  • Jacob Grimmer, Jan Collaert - Landscapes around Brussels - Sint-Gillis
    Dec. 09, 2025

Jacob Grimmer, Jan Collaert - Landscapes around Brussels - Sint-Gillis

    Est: €240 - €360

Jacob Grimmer (1525-1590) ,View of the village of Sint-Gillis and the southeastern part of the Brussels ramparts with the Halle Gate. This print is part of a series of views from the Brussels area. A first state before before the number bottom right. New Hollstein Dutch 1230 (I/II). One of the small landscapes composed by the renaissance master in landscapes. These engravings were a source for other painters, followers, in the 16th and 17th century. ----- Nice 1st state of Collaert's view around Brussels. Later editions by C.C. Visscher ascribed authorship to Hans Bol, but also Jacob Grimmer is suggested as most likely "inventor". The views represent villages, castles, and abbeys in an intimate, direct manner based closely on studies from life. Their naturalistic approach differs from that of the imaginary, mythological panoramas produced by Italian landscape artists of the period. By publishing regional landscapes Van Luyck met the needs of a clientele which was increasingly interested in regional geography; a taste first generated by Hieronymus Cock in 1560. This first unnumbered state published by Hans Van Luyck who flourished in Antwerp around 1580. --- Rare, especially in this early first state.

(trimmed within the plate mark), four (4).  Provenance:  Beryl Gascoigne, UK.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present series of prints serve as an iconic example of the depiction of 'The Four Continents', a popular subject amongst 16th- and 17th-century artists, which reflected a growing interest in the foreign lands which explorers were encountering over the period. Although the theme was treated by a number of artists, the present set of compositions was particularly significant, with the Metropolitan Museum noting of Collaert's depiction of the personification of America that, 'While not the first representation of a feather headdress in New World prints, this may have been one of the most influential'. Another set of this same series sold at Galerie Kornfeld Auktionen AG, Bern, on 12 September 2025, lot 3017 (£3,425 hammer).

Adriaen Collaert (around 1560 Antwerp - around 1618 ibid.) after Hans Bol (1534 Mechelen - 1593 Antwerp): The sermon of John the Baptist Biblical sermon scene in a wooded landscape, c. 1580, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Sadler excud: / A. Collaert fec: / HBol invent:". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Hic etiam affulsit quies Spiritus almus, anhelant Redemptio corporis. Felices etenim reddit, concepta Fide, Spes, Magno pii solatio. Rom. 8.". Date: c. 1580 Description: The artwork depicts a biblical scene in a sprawling forest. Several figures in classical robes are grouped in the foreground, listening to a sermon or teaching. The composition is balanced, with large trees framing the sky and creating spatial depth. The figures are worked out in detail, with calm, concentrated facial expressions. In the background is a hilly landscape with a town in the distance. The lighting conditions are even, lending the scene a meditative calm. Symbols of wisdom and teaching can be recognised through the gestures and the presence of a preacher speaking from an elevated position.
