ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media (oil, watercolor and collage) on paper.

Lot 42: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media (oil, watercolor and collage) on paper.

Auction Date: Nov 16, 2021

Estimate: €3,000 - €3,500

Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media (oil, watercolor and collage) on paper. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 21 x 16 cm; 37,5 x 32 cm (frame). Antoni Clavé is one of the most relevant figures of Spanish contemporary art. Formed in the School of Fine Arts of San Jordi of Barcelona, Clavé is dedicated in a first period to the advertising graphism, the illustration and the decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, in the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. That same year, 1939, he exhibits the drawings he made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognized in Spain, after his exhibition at the Gaspar Gallery in Barcelona in 1956. At the same time, he made illustrations for the work "Gargantua and Pantagruel", which led him to become familiar with medieval iconography. In this same decade of the fifties is when he began his intense work in the world of ballet and theater, achieving great fame in the world of international scenography. In 1952 he made the sets for the film "Hans Christian Andersen", by Charles Vidor, and was nominated for an Oscar award. In 1954, he abandoned set design to devote himself to painting. He received awards at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennial in 1954 and at the International Biennial in Tokyo in 1957. In 1984 the Spanish State recognized his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Clavé's work can be found, among many others, in the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao, the Tate Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the British Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid....

Lot 75: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media on cardboard.

Auction Date: Nov 16, 2021

Estimate: €16,000 - €18,000

Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media on cardboard. Signed and dedicated in the lower left corner. Measurements: 100 x 70 cm; 125 x 93 cm (frame). In general terms, Clavé's work is difficult to classify due to the absence of formal limits in his art. Clavé's early works, intimate and tending towards abstraction, evolved towards a more expressionist style, arising from the concerns provoked by the post-war political, social and ideological reality in which Clavé lived. Antoni Clavé is one of the most relevant figures of Spanish contemporary art. Trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jordi in Barcelona, Clavé was initially dedicated to advertising graphics, illustration and decorative arts. ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "Retour du Japon", 1986. Mixed media and collage with wood on canvas.

Lot 78: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "Retour du Japon", 1986. Mixed media and collage with wood on canvas.

Auction Date: Nov 16, 2021

Estimate: €16,000 - €18,000

Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "Retour du Japon", 1986. Mixed media and collage with wood on canvas. Attached certificate signed by the artist himself. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Signed, dated and titled on the back. Measurements: 80 x 65 cm; 100 x 75 cm (frame). The series "Retour du Japon" reveals Clavé's close relationship with Japanese culture. Created between 1986 and 1987, it consists of a series of works in which the author captures the impressions received during his stay in the country. The presence of contrasting colors and the influence of the Zen spirit and Taoism are the distinctive features of the series. Clavé presented his first paintings of this series in 1986 at the Chozo Yoshii gallery in Paris, the same year in which he held four exhibitions in as many museums in Japan: the Metropolitan Teien in Tokyo, the National Art Museum in Osaka, the Kiyoaru Shirakaba and the Yamanashi-Ken in Hakone. The following year, in 1987, he will present the series at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona. Antoni Clavé is one of the most relevant figures of Spanish contemporary art. ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005).

Lot 86: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005).

Auction Date: Oct 19, 2021

Estimate: €20,000 - €25,000

Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled, 1982. Collage, ink and oil on cardboard. Signed and dedicated in the lower left corner. Enclosed certificate of authenticity issued by Archives Antoni Clavé. Size: 120 x 100 cm; 150 x 130 cm (frame). This work is part of the abstract language that began to develop from the 1940s onwards. It is a collage whose basic characteristic is the conception of the pictorial surface as a whole, as an open field, without limits and without hierarchy. Thus, as we see here, the pictorial forms of experimentation, pure stain and gestural brushstrokes, are not limited to a composition but go beyond it, indicating to the spectator that they are forms, ideas or suggestions that go beyond the boundaries of the purely pictorial. This idea of rupture and freedom in pictorial language can be seen not only in the use of forms, but also in the introduction of elements such as collage. Antoni Clavé is one of the most important figures in Spanish contemporary art. Trained at the San Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Clavé initially devoted himself to advertising graphics, illustration and the decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, joining the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. Auction Date: Oct 19, 2021

Estimate: €20,000 - €24,000

Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "Derrière le Bouclier", 1975. Oil and collage on paper glued on táblex. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. With label of the Galerie Patrice Trigano, Paris, on the back. Sizes: 125 x 120 cm; 152 x 147 cm (frame). Antoni Clavé is one of the most important figures of Spanish contemporary art. Trained in Barcelona, during the Civil War he settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. It was the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona which, following an exhibition in 1956, brought national recognition to an artist who by then enjoyed solid prestige both in Europe and the United States. Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ(Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media and collage on cardboard. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 34,5 x 24,5 cm; 62 x 52 cm (frame). Antoni Clavé was a multifaceted artist who synthesised figuration with abstraction, the effects of trompe-l'oeil with the strength of matter, the incorporation of the object with the gestural stroke and the sources of tradition with the concerns of the avant-garde. He went into exile in Paris and became friends with Pablo Picasso, which led him to immerse himself in the world of collage and assemblage and to become a researcher of all kinds of textures and materials, which he used to create his works, as in the case of the one we are auctioning here. That same year, 1939, he exhibited the drawings he had made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. From this period onwards, Clavé began to develop a work marked by a different, less classical style. During this period his figures gradually lost their precision and form, giving way to the lines and a personal range of colours and textures that were to become the main features of his works from that time onwards. He was already enjoying great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognised in Spain, after his exhibition at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona in 1956. In 1952 he made the sets for the film "Hans Christian Andersen", by Charles Vidor, and was nominated for an Oscar. In 1954 he gave up decorating to devote himself to painting. In the 1960s he painted a tribute to El Greco, and his painting at this time reveals the influences of that master, as well as those of the Baroque painters. Of particular relevance is the theme of the knight with his hand on his chest, a reference that would be repeated in Clavé's future works. This period is characterised by the definitive transition to abstraction. In the 1970s Clavé's work continued to evolve, using various techniques such as collage, and inventing new ones such as "papier froissé", the result of a chance use of aerosol on crumpled paper. In 1978, the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, now the Centre Georges Pompidou, devoted a retrospective to him that made him one of the most prestigious artists of his generation. In the 1980s he dedicated a series of works to Picasso under the title "To Don Pablo". His latest works are characterised by the recreation of textures within abstraction, with a profuse use of papier froissé. He was awarded prizes at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennial in 1954 and at the Tokyo International Biennial in 1957. In 1984 the Spanish state recognised his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Clavé's work can be found, among many others, in the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Modern Art Museum in Paris and Tokyo, the British Museum and the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid....

He was awarded prizes at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and at the Tokyo International Biennale in 1957. In 1984 the Spanish state recognised his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Trained at the San Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Clavé first devoted himself to advertising graphics, illustration and decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, joining the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. That same year, 1939, he exhibited the drawings he had made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognised in Spain, with his exhibition at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona in 1956. At the same time he produced illustrations for the work "Gargantua and Pantagruel", which led him to become familiar with medieval iconography. It was in the 1950s that he began his intense work in the world of ballet and theatre, achieving great fame in the world of international stage design. In 1952 he made the sets for the film "Hans Christian Andersen", by Charles Vidor, and was nominated for an Oscar award. In 1954 he abandoned set design to devote himself to painting. Lot 119: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media on paper. Presents label of the Taménaga Gallery (Tokyo). Signed and dated in the right corner.

Auction Date: Sep 20, 2021

Estimate: €8,000 - €10,000

Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). Untitled. Mixed media on paper. Presents label of the Taménaga Gallery (Tokyo). Signed and dated in the right corner. Size: 75 x 54 cm; 93 x 72 cm (frame). Antoni Clavé traveled to Japan on several occasions, the first being in the 60s. The aesthetics of that country, strongly influenced the artist in such a way that, in his artistic compositions, he began to introduce elements such as red stamps, or verticality, in allusion to the stamps used by the artists and owners of the works, and the way of reading these works. In this piece we can observe this tendency, although reinterpreted with the personal language of the author, who configures the elements in a completely expressive way. Antoni Clavé is one of the most relevant figures of Spanish contemporary art. Trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Jordi in Barcelona, Clavé was initially dedicated to advertising graphics, illustration and decorative arts. In 1936 he took an active part in the Civil War, in the Republican ranks, which led him to go into exile in France at the end of the war. That same year, 1939, he exhibits the drawings he made on the battlefields. He settled in Paris, where he met Vuillard, Bonnard and Picasso. From this period on, Clavé began to develop a work marked by a different, less classical plastic art. During this period his figures began to lose precision and form, giving way to the stroke and a personal range of colors and textures that would be the protagonist of his works from then on. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognized in Spain, after his exhibition at the Gaspar Gallery in Barcelona in 1956. In the sixties he made a tribute to El Greco, and his painting of this time reveals the influences received from that master, as well as from the Baroque painters. Of special relevance is the theme of the knight with his hand on his chest, a reference that will be repeated in Clavé's future works. This period is characterized by the definitive step towards abstraction. In the seventies Clavé's work continued to evolve, using diverse techniques such as collage, and inventing new ones such as "papier froissé", the result of a chance use of aerosol on crumpled paper. In 1978, the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, now the Georges Pompidou Center, dedicated a retrospective to him that made him one of the most prestigious artists of his generation. His latest works are characterized by the recreation of textures within abstraction, with a profuse use of "papier froissé". He was awarded prizes at the Hallimark in New York in 1948, at the Venice Biennial in 1954 and at the International Biennial in Tokyo in 1957. In 1984 the Spanish State recognized his artistic value with the exhibition of more than one hundred of his works in the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale. That same year he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "La ninfa constante, 1934. Original work exhibited at the Capitol cinemas. Gouache and collage on paper adhered to canvas. Signed in the central right area. Attached letter from the Clavé Archives confirming the authenticity of the work. Work reproduced in "Cartells per als cinemes de Barcelona, 1933-1935", VV.AA., Sala Gaspar, November 1990, p. 42. Measurements: 233 x 110 cm. Antoni Clavé was, along with Josep Renau, one of the most famous artists in the genre of 20th century Spanish film poster design. At the age of just 22, the Catalan held the title of "the most genuine exponent of Barcelona poster art", and was also considered by the German magazine Gebrauchsgraphik to be "the most popular poster artist in the Catalan capital". Years before the present work was produced, between 1931 and 1933, Antoni Clavé had already received numerous awards for his contribution to the world of cinema. Among other creations, his brilliant posters and oil paintings on plywood were displayed on the façades of the main cinemas in Barcelona, such as the Cine Capitol and the Catalonia. Specifically, Clavé created the poster in question to decorate the walls of the Capitol cinema, following the premiere of the film "The Constant Nymph" in 1934. The film, an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Margaret Kennedy in 1924, tells the story of Tessa (Victoria Hopper), a young Belgian schoolgirl who falls in love with the world-famous composer Lewis Dodd (Brian Aherne). Lot 67: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "Red and black composition", circa 1962. Oil and gouache on lithographed paper mounted on canvas.

Auction Date: Sep 20, 2021

Estimate: €16,000 - €18,000

Description: ANTONI CLAVÉ I SANMARTÍ (Barcelona, 1913 - Saint Tropez, France, 2005). "Red and black composition", circa 1962. Oil and gouache on lithographed paper mounted on canvas. Enclosed is a certificate issued by the Antoni Clavé Archives. The work is registered in the Antoni Clavé Archives, Paris. No : 62TMPMT18. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 57 x 77 cm; 67 x 87 cm (frame). On a dark background, the intensity of the red stands out, reaching a contrast of colours, which brings vivacity to the composition and awakens the spectator's gaze. Through the interplay between the colours red and black, a resource frequently used by Antoni Clavé, the artist deploys a whole set of apparently random elements which come together to form a baroque composition. Trained at the San Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, Clavé initially devoted himself to advertising graphics, illustration and the decorative arts. From this period onwards, Clavé began to develop a work marked by a different, less classical style. He already enjoyed great international prestige at the time when he began to be recognised in Spain, after his exhibition at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona in 1956. In the 1960s he paid homage to El Greco, and his painting at this time reveals the influences of that master, as well as those of the Baroque painters.
