Esistono due altre versioni (praticamente di dimensioni uguali alla versione qui presentata) giudicate di bottega: una conservata al Louvre (31,5 x 17 cm), un'altra appartenente alle collezioni inglesi del National Trust (32,4 x 17,8 cm) e conservata presso l'Anglesey Abbey di Cambridgeshire. François fu figlio di Jean Clouet, pittore ufficiale alla corte di Francia, del quale prese il posto al sopraggiungere della morte. Oltre che gli insegnamenti del padre potrebbe essere stato allievo di Hans Holbein il Giovane. Grazie ai suoi disegni gli vengono attribuiti numerosi ritratti oggi conservati a Versailles, Louvre, Museo Condé Chantilly, Uffizi e Pitti. Ebbe alcuni collaboratori, i quali furono in grado di imitare perfettamente il suo ductus pittorico, tanto da inficiare la distinzione delle opere. There are two other versions (practically the same size as the version presented here) judged to be the work of a workshop: one is kept in the Louvre (31,5 x 17 cm), another belongs to the English collections of the National Trust (32,4 x 17,8 cm) and is kept at Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire.

Ritratto di nobildonna;Öl auf Holz, 31 x 24 cm, gerahmt In Gewand, Schmuck und Frisur der Dame, nicht aber in ihrer Physiognomie, stimmt das Porträt weitestgehend überein mit einem Bildnis der Marguerite de Valois-Angoulême, duchesse de Berry (1523-1574), das 2011 bei Christie’s als Arbeit der Werkstatt des französischen Hofmalers François Clouet (1510/30-1572) versteigert wurde. Der Typus des Porträts (Brustbild mit angeschnittenen Armen, Dreiviertelprofil, dunkler Hintergrund) findet seine Entsprechung auch noch in zahlreichen weiteren Bildnissen von Clouet und seiner Werkstatt. Hinsichtlich der malerischen Qualität kommt das Porträt jedoch nicht an die Originale Clouets und wohl auch nicht an Werkstattarbeiten wie das Bildnis der Marguerite de Valois-Angoulême heran. Es handelt sich folglich wohl eher um eine (spätere?) Kopie nach einem (verlorenen?) Original von Clouet oder seiner Werkstatt oder um die Arbeit eines Clouet-Nachahmers ohne exakte Vorlage. Attributed to FRANCOIS CLOUET (France, ca. 1515-1572). "Portrait of Magdaleine de l'Auberpine, dame de Villeroy, ca 1562. Oil on panel. Measurements: 34.5 x 25 cm; 64 x 54.5 cm (frame). The court painter François Clouet was the favorite portraitist of the most exclusive aristocratic circles of his time. The lady represented in this painting could be identified from a drawing attributed to Jacques-Joseph Lécurieux (conserved in the National Library of France), a nineteenth-century author of pencil copies of Clouet's paintings. The iconography and characterization of the lady places her execution between 1560-1565 due to its similarities with portraits by Clouet such as that of Queen Jeanne d'Albret from 1563 and Marie de Gaignon from the same year. Experts believe that it must have been a wedding portrait. She married, at the age of 16, Nicolas de Neufville (in 1562). Her husband would assume the position of secretary of state, inheriting it from Madeleine's father, Claude de l'Aubespine. Due to her own merits as a poet, she would also be Catherine de' Medici's lady-in-waiting. An artistic and intellectual profession was rare for Renaissance women. We are faced with a portrait of extraordinary quality. A masterful use of glazes manages to translate the transparency of the gauze, the play of pleats, the shine of the pearls and the smoothness of the carnations. The velvet bodice is decorated with sumptuous brocades. Likewise, with an accurate drawing he delves into the psychology of the lady. François Clouet was a French painter of Flemish origin. He succeeded his father, Jean Clouet, as official court painter of Francis I. After the monarch's death he continued to work for the royal house of Valois, for which he mainly painted and drew portraits; His drawings were highly appreciated by Catherine de Medici, who collected these types of images in albums. From this stage are the representations of Henry II, Catherine de Medici and Francis II, all of them preserved in Paris, in the Cabinet des Estampes of the Bibliothèque Nationale. His drawings achieved such fame that Pierre de Ronsard and other poets dedicated verses to him praising his abilities. The formality of the court portrait predominates in his paintings, with examples such as Henry II (Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi) and Charles IX (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum), which have been compared with the works of great portraitists such as Antonio Moro and Jacob Seisnegger. Her best-known composition, Lady in the Bath, is preserved in the National Gallery in Washington.

Suivant ses traces, François exécute à son tour de précieux petits portraits sur vélin, illustrant les traits des modèles illustres qu'il avait déjà représentés sur le papier ou bien peints sur panneaux. (Tours, 1515 - Parigi, 1572) Ritratto di dama con veste dalle maniche rosse Olio su tavola, cm 29X22 François Clouet si formò nella bottega paterna e deve la sua fama per lo straordinario talento di ritrattista. Le sue opere coniugano la minuziosità del dettaglio secondo il gusto fiammingo, con la preziosità dell'esecuzione francese. Non sorprende quindi che divenne pittore alle corti di Francesco I, Enrico II, Francesco II e Carlo IX. Importantissimo per la sua evoluzione artistica fu il viaggio in Italia avvenuto verso il 1549-1550, durante il quale contemplò e assimilò il raffinato manierismo in auge a Firenze.

16 Century Oil on Panel Painting Attributed to Francois Clouet Francois Clouet (French 1510 - 1572) Oil on panel in a period frame. Probably Portrate of Princesa Margarita Gonzaga Size: 10 x 7 in. Frame: 17 1/2 x 14 1/2 in. Artist Description: Franois Clouet was a French Renaissance miniaturist and painter, particularly known for his detailed portraits of the French ruling family. He held the office of groom of the chamber and painter in ordinary to the king. As the praises of Franois Clouet were sung by the writers of the day, his name was carefully preserved from reign to reign, and there is an ancient and unbroken tradition in the attribution of many of his pictures. There are not, however, any original attestations of his works, nor are any documents known which would guarantee the ascriptions usually accepted. To him are attributed the portraits of Francis I at the Uffizi and at the Louvre, and various drawings relating to them. He probably also painted the portrait of Catherine de' Medici at Versailles and other works, and in all probability a large number of the drawings ascribed to him were from his hand. One of his most remarkable portraits is that of Mary, Queen of Scots, a drawing in chalks in the Bibliothque Nationale, and of similar character are the two portraits of Charles IX and the one at Chantilly of Marguerite of France. Perhaps his masterpiece is the portrait of Elizabeth of Austria in the Louvre. Several miniatures are believed to be his work, one very remarkable portrait being the half-length figure of Henry II in the collection of J. Pierpont Morgan. Another of his portraits is that of Franois, duc d'Alenon in the Jones collection at South Kensington, and certain representations of members of the royal family which were in the Hamilton Palace collection and the Magniac sale are usually ascribed to him. His work is remarkable for the elaborate finish of all the details, the extreme accuracy of the drawing, and the exquisite completeness of the whole portrait. He must have been a man of high intelligence, and of great penetration, intensely interested in his work, and with considerable ability to represent the character of his sitter in his portraits. His coloring is perhaps not specially remarkable, nor from the point of style can his pictures be considered especially beautiful, but in perfection of drawing he has hardly any equal.
