After the first business week buyer is responsible for arranging shipping within 30 days post-auction. Artist Bio: William Stephen Coleman (1829–1904) was an English painter and book illustrator. Born at Horsham, Sussex, he was one of the 12 children of the surgeon William Thomas Coleman and his wife Henrietta Dendy; the artist Helen Cordelia Coleman (1847–1884) was the fifth daughter of the family.Coleman was unsuccessful in a career as surgeon, and turned to natural history illustration. He collaborated with Harrison Weir, Joseph Wolf and others; in the preparation of the wood-blocks he was assisted by his sister Rebecca. He painted in watercolour, mainly landscapes with figures, in a style with something in common with Birket Foster, and semi-classical figure subjects, related to those by Albert Joseph Moore.His classically-influenced works placed him in the "toga and terrace" or "marble school" with George Bulleid, W. Anstey Dollond, Norman Prescott-Davies and Oliver Rhys.Coleman also executed etchings, occasionally worked in pastel, and painted in oil. He was a member of the original committee of management of the Dudley Gallery, contributing to the first exhibition in 1865. He continued to exhibit till 1879, and remained on the committee till 1881.In 1869 Coleman began to experiment in pottery decoration; the Mintons Art Pottery Studio in Kensington Gore was established under his direction in 1871, and he executed figure designs for Mintons ceramic ware. He died after a long illness at 11 Hamilton Gardens, St. John's Wood, on 22 March 1904. His widow survived him.In 1859 Coleman published Our Woodlands. English school, second half of the nineteenth century. Attributed to WILLIAM STEPHEN COLEMAN (England, 1829- 1904). "Boy with still life of prawns". Oil on canvas. The label affixed to the back identifies the establishment where the artist purchased the canvases (Alfred Mucklow). The gilt frame has non-active xylophages. Attached is an export authorization valid until 06/28/2025. Measurements: 76 x 63 cm; 103 x 89 cm (frame). Painting of costumbrista theme and naturalistic treatment. A solitary child, seated by the sea, looks at us with his big caramel-colored eyes. His cheeks reveal a life in the open, an idea that is reinforced by the tears in his pants and the worn appearance of his attire. Next to him, a plate of freshly caught shrimp and a jar with its mouth uncorked form a frugal still life. Behind the figure, we can guess the sea. A blanket of gray clouds advance swiftly, announcing rain. The painting coincides in subject matter and treatment with some oil paintings by William Stephen Coleman. Coleman, although trained as a surgeon, turned to painting and natural history illustration. He collaborated with Harrison Weir and Joseph Wolf. He painted in watercolor, mainly landscapes with figures, in a style with something in common with Birket Foster, and semi-classical subjects, related to those of Albert Joseph Moore. Coleman also produced etchings, occasionally worked in pastel and painted in oil. He painted in watercolour, mainly landscapes with figures, in a style with something in common with Birket Foster, and semi-classical subjects, related to those of Albert Joseph Moore. William Stephen Coleman Coleman also produced etchings, occasionally worked in pastel and painted in oil. In 1869 Coleman began experimenting with pottery decoration; the Mintons Art Pottery Studio at Kensington Gore was established under his direction in 1871, and he executed figure designs for Mintons pottery.

Born in Sussex in 1829 the son of surgeon William Thomas Coleman and his wife Henrietta Dendy, his elder sister was artist Helen Cordelia Coleman (1847-1884) Coleman was unsuccessful in a career as a surgeon and turned to natural history illustration. He painted mainly landscapes with figures, in a style with something in common with watercolourist Miles Birket Foster , and concentrated on semi-classical figure subjects. His classically-influenced works placed him in the toga and terrace or marble school with artists George Bulleid , W. Anstey Dollond , Norman Prescott-Davies and Oliver Rhys . Coleman was a versatile artist, executing etchings, occasionally working in pastel, but primarily painting exquisitely in oil. He was a member of the original committee of management of the Dudley Gallery in London, contributing to the first exhibition in 1865. He continued to exhibit till 1879, and remained on the committee till 1881. In 1869 Coleman began to experiment in pottery and porcelain decoration. The Mintons Art Pottery Studio in Kensington Gore was established under his direction in 1871, and he executed figure designs for Mintons ceramic ware. He died after a long illness at 11 Hamilton Gardens, St. John's Wood , on 22 March 1904.
