He began printing laser images of the flattened creatures, placing them into 35mm glass slide carriers and scanning them. Collishaw looked for facets of an image that could be manipulated into something identifiable. He commented of the series: 'As I manipulate them, the butterflies evolve into other beings. I discovered that to make them work, I had to find some other creature in there and tease it out. The right time to finish was when the beast had fully emerged... It was important not to push them further into caricature. They had just to hold a form together which was other than what they were, a squashed butterfly... It raises the question: is it construction or destruction?’

Venal Muse Left, Viridor (2012) Edition 2/3 (aside 1 artist proof) C-print in black wooden frame, 125.5 x 105.5 cm Provenance: - FaMa Gallery, Verona, 2013 - Collection Susanna Vorst, the Netherlands Note: Including a certificate of authenticity. Mat Collishaw is a prominent artist from the influential generation that emerged from Goldsmiths’ College in the late 1980s. He took part in the seminal Freeze exhibition in 1988 and has showcased his work extensively around the world since his first solo show in 1990. He is known for his evocative explorations of human subconscious and societal issues through various media. His installation The Venal Muse features resin sculptures of plant-like forms encased in antique-styled vitrines, emerging from polluted soil. Inspired by Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal, these mutated flowers with flesh-like petals reflect themes of decadence, corruption, and the impact of genetic manipulation, critiquing modern, media-saturated culture. Collishaw's work often intertwines historical references and contemporary concerns, compelling viewers to reflect on the complex relationship between nature and human influence.

Mat Collishaw, British b.1966- Angel, 2009; lenticular print in colours, signed and inscribed in black marker on the reverse, a proof aside from the edition of 3, image 64 x 74cm (framed) (ARR) Note: The present work, an edition of which was exhibited in the artist's Nebulaphobia exhibition in 2009, draws inspiration from Fra Angelico's Annunciation of 1442. The exhibition explored the theme of the fear of clouds or fog in both a literal and metaphorical sense (including a fear of the void or of nothingness). Here, Collishaw makes the angel Gabriel, who is traditionally depicted announcing the news to Mary that she has been chosen to carry the son of God, appear and disappear from view. Without the presence of the angel, the narrative of the entire story is brought into question: Mary suddenly seems alone, scared, and vulnerable.

    Est: £1,500 - £2,000

Mat Collishaw, British b.1966- Lame Duck II, 2009; lenticular print in colours, signed and inscribed in black marker on the reverse, a proof aside from the edition of 3, image 38.5 x 29cm (framed) (ARR) Note: Still-life paintings of food, fruit, and flowers, such as 'Still-life with Game' by 18th-century Spanish artist Jose Lopez-Enguidanos, were popular across Western Europe from the 17th century on. These paintings, filled with items that bring great delight but are inherently perishable, were intended to remind the viewer of the brevity of life and the ephemerality of earthly pleasures. However, in the present work, Collishaw has intervened in this old master painting and reanimated the dead duck at centre upon which an 18th-century viewer might have dreamt of feasting. Thanks to the holographic effect produced by lenticular prints, the duck's breast moves gently up and down, eerily drawing attention to the violent undercurrent of the scene.
