Paul (1892) Colin Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Caricaturist, b. 1892 - d. 1985

Paul Colin (27 June 1892 in Nancy, France – 18 June 1985 in Nogent-sur-Marne) was one of France’s greatest poster artists.

Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped to launch the career of Josephine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes.

Very Art déco at the outset, (his Le Tumulte noir is a masterpiece of the genre), his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. A student of Eugène Vallin and of Victor Prouvé, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. He is the author of more thab 1,400 posters and many theatrical set and costume designs. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics.[1]

He was the master of painter Philippe Derome and poster artists duo Lefor-Openo

An original vintage poster of singer and Broadway star Adelaide Hall by Paul Colin advertising Blackbirds at the Moulin Rouge in 1929, sold on 2 October 2003 at Swann Auction Galleries in New York for $167,500.[2] The sale signalled a record high for an original Paul Colin poster.

PAUL COLIN (1892-1985) WEEK END CIGARETTES. 1933. 58x36¾ inches, 147¼x93¼ cm. Bedos et Cie, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases, abrasions and minor overpainting at edges and in image; creases and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; repaired pin holes in corners; small replaced losses in upper image. Framed. This is one of the most inventive of Paul Colin's commercial posters. Against a grass-green background, suggestive of the leisure implied by the product's name, Colin shows an almost bird's-eye view of three people relaxing and enjoying their cigarettes. The perspective, the colors and the use of the diagonal provide a very striking image. Colin may have been inspired by the similarity the motion of opening a hinged pack of cigarettes has with unfolding a deck chair. Crouse p. 220, Colin 173.

PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) ANDRÉ RENAUD. 1929. 60x45¾ inches, 152½x116¼ cm. H. Chachoin, Paris. Condition B: toned; creases, printer's creases and abrasions in margins and image; scratches in lower image; horizontal fold. Paper. Framed. Paul Colin was one of the most important graphic designers of theater and music hall posters during the French Art Deco period. His poster for the Revue Nègre, a one-night event in 1925, made Josephine Baker, jazz and himself the craze of all Paris. Colin went on to design hundreds of posters, stage sets, costumes and cabaret decorations, to the point where his work is inextricably linked to the creativity and exuberance that made the Roaring Twenties unique. He was very fond of the piano as a decorative element and it began appearing in stylized form in some of his earliest posters. In assessing Colin's piano posters, his first, and by far the best, was for Wiener et Doucet in 1925 - a soft, geometrically-balanced poster. In 1927 he took the piano to further Cubist abstraction in an exquisite poster for Lisa Duncan. In 1929 he used this comfortable Cubist approach again for André Renaud, a virtuoso who could play two pianos at the same time. Crouse p. 158, Reina Sofia p. 34, Colin no. 74, The Poster p. 137, Art Deco Graphics p. 99.

PAUL COLIN (1892-1986) LE BAL FLEURI. 1927. 61¼x46 inches, 155½x116¾ cm. H. Chachoin, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and overpainting in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. During the Roaring Twenties, elegant balls on behalf of charities were frequently organized in Paris to entertain the rich and famous, such as the Bal de la Fourrure, Bal des Bijoux, Bal des Petits Lits Blancs, Bal des Valses and numerous others. Paul Colin, who was at the height of his popularity having recently designed the poster for the Bal Negre (held a few months previously in February at the same fashionable venue, the Theatre des Champs Elysées), was commissioned to design posters for quite a few of these events. Uninspired by the flowers for which this ball was named, Colin produced a dynamic, Art Deco image in which elegant couples are dancing. The diagonals formed by their legs and the flash of magenta dresses lend a fluid, eye-catching appeal to the crowded dance floor. Unlike posters for performers, these balls were one-night events, so far fewer posters would have been printed. Crouse p. 156, Colin 117.

Paul Colin, Le Tumulte Noir portfolio

    Est: $20,000 - $25,000

Paul Colin Le Tumulte Noir portfolio 1929 lithograph with color pochoir additions 18.75 h x 12.5 w in (48 x 32 cm) This portfolio was published at the height of "the Black Craze" in Paris, a period of several years during which black dancers and jazz musicians enjoyed great popularity. It all started in 1925 when the troupe then playing at the Plantation Club in New York City's Harlem neighborhood was brought to Paris, and lead dancer Josephine Baker introduced the French to that new sensation: the Charleston. Colin, who was in on the whole thing from the beginning, collected the sketches he made of her and of other black performers who followed; these forty-eight plates, published in a limited edition of 500, are the result. The images were drawn directly on the stone by Colin at the Chachoin plant in Paris and then stencil-colored (the term for this technique is pochoir). Pulsating with color and movement, the portfolio contains the very best of Colin's lithographic work. This is the complete portfolio. Colin met her at the Apollo, where he was kept busy with decors, programs, advertisements and posters. It was there she created the French version of the celebrated 'Trial of Mary Dugan,' and, in 1930, starred in the Noel Coward operetta, 'Waltz Time'" (Colin, p. 9). This is the rare, larger format variant of the design. Imp. H. Est: $2,000 - $2,500

Paul Colin Tabarin 1928 23.125 h x 15.375 w in (59 x 39 cm) The Bal Tabarin opened its doors in 1904, and became home to the cancan, then later the Charleston, and then whatever the latest dance craze was. From the outside it looked like the entrance to a tomb, but inside it was hot and, as the magazine Candide put it: "The star of the Tabarin, that's woman" (March 4, 1937). Colin expresses this idea graphically with one of his favorite techniques, a multiple exposure portraying the history of dance at the Tabarin: Jane Avril does the cancan, La Argentina swishes her flamenco skirt, and Josephine Baker struts toward us doing the Charleston. This is the smaller format. Paul Colin A Nous la Liberte 93.25 h x 124.25 w in (237 x 316 cm) "In Rene Clair's brilliant and lighthearted satire of social protest, 'A Nous La Liberte,' Raymond Cordy and Henri Marchand are cell mates who separate during an escape attempt. One becomes an industrialist whose mass-production methods closely parallel the dehumanizing prison routine, while the other remains a free soul. Their reunon some years later results in Cordy abandoning his wealth and joining Marchand on the open road. It was one of the most influential films of the early sound era and pioneered the functional, integrated use of music. It served as inspiration for Charlie Chaplin's 'Modern Times.' And it produced a Colin poster which simply but effectively captured the free spirit and human impulse which Rene Clair sought to convey in his film" (Colin, p. 9). Original Vintage Poster for Zenith Watch Company by Paul Colin c1950

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Zenith Watch Company traces its history to 1843, making it one of the oldest Swiss watch manufacturers. Zenith is best known for the high beat El Primero movement - revolutionary when first created, and still powering some of the finest watches ever produced. Zenith has received over 1500 first prizes from observatories for the precision of its timepieces. The poster was created in the 1950's by the noted French artist, Paul Colin (1892-1985). Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Negre, which helped to launch the career of Josephine Baker (who became his mistress), Paul Colin worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art deco at the outset, (his Le Tumulte noir is a masterpiece of the genre), his style quickly became highly personal and impossible to categorize: the synthetic accuracy of his portraits, the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work today remains relevant and fresh. A student of Eugene Vallin and of Victor Prouve, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. He is the author of over 1400 posters and many theatrical sets and costume designs. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
