Lucien Clergue France, (1934-2014) untitled / matador and bull with angels cibachrome photographic print Purchased from John Stevenson Gallery, NY. 2004 Biography from the Archives of askART: Following is The New York Times obituary of the artist. Lucien Clergue, Master and Promoter of Art Photography, Dies at 80 By PAUL VITELLONOV. 26, 2014 Lucien Clergue, one of the most acclaimed photographers in France and a founder of an annual festival in Arles that has become a mainstay of the art photography world, died on Nov. 15 in Nîmes, in the South of France. He was 80. The cause was cancer, his daughter Anne Clergue said. Mr. Clergue (pronounced klairg) enjoyed a national stature in France that was founded partly on his photographic work — modernist black-and-white studies of female nudes, harlequins, dead animals and bullfights — and partly on the strength of all-star patrons who vouched for him as an exemplar of the photographer-artist. His supporters, including Picasso, the poet and playwright Jean Cocteau, the American photographer Edward Steichen and the French literary critic and theorist Roland Barthes, advanced the idea that photography should be considered an art form on a par with painting. Mr. Clergue carried the banner for this concept throughout his career. In 2006, when he became the first photographer elected to the venerable and conservative Académie des Beaux-Arts, it was widely considered a nod of acceptance from the old guard not only for Mr. Clergue but also for his art. His first book, Corps Mémorables ("Memorable Bodies"), a collection of female nudes published in 1957, featured poems by Paul Éluard, a founder of Surrealism, and an introduction by Cocteau. Picasso designed the book's cover and a poster for a gallery exhibition of the photos in the book. When he was 19 Mr. Clergue met Picasso after stopping him on the street in Arles and insisting that he look at his photographs. In 1959 Steichen, as director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, purchased 10 of Mr. Clergue's prints for the museum's permanent collection. Two years later he showed those and 50 more of Mr. Clergue's photos (along with others by Yasuhiro Ishimoto and Bill Brandt) in one of the last exhibitions he organized for MoMA. But Mr. Clergue's most enduring work, by some accounts, began in 1969, when he and two friends, Jean-Maurice Rouquette and Michel Tournier, founded the International Festival of Photography in Arles, the town in the South of France where Vincent van Gogh produced most of his paintings in 1888 and 1889. It was also where Mr. Clergue was born and spent most of his life. Beginning in 1970 with a show featuring work by Edward Weston, whom he considered an inspiration, Mr. Clergue and his partners attracted an ever-widening circle of photographers to the festival during the next 40 years — among them Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Mapplethorpe and Cindy Sherman. The event drew about 100,000 visitors last year. Phillip S. Block, the deputy director of programs at the International Center of Photography in Manhattan, said in an interview that the Arles festival had become "the epicenter of the world photography community." Mr. Clergue was born on Aug. 14, 1934, the only child of parents who divorced when he was 6. Sent to live with relatives in a remote area of France when World War II broke out, he returned during the German occupation to find his neighborhood reduced to rubble and his mother surviving by running a shop that sold food to prostitutes. He became the delivery boy. Mr. Clergue, who published 75 books, was something of a purist, refusing assignments from Vogue and other fashion magazines to concentrate on art photography. He worked in black and white almost exclusively. His early work embraced Provençal characters, including Gypsies and saltimbanques, the region's traveling acrobats and harlequins, who were among Picasso's early subjects as well. His photos of the flamenco guitarist Manitas de Plata, who died this month, helped bring his work to the attention of a global audience. He was mainly known for his nudes, which were widely admired for being both sensual and abstract — conveying their subjects' eroticism while also capturing patterns of light and dark on their flesh that evoked geological formations or hieroglyphics. His other favorite subject was dead or dying animals. The process of decay, he said, was a form of new life. He dedicated an entire book to pictures of bulls dying in the bullring. "Arles is in the delta of the Rhone, which deposits the cadavers of drowned animals on a spit of land 20 meters long," he told The New Yorker in 1961. "For two years I photographed its dead cats, dogs, sheep, chickens, flamingos and other creatures in various stages of metamorphosis. I wanted to explore the 'divers domaines de la mort.' It was like a dream." Besides his daughter Anne, he is survived by his wife, Yolande Clergue, an art curator; and another daughter, Olivia Clergue, a handbag designer whose godfather was Picasso.

Lucien Clergue Photo - ""Acrobate a la Porte, Arles" "

    Est: $1,500 - $2,250

Lucien Clergue (French, 1934-2014). "Acrobate a la Porte, Arles" silver gelatin print, 1955. Edition of 30. Purportedly signed in ink on recto and verso. An enticing silver gelatin print by world-renowned photographer Lucien Clergue depicting a young saltimbanque or acrobat standing in a doorway amongst piles of rubble; the ruins of the Arles after the bombing of France during World War II. This photograph comes from a collection of images of circus people created by the photographer at the young age of 21. In this collection, Clergue stages his characters amongst the wreckage of not only his hometown, but notably the debris of his own house as well. The contrast of character and setting - a circus performer in the ruins of war - express the artist's need to create in a world of silence where time itself seems frozen. Size of photo: 13.125" W x 16.25" H (33.3 cm x 41.3 cm); of frame: 25.25" W x 29.25" H (64.1 cm x 74.3 cm) About the artist: "Clergue was an internationally recognized art photographer who established his career by photographing circus members, musicians, and harlequins in Southern France. Alongside other creatives who advocated for the recognition of photography as a legitimate art form - including Roland Barthes, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, and Edward Steichen - Clergue's work became a blueprint for art photography. His intention to fashion himself as an artist was clear from the outset, as he rejected commercial work in favor of projects that captured specific ideas and forms. Clergue photographed a range of subjects, including female nudes, animals, street scenes, and intimate portraits of Modern artists and friends like Cocteau and Picasso?almost always in black and white. Although Clergue did not receive a formal postsecondary education, he learned photography in his early teenage years and began working with Picasso at nineteen. Clergue's work has been exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Marmottan Museum, Paris; Art Institute of Chicago; Jackson Fine Art, Atlanta; and Kunstgewerbemuseum, Zurich. Clergue's work is primarily held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Fogg Museum, Harvard University. The artist worked with writer Michel Tournier and historian Jean-Maurice Rouqette to found the Rencontres d'Arles, an internationally-known photography festival in his hometown of Arles. In 2006, Clergue became the first photographer to be elected to the French Academy of the Arts in Paris." Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Lucien Clergue (French, 1934-2014). "Acrobate a la Porte, Arles" silver gelatin print, 1955. Edition of 30. Hand-signed at lower right beneath image. Size of image: 10.5" W x 14" H (26.7 cm x 35.6 cm); of frame: 18.6" W x 22.6" H (47.2 cm x 57.4 cm) About the artist: "Clergue was an internationally recognized art photographer who established his career by photographing circus members, musicians, and harlequins in Southern France. Clergue photographed a range of subjects, including female nudes, animals, street scenes, and intimate portraits of Modern artists and friends like Cocteau and Picasso—almost always in black and white. In 2006, Clergue became the first photographer to be elected to the French Academy of the Arts in Paris."
