Joe Colombo Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Sculptor

Joe Colombo, born Cesare Colombo (30 July 1930 – 30 July 1971) was an Italian industrial designer.

Cesare "Joe" Colombo was until 1949 educated at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, the academy of fine arts, in Milano as a painter and studied afterwards until 1954 Architecture at Politecnico di Milano University.

In 1951 he joined the Movimento Nucleare, founded by Sergio Dangelo and Enrico Baj. The following four years Colombo was active as a painter and sculptor of the abstract Expressionism and exhibited his works with other members in Milano, Torino, Verviers, Venice and Brussels.

In 1955 Colombo joined the Art Concret group, but gave up his painting to promote his Design Career. Before he cooperated at an exhibition for the tenth Triennale of 1954 and documented the Ceramic Designs of an international meeting in Albisola. For his presentation Colombo created for example three exterior seatings which were combined with a "shrinelike" presentation of TVs.

In 1959, Colombo had to take over the family company, which produced electric appliances, and started to experiment with new construction and production technologies. In 1962 Colombo opened his own interior design and architecture projects, mostly for lodges and skiing.

Colombo designed products for Oluce, Kartell, Bieffe, Alessi, Flexform and Boffi.

Colombo died in 1971 on his 41st birthday.

Joe Colombo (Italy, 1930-1971) for Comfort Fratelli Longhi (Founded in 1959) 1963 Elda model armchair, has a 360º rotating circular base, which supports two petal-shaped fiberglass shells, padded inside with anatomical tubular cushions upholstered in black leather. Measurements: 97 x 94 x 92 cm This armchair began to be manufactured in 1965 by the Comfort publishing house and then by F.LLi Longhi in the 2000s. With his project for the Elda armchair, Colombo achieved a synthesis between classic furniture from the 30s, American and Scandinavian furniture from the 50s. Achieving a mix of futurism and functionalism. Becoming an icon of the 20th century, "Futuristic design for observers of the 1960s-1970s", anticipating the profound impact of technology on society that would increasingly allow people to retreat to the private spaces of their homes. , creating an ideal throne for the new citizen, comfortably connected to the world through television, telephone and other means of communication. Joe Colombo, one of the most innovative Italian furniture designers of his generation, named the chair after his wife Elda and it can be found in the collections of, among others, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre from Paris.
