive reading of the still life. In this piece we can see the mark of Clavé the stage designer and the artist attentive to the expressive power of matter. The composition has something of a silent theater: the objects are arranged like actors on a stage, illuminated by chromatic hallmarks and by a dense, free and textured brushstroke. The still life thus ceases to be a domestic representation to become a visual construction of great strength, close to the material informalism that would mark much of his later production. Antoni Clavé was one of the fundamental figures of Catalan art in the second half of the 20th century. Trained in Barcelona and settled in Paris after the Civil War, he developed an extensive career as a painter, engraver, sculptor and set designer. His work evolved from an expressive figuration towards languages close to informalism and material abstraction. In this series, the royal motif is combined with the pipe as an attribute, creating an image that straddles the line between the ceremonial and the everyday. The figure is treated not as a courtly portrait, but as a symbolic presence, constructed through smudges, graphic elements, glazes, and textural overlays. The pipe introduces an everyday and even ironic nuance into the representation of the monarch, distancing it from the traditional solemnity of the royal portrait. In "Cabeza de niño", Clavé starts from the traditional motif of the child portrait to subvert it in a radical way. The image does not seek sweetness or idealization, but transforms the child's face into a disturbing, fragmented and deeply expressive presence. Between blues, blacks and grays, the head emerges as an eroded mask, crossed by fillings, dark strokes and areas of matter that intensify its psychological charge. The work belongs to a particularly relevant moment in Clavé's evolution, when his language begins to abandon the more narrative figuration to enter into freer, more material and dramatic solutions. The childish features are barely recognizable -eyes, mouth, oval face-, but they are subjected to a plastic tension that anticipates the later importance of the mask, the trace and the matter in his production. The cold, dark palette gives the portrait an introspective and almost spectral atmosphere. More than a portrait, the work functions as an interiorized image, where the figure is transformed into an emotional sign. Because of its early date, its expressive force and its relation to the transition towards the more material Clavé, it is a piece of special interest in his career. In "Roi à la pipe", Antoni Clavé works one of his great iconographic territories: the figure of the king, converted here into a frontal, enigmatic and deeply material presence. The character does not appear as a courtly portrait or as an emblem of stable authority, but as a mask constructed from fragments, incisions, stains and adhered papers. The face emerges from a dark, eroded and complex surface, where the eyes, the mouth and the pipe can be recognized between layers of matter and signs. The work belongs to a particularly relevant moment in Clavé's production, when his language fully delves into experimentation with collage, texture and print. The figure of the king, recurrent in his imaginary, allows him to dialogue with historical and theatrical tradition from a modern, almost archaeological perspective: power is transformed into a vestige, a worn-out image, an ambiguous icon. The incorporation of reds, blues and whites over a dominant range of blacks, greens and ochers provides visual tension and reinforces the expressive intensity of the whole. Because of its date, format, technique and iconographic power, "Roi à la pipe" is a work of remarkable entity within the Clavian universe. The combined use of oil and collage on panel underlines the objectual dimension of the painting, while the Artur Ramon Gallery label adds a particularly significant documentary interest and provenance. It is a resounding piece, fully linked to the Clavé of maturity, in which figure, matter, historical memory and scenographic sense converge. Antoni Clavé studied at the San Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and began his career linked to graphic design, illustration and decorative arts. After the Civil War he went into exile in France and settled in Paris, where he came into contact with artists such as Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. From 1954 onwards he devoted himself fully to painting, evolving towards a more and more material, symbolic and informalist language. His work is represented in institutions such as the Reina Sofia Museum, the Tate Gallery, the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao.

Formed in the School of Fine Arts of San Jordi of Barcelona, Clavé is dedicated in a first period to the advertising graphism, the illustration and the decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, in the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. That same year, 1939, he exhibits the drawings he made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognized in Spain, after his exhibition at the Gaspar Gallery in Barcelona in 1956. At the same time, he made illustrations for the work "Gargantua and Pantagruel", which led him to become familiar with medieval iconography. In this same decade of the fifties is when he began his intense work in the world of ballet and theater, achieving great fame in the world of international scenography. In 1952 he made the sets for the film "Hans Christian Andersen", by Charles Vidor, and was nominated for an Oscar award. In 1954, he abandoned set design to devote himself to painting. He received awards at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennial in 1954 and at the International Biennial in Tokyo in 1957. In 1984 the Spanish State recognized his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The exhibition was part of the section "In the wake of El Greco...", focused on modern artists whose career reveals the influence of El Greco. Antoni Clavé is among the most outstanding figures of 20th century art, deeply marked by the imprint of El Greco. The admiration he felt for the Cretan master gave rise, during the 1960s, to a series of drawings, engravings and paintings conceived as a tribute to his legacy. These works show how contemporary artists found in the great masters of the past a constant source of inspiration, establishing a dialogue between tradition and modernity. In Clavé's case, this period is particularly significant, as it represents a moment of transformation in his career, marked by his determined advance towards abstraction. The expressive intensity and the motif of El caballero de la mano en el pecho thus become a recurring reference, whose imprint will be projected in numerous later creations. This restricted use of color is related to his interest in lyrical abstraction and the poetics of the fragment, where the remains of forms, signs or graphics suggest rather than describe. In 1965, Clavé was consolidating his definitive step towards languages increasingly closer to abstraction, progressively moving away from the more recognizable figuration of previous stages. In 1984 the Spanish State recognized his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Clavé's work can be found, among many others, in the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao, the Tate Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. Work intervened on both sides.

This work is part of the abstract language that began to develop from the 1940s onwards. It is a collage whose basic characteristic is the conception of the pictorial surface as a whole, as an open field, without limits and without hierarchy. Thus, as we see here, the pictorial forms of experimentation, pure stain and gestural brushstrokes, are not limited to a composition but go beyond it, indicating to the spectator that they are forms, ideas or suggestions that go beyond the boundaries of the purely pictorial. This idea of rupture and freedom in pictorial language can be seen not only in the use of forms, but also in the introduction of elements such as collage. Antoni Clavé is one of the most important figures in Spanish contemporary art. Trained at the San Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Clavé initially devoted himself to advertising graphics, illustration and the decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, joining the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. That same year, 1939, he exhibited the drawings he had made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognised in Spain, with his exhibition at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona in 1956. At the same time he produced illustrations for the work "Gargantua and Pantagruel", which led him to become familiar with medieval iconography. It was in the 1950s that he began his intense work in the world of ballet and theatre, achieving great fame in the world of international stage design. In 1952 he made the sets for the film "Hans Christian Andersen", by Charles Vidor, and was nominated for an Oscar award. In 1954 he abandoned set design to devote himself to painting. He was awarded prizes at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and at the Tokyo International Biennale in 1957.
