Federico del Campo Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1837 - d. 1923

Federico del Campo (1837-1923) was a Peruvian painter who was active in Venice where he was one of the leading vedute painters of the 19th century.

Del Campo was born in Lima and left his native Peru at a young age. Nothing is known with certainty about his early studies in Peru. He studied at Madrid's Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando) in Madrid from around 1865. Here he established a friendship with Lorenzo Valles, a history painter. Del Campo subsequently travelled to Italy and painted in Naples, Capri, Rome, Assisi and Venice. During a visit to France he studied new artistic developments in Paris. From 1880, he exhibited works at the annual Salon van de Société des Artistes Français. In 1880 he established himself in Venice.

Here there already was a seizable community of émigré artists, such as Antonietta Brandeis, and the Spanish painters Martín Rico y Ortega, Mariano Fortuny and Rafael Senet. He became good friends with Martín Rico. The two artists worked sometimes together painting the Venetian scenes that were popular with the increasing number of visitors to that city. They responded thus to the large international market for their city views of Venice. Demand for del Campo's views was so strong, that he painted several views multiple times.

Particularly English tourists were taken by del Campo’s vedute of Venice. This was probably the reason why he moved to London in 1893 where he worked for a clientele of aristocrats and successful merchants. He was represented by art dealer Arthur Tooth who was able to organize a special exhibition of his work in Chicago during the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. This success likely ensured del Campo’s comfortable life style. Little is known about his last two decades but it is likely that he died in London in 1923.

Work: Del Campo specialized in landscapes of Venice, the Grand Canal, the Doge's Palace and the St. Mark’s Basilica. His paintings distinguish themselves through their crystalline atmosphere and depict Venice's buildings set against a dazzling, light blue sea and sky. He also used a bright palette and short, fine, brushstrokes and delicate glazes, that give the surface of his paintings a shimmering and luminous quality.

    • FEDERICO DEL CAMPO,  PERUVIAN 1837-1927-  THE DOGE'S PALACE AND THE GRAND CANAL, VENICE;  OIL ON C
      Mar. 29, 2023

FEDERICO DEL CAMPO,  PERUVIAN 1837-1927-  THE DOGE'S PALACE AND THE GRAND CANAL, VENICE;  OIL ON C

      Est: £55,000 - £65,000

Federico del Campo,  Peruvian 1837-1927-  The Doge's Palace and the Grand Canal, Venice;  oil on canvas, signed, inscribed and dated 'F. del Campo. / Venezia 1899' (lower right), 36 x 55.8 cm.  Provenance:  with MacConnal-Mason, London.  Private collection, UK (acquired from the above by the present owner).  Note:  This sweeping view epitomizes del Campo's approach to 'vedutismo', a genre pioneered in the 18th century by Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) and Canaletto (1697-1768), which gained increasing popularity in the 19th century. Painted from the promenade overlooking the lagoon and encompassing the Doge's Palace, the entrance to St Mark's Square, and the Church of Santa Maria della Salute, the panorama is striking in its crystalline atmosphere, in which the buildings are set against dazzling, light blue sea and sky. Del Campo achieved this effect with great technical precision through the application of short, fine, brushstrokes and delicate glazes, which give the surface of his paintings a shimmering and luminous quality. In addition to the observed specificity of architecture, del Campo animates the scene with figures, showing a merchant unloading fruits, and flowers from a large gondola. The results boast an abundance of detail, and were rightly prized by European and American travellers on their European Grand Tours. The elegance of the subject and its technique are telling of their times, reflective of sophisticated Belle Époque taste during the 1880s and 1890s, and of the increased demand for souvenir views by a newly mobile bourgeoisie. Indeed, so much were del Campo's views in demand that he painted the present view several times, it becoming his signature composition. The young del Campo was lured to Italy not only by its picturesqueness but by the hope of launching a successful and lucrative career. In moving to Venice in the late 1880s, he joined an already large community of emigré artists, among them Antoinetta Brandeis (1848-1926) and the Spanish colony of painters who included Rafael Senet (1856-1926), Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949), and Martin Rico y Ortega (1833-1908), all of whom found a ready international market for their views of the city. Many, del Campo included, made such big names for themselves through this genre that they painted nothing but Italian views. An almost identical composition by del Campo, also dated 1899 and of similar dimensions, sold at Sotheby's, New York, 1 February 2019, lot 437 ($125,000).

Provenance: Swiss private collection. --------------- FEDERICO DEL CAMPO (Lima 1837–1923 London) After the concert. 1877. Öl auf Holz. Unten rechts signiert, bezeichnet und datiert: CAMPO. ASSISI. 1877. 22,2 × 37,4 cm. Provenienz: Schweizer Privatbesitz.

Federico del Campo (Peruvian, 1837-1923) View of the Molo, looking towards Santa Maria della Salute Oil on canvas 14 x 23 inches (35.6 x 58.4 cm) Signed lower right: F. del Campo PROVENANCE: Joseph Sartor Galleries, Dallas; Bernard L. Gold, New York and Dallas, acquired from the above, circa 1945; Thence by descent to the present owner. Italy during the late 19th century was abuzz with foreign visitors; tourists and expatriates, alike. Capitalizing on this fervor, artists such as Federico del Campo, Martin Rico y Ortega, Antoinetta Brandeis as well as François Brunery, all artists represented in this sale, captured everyday scenes of the city for well-heeled travelers as souvenirs of their Grand Tour. Federico del Campo was often considered to be the most successful of this group. Known primarily for his approach to vedutismo, del Campo was inspired by Guardi and Canaletto in his panoramic representations of Venice. Born in South America and formally educated in Spain, del Campo studied in Madrid with Lorenzo Valles. Much of the artist's personal life is not well documented, but his talent and attention to detail are cemented in the art historical canon. His technical rendering of hard, architectural elements compared to the soft, light brush strokes of a white cloud against a bright blue sky make his romantic scenes of Venice come alive. In this particular vista, the viewer floats on a gondola beneath just such a sky, passing the Piazzetta on the right and proceeding towards the Punta della Dogana and the iconic Santa Maria della Salute before entering the majestic Grand Canal. Del Campo offers up the delights to be seen on a typical day: a flower seller unloading baskets full of bright blooms and elegant ladies promenading, along with the ever-present gondoliers waiting patiently for passengers. FEDERICO DEL CAMPO (peruvian 1837–1927) VENETIAN CANALS; A PAIR Both signed, located and dated 'F. del Campo/Venezia/1899' (one bottom right, the other bottom left), pair oils on canvas Each: 13 7/8 x 9 1/4 in. (35.2 x 23.5cm) (2) provenance: Private Collection, United Kingdom. NOTE: Born in Lima, Peru, Federico del Campo studied at the Real Academia de Bella Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, establishing a friendship with fellow painter Lorenzo Valles (1830-1910). As with his contemporaries Franz Unterberger (1838-1902), Martin Rico y Ortega (1833-1908) and Antonietta Brandeis (1848-1926), del Campo is best known for his luminous views of Venice, in which architecturally accurate buildings, shimmering canals and gondolas are rendered with great detail, using short, precise brushstrokes and delicate glazes. In the present paintings, the viewer is invited into the picture plane, his or her eye following the winding canals rendered with single vanishing point perspective, all the while taking note of the blue skies, gondoliers and figures walking along the promenades. A painter of vedute, del Campo masterfully painted, both in vertical and horizontal formats, such locations as the Palazzo Ducale, Santa Maria della Salute, the Doge's Palace, the Ca d'Oro, the Grand Canal and Saint Mark's Square.
