  • Two Oversize Royal Crown Derby Coffee Cans late 18th/early 19th century

Two Oversize Royal Crown Derby Coffee Cans late 18th/early 19th century

    Est: $600 - $800

Two Oversize Royal Crown Derby Coffee Cans late 18th/early 19th century Both finely painted after caricature engravings in The Passions, Humorously Delineated (first published 1773) by Timothy Bobbin (John Collier, English, 1708–1786); the first depicting an emblem of married life, 'When Filthy Lucre Joins a Man and Wife' (plate 3); the second depicting a toothpulling scene, 'The Dentist' (plate 6), both with hand-painted iron-red Royal Crown Derby mark and a hand-painted number, 36 and 24, respectively. (2). (H: 5, W: 6 1/2 in.) Provenance Property from a private collection in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Can with emblem of married life: with chip and repair at rim (under 1/2 in. long), with light to moderate scratches to surface, especially blue matte painted surface, some small areas of chipped paint, some small areas with abrasions. The matte blue paint appears to have been later painted over gilt decoration (likely similar to the other can in this grouping), some areas of gilt are visible underneath the blue paint. Can with toothpulling scene: light scratches to surfaces, a few small areas of loss to painted surface at painted scene, three horizontal hairline cracks to body, one hairline to underside, and some areas of concentrated craquelure, possibly from damage. Both with craquelure to glaze, especially interior and handle; both handles with discoloration and moderate to heavy wear to gilt, especially at edges. Fritting to undersides.
