Josephine Baker and her show "La Revue Nègre" took Paris by storm in 1925. The performance was accompanied by an Art Deco poster designed by Paul Colin, which later became the basis for the present series "Le tumulte noir". With his work, Colin captured the spirit and movement of the new, wild Charleston dance, which, together with jazz, had just been imported from the United States. The portfolio was printed in 500 copies, with only a few complete copies known. It contains 42 double-sided prints with colourings by Jean Saudé, a foreword by Rip, a signed calligram, and a signed facsimile of the humorous text by Joséphine Baker. Paul Colin 1892-1985 Tabarin. 1928. Condition A-: slight darkening and minor creases at edges. Paper. The Bal Tabarin, a popular night club in Montmartre, was opened in 1904 by Auguste Bosc, a composer of some renown in Paris during the "gay nineties." The club made its reputation with the Belle Époque favorite, the cancan, continuing to perform it long after the First World War, when the craze had all but died elsewhere. In the mid-20s two retired dancers infused the club with new life by introducing the Charleston. The passage of time and the changing trends are all illustrated in a spectacular manner here, with three different women dancing three separate dances all melded into one image. One element is clear among all the different characters in this poster - each is exposing enough skin to tantalize the viewer to attend an event there. This is one of the most sophisticated compositions Colin designed, infused with incredible movements of the various arms and legs, and containing different layers, combining three images into one. Using only three colors, Colin pays a flamboyant tribute to the art of dancing and has created a classic image reflecting the energy of Paris during the Jazz Age. This is the smaller format. Written by Russians Vladimir Kirchon and Andrei Ouspenski, it was adapted into French and premiered at the Theatre de l'Avenue in Paris on November 22, 1929. Rust consisted of 10 short sketches or vignettes each dramatizing an aspect of Communist existence in Moscow, according to the Brisbane Courier of Jan. 25, 1930. The leading character, Constantine Tereklne, is an utter scoundrel, and each successive scene adds to the picture of the misery, poverty, depravity, and hopelessness which constitutes life in the Russia of to-day. Born into poverty in St. Louis, Missouri, she began her career in vaudeville and Broadway chorus lines before her life changed decisively in 1925, when she joined La Revue NÃ¨gre, a troupe assembled by Caroline Dudley Reagan to introduce African American music and dance to Paris. Following rehearsals in New York and aboard the SS Berengaria, the production premiered on 2 October 1925 at the ThÃ©Ã¢tre des Champs-ÃlysÃ©es. The revue proved a defining cultural phenomenon. While some critics celebrated it as a vital infusion of energy into a perceived stagnating French culture, others regarded it as a challenge to established artistic norms. At its centre was Bakerâs danse sauvage with her partner Joe Alex, an uninhibited and highly theatrical duet that captivated audiences through its blend of eroticism and what was then framed as âprimitivismâ. The visual identity of this phenomenon was shaped by the young French artist Paul Colin. Commissioned to design the poster, Colin drew directly from his observations of Baker in rehearsal, initiating a lifelong creative partnership. The resulting composition, executed in a bold palette of red, black and white, stands as a landmark of Art Deco graphic design. Using Cubist-inflected distortion, Colin conveyed Bakerâs rhythmic vitality, presenting her with slicked-back hair and arms set akimbo at the apex of a human pyramid. Yet the poster also reflects the racial stereotypes embedded within 1920s Parisian society. Bakerâs depiction in minimal attire and an exuberant, exaggerated pose aligns with a broader primitivist fascination that frequently exoticised and objectified Black performers. In contrast, the two male figures are rendered through overt caricature, with exaggerated features derived from minstrel imagery that reinforce demeaning visual tropes, positioning Black men as comic or subordinate figures. This stark visual duality underscores the tension between Bakerâs agency in shaping her public persona and the racialised frameworks through which she was received, highlighting the complexities of her status as both a modern icon and a subject of projection. The collaboration proved transformative for both figures: Baker became the most celebrated performer in France, while Colin emerged as one of the leading poster artists of his generation. Beyond the stage, Bakerâs legacy extended into political and humanitarian spheres. She served with distinction in the French Resistance during the Second World War and became an outspoken advocate for civil rights in the United States. In 2021, she was inducted into the PanthÃ©on in Paris, becoming the first Black woman to receive this honour, an enduring recognition of a life that navigated, and ultimately transcended, the constraints of race, performance and modern identity.

Paul Colin was one of the most important graphic designers of theater and music hall posters during the French Art Deco period. His poster for the Revue Nègre, a one-night event in 1925, made Josephine Baker, jazz and himself the craze of all Paris. Colin went on to design hundreds of posters, stage sets, costumes and cabaret decorations, to the point where his work is inextricably linked to the creativity and exuberance that made the Roaring Twenties unique. He was very fond of the piano as a decorative element and it began appearing in stylized form in some of his earliest posters. In assessing Colin's piano posters, his first, and by far the best, was for Wiener et Doucet in 1925 - a soft, geometrically-balanced poster. In 1927 he took the piano to further Cubist abstraction in an exquisite poster for Lisa Duncan. In 1929 he used this comfortable Cubist approach again for André Renaud, a virtuoso who could play two pianos at the same time. Paul Colin 1892-1985 La Revue Nègre au Music Hall des Champs - Élysées. 1925. Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears at edges, one into lower right text; small replaced losses, repaired tears and creases in image; reds slightly attenuated. If any poster were to be credited with altering the direction of early 20th century popular culture, this simple, yet arresting image could be it. This was not Paul Colin's first poster, but one of his earliest. By the mid-1920s, the artist had designed a few movie posters and was collaborating with the men behind the Music Hall des Champs Élysées. It was most likely the first graphic image designed for Josephine Baker, who had been brought to Paris as a rising star in the Black American vaudeville scene. That said, this poster was such a success that it launched both of their meteoric careers. By modern standards, this depiction is stereotypical and offensive, but in its time this image was exotic, alluring and electric, and fed right into the cultural Black craze sweeping Paris in the 1920s. "The city's penchant for African art, African Americans, and jazz was in full swing. Parisians layered their life-to-life interactions with African Americans on top of existing colonial perceptions of blacks and black imagery." The Revue Nègre, with its tap-dancing, jazz, and so-called 'authentic' African dance, exemplified this merging of Africa and African Americans in the French imagination. When Josephine Baker appeared on the stage of the Theatre des Champs-Élysées to perform la danse sauvage wearing no more than a skimpy feather skirt, the audience, whether they liked the dance or not, was already primed with expectations and beliefs ingrained over the centuries." If the image doesn't resemble Josephine Baker as much as some of Colin's later works (specifically the Bal Nègre, 1927, in which she is pictured dancing in a grass skirt), it is most likely because Colin may not have seen the group perform before he designed the poster (they arrived in France only 10 days prior to their first performance) and he relied on pre-existing illustrations of the Black entertainment community for his representation. Specifically, there is an undeniable visual connection between the female figure on this poster and a drawing Miguel Covarrubias did for an article in Vanity Fair in 1924. Covarrubias himself also came to Paris with the troupe to help design the sets for the show. The poster brought the ‘exotic' looks of the new performers to the hoardings of the French capital, and in conjunction with the incredible reviews that came out in regards to the show, helped propel both Josephine Baker and Paul Colin to super-stardom. Cette affiche servait à mettre en valeur les thermes, les activités sportives et de détente, incitant les visiteurs à profiter de la saison estivale et thermale de mai à octobre à Vichy, alors en pleine relance après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. « VICHY » Reine des villes d’eau, station thermale autrefois appelée Vichy-les-bains, est située dans le sud-est du département de l'Allier, en région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Elle est connue dès l'Antiquité pour ses sources thermales et connaît un grand essor au xixe siècle, notamment avec la production de la célèbre pastille de Vichy. This collection serves as an illustrated guide to Parisian cocktails, complete with recipes for accompanying dishes. A definitive reference work on the Parisian cocktails of the era, it perfectly captures the cocktail culture of the time as well as its distinctive Art Deco aesthetic. Rip, pseudonym of Georges Gabriel Thenon French songwriter, illustrator, librettist and revue creator, best known as a master of the revue genre. Paul Hubert Colin Painter, draughtsman, costume designer, set designer and one of the most innovative and influential French poster artists and lithographers of the early 20th century. He made his name in 1925 with his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped launch Josephine Baker’s career and propelled him to the forefront of the modern school of lithographic poster art. American Negro art, music and dress, as perceived by the Parisians, was tremendously popular. On Rue Blouret a dance hall had opened its doors and the Parisian smart set gathered there each evening to dance with themselves and with the blacks... And as if one night was meant to crown or synthesize all this, the Bal Negre was held on February 11, 1927... Colin recalls this event fifty years later: 'I organized the Bal Negre and I put up the money myself for this evening of dance at the Theatre de Champs-Elysees. We had a full house. All the society people were there. There must have been at least 3,000 people.' Zenith Watch Company traces its history to 1843, making it one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers. Zenith is best known for the high beat El Primero movement - revolutionary when first created, and still powering some of the finest watches ever produced. Zenith has received over 1500 first prizes from observatories for the precision of its timepieces. The poster was created in the 1950's by the noted French artist, Paul Colin (1892-1985). Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped to launch the career of Josephine Baker (who became his mistress), Paul Colin worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art déco at the outset, (his Le Tumulte noir is a masterpiece of the genre), his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. A student of Eugène Vallin and of Victor Prouvé, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. He is the author of over 1400 posters and many theatrical sets and costume designs.
