Attributed to Paul Jean Clays (Belgium, 1819-1900). This oil painting on board is signed "P. J. Clays", lower right. The plaque titles this piece "Bateaux de Peche sur l'Escaut" (Fishing Boat on The Scheldt). The work is housed in an ornate gilt frame with an (untested) attached gallery light. The frame has a few age cracks and minor chips. The painting has craquelure. The board measures 14" x 19 1/2", and the frame (with light) measures 25" x 28". In-house shipping is available. Additional masted ships drift across the water in the midground with a distant shoreline and buildings in the background beneath a cloudy, blue sky. Signed "P. J. Clays" lower right. Scott & Fowles Co. and two additional numbering paper labels, en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with foliate accents and central ornaments as well as anthemon flourish corners. Early in his career he substituted a sincere study of nature for the extravagant and artificial conventionality of most of his predecessors. He painted the peaceful life of rivers, the poetry of wide estuaries, the regulated stir of roadsteads and ports. His paintings are now in major collections such as the National Gallery in London or the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. - Joined: 1. Idem - The navigator.
