Le Déjeuner sur L'Herbe, I (After Manet) is one Colescott's studies for his painting, Sunday Afternoon with Joaquin Murrieta, 1979. This study is more aligned with the original masterpiece from Manet than his 1979 painting that features a portrait of quasi-fictional nineteenth century bandido, Joaquin Murrieta. A similar study of The Luncheon by Colescott is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Provenance: private collection, New Orleans. This watercolor by Robert Colescott is a scarce early work on paper from his Portland period. After completing an MA at the University of California at Berkley in 1952, Colescott accepted a teaching position at Portland State University, where he was on staff from 1957 to 1966. While living in Portland, he was represented by Fountain Gallery, where his work was included in the gallery's inaugural exhibition and he was given his first solo show in 1963.

Robert Colescott was known for his satirical, politicized paintings and his expressive style, often conveying comical, exuberant, or bitter reflections on being African American. From his beginnings as an abstract artist, Colescott eventually adopted a figurative style, which he used to explore race relations, often in domestic and sexual contexts. Throughout his long and prolific career, his works adhered to a distinctly political, multicultural agenda; his subject matter often distorted or destabilized the visual signifiers of gender and race.
