    Dec. 11, 2024

Enrico Coleman (Roma 1846-1911) - Self-portrait at Ponte Molle

    Est: €1,000 - €1,500

watercolor on cardboard 30.3 x 29.3 cm signed, located and dated lower right: HE Coleman / Ponte Molle 1873 LITERATURE R. Mammuccari, La Campagna romana, Roma 1991, pp. 60-61, n. 17 (ill.) This watercolor depicts Enrico Coleman himself, one of the founders of the XXV group of the Roman Campagna, intent on painting a farmhouse near Ponte Milvio. The historic Roman bridge, where the famous battle between Constantine and Maxentius took place, presumably owes its name to the censor Mulvius, but over the centuries the name was corrupted in various ways, from Milvius to Molbius and, later, Molle . The artist here chooses to represent a more hidden corner of a famous place, preferring an unusual and less obvious point of view.

Enrico Coleman, born June 21, 1846 in Rome, was a British-born Italian painter. His father, Charles Coleman, was an English landscape painter, while his mother, Fortunata Segadori, was a model born in Subiaco. Enrico inherited an interest in landscape painting from his father and became a frequent visitor to the countryside around Rome, the favorite subject of his paintings. Initially influenced by Mariano Fortuny-style painting, Coleman changed direction thanks to the advice of Nino Costa, an elderly Roman landscape painter. He enthusiastically returned to naturalistic subjects, portraying the Roman Campagna with a prevalence of horizontal lines and devoting particular attention to scenes of running animals, especially horses. Coleman also distinguished himself by his passion for orchids, becoming an excellent cultivator of this flower. He made detailed watercolors of wild orchids, creating a unique album. He was also an active member of the Italian Alpine Club, winning a gold medal at the Bologna Alpine Exposition in 1888. The artist had a studio in Rome, initially on Via Zucchelli and later on Via Margutta shared with his brother Francesco. Coleman participated in numerous Italian exhibitions and received recognition, including being named an honorary member of the Royal Society of Belgian Watercolorists in 1878 and elected an academician of merit by the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia in 1902. Coleman retained his British nationality throughout his life, although he never visited his family's homeland. He died in Rome on February 4, 1911, and was buried in the Non-Catholic Testaccio Cemetery. After his death, several retrospective exhibitions of his works were organized in Rome, but much of his painting output is scattered in private collections without systematic cataloguing. Some of his works are preserved in museums such as the Museum of Liverpool and the Accademia di S. Luca in Rome.
