(born in Naples in 1952) Lotus, 1991, signed and titled on the label on the reverse, wool tapestry, 240 x 230 cm Provenance: Anthony d’Offay Gallery, London European Private Collection (acquired from the above in 2001) Exhibited: London, Anthony d’Offay Gallery, Francesco Clemente: the Painter’s Wardrobe, 30 April-16 June 1999 The lotus flower is a powerful symbol of purity, resilience, rebirth, and spiritual enlightenment. Rooted in mud yet blooming immaculately on the water’s surface, it embodies the transformation of adversity into beauty and inner growth—the ability to rise above difficulty. In Eastern cultures and within psychology, the lotus represents the path toward enlightenment and the integration of body and mind. In this work by Francesco Clemente, the red lotus , symbolizes the heart, passion, and an enduring, unwavering love. Like many of Clemente’s works, this scene is dreamlike, blending spirituality, sexuality, and references to his travels in India. The human body remains central, reflecting the influence of Italian Old Master painting. The subject’s ecstatic posture strongly recalls Baroque precedents, such as Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy (1606) by Caravaggio, Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy (1625) by Artemisia Gentileschi, and the sculptural intensity of Ecstasy of Saint Teresa (1645–1652) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, as well as Bernini’s Ludovica Albertoni (1674). Clemente’s ecstatic figure, however, is male—offering, through the red lotus, a gesture of persistent and passionate love. The subject’s inspiration is clearly from Tantric traditions of India and Tibet Executed in Mexico by the renowned Taller Mexicano de Gobelinos in Guadalajara, this unique tapestry reflects a collaboration with a workshop internationally recognized for preserving a highly refined textile tradition while working with leading contemporary artists. Clemente has often integrated textile elements and artisanal techniques into his practice, particularly through collaborations in other countries, helping to create an ongoing dialogue between diverse traditions and contemporary languages. Spanning more than four decades, Clemente’s career is marked by constant movement and cultural exchange. Dividing his time among New York City, Central and South America, Italy and India, he has developed a deeply nomadic artistic practice. His use of visual references and objects from diverse cultures creates a layered network of meanings, making his work both personal and universal.

Francesco Clemente Italian, b.1952 Cathay 1992 portfolio of seven colored woodcuts (deluxe edition) - accompanied by Ezra Pound's translations from Cathay after Li Po. Published by the Limited Editions Club, New York. 14-1/4 x 34-1/4 x 1 inches (portfolio, overall) Each sheet signed by Clemente and numbered H.C. 2/5 There were also 14 artist and printers proofs. (A more common, smaller scale version, was offered in an edition of 300.) The woodblock prints, cut by Michael Berdan, were printed at Evans Editions. The typography is by Golgonooza Letter Foundry and was printed at Wild Carrot Letterpress. Provenance: James T. Parker Art Trust Collection, Chicago, IL This volume is all the more remarkable for the fact that Pound knew no Chinese. Yet these translations of eighteen medieval poems, mainly by Li Po (A.D. 70I-762), are acknowledged masterpieces. Pound worked from notes by Ernest Fenollosa, a great American scholar of Oriental literature and art. These notes Pound turned to poetry, imbued with the scent and flavor of their Chinese originals. Italian-born artist Francesco Clemente, as well, feels the magnetic pull of the East.
