Painter, Sculptor

Joe Colombo, born Cesare Colombo (30 July 1930 – 30 July 1971) was an Italian industrial designer.

Cesare "Joe" Colombo was until 1949 educated at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, the academy of fine arts, in Milano as a painter and studied afterwards until 1954 Architecture at Politecnico di Milano University.

In 1951 he joined the Movimento Nucleare, founded by Sergio Dangelo and Enrico Baj. The following four years Colombo was active as a painter and sculptor of the abstract Expressionism and exhibited his works with other members in Milano, Torino, Verviers, Venice and Brussels.

In 1955 Colombo joined the Art Concret group, but gave up his painting to promote his Design Career. Before he cooperated at an exhibition for the tenth Triennale of 1954 and documented the Ceramic Designs of an international meeting in Albisola. For his presentation Colombo created for example three exterior seatings which were combined with a "shrinelike" presentation of TVs.

In 1959, Colombo had to take over the family company, which produced electric appliances, and started to experiment with new construction and production technologies. In 1962 Colombo opened his own interior design and architecture projects, mostly for lodges and skiing.

Colombo designed products for Oluce, Kartell, Bieffe, Alessi, Flexform and Boffi.

Colombo died in 1971 on his 41st birthday.

JOE COLOMBO (Milan, 1930-1971) for Oluce. Table lamp "Coupé". First edition. White lacquered metal. In good condition, with marks of use.

    Est: €750 - €800

JOE COLOMBO (Milan, 1930-1971) for Oluce. Table lamp "Coupé". First edition. White lacquered metal. In good condition, with marks of use. Desk lamp with metal structure. Created in the sixties, the "Coupé" in arc is a lamp of simple and functional design, with height adjustable diffuser and arc axis, in fact, it is one of the first to present this form, which allows to focus the light downwards. The Coupé series was initially conceived as a variant of the Spider family, created by the same designer, from which it retains the base and stem. In 1968, Coupé won the International Design Award of the American Institute of Interior Designers of Chicago. It is part of the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York and the Neue Sammlung Museum in Munich. Over the years, many Coupé models have been created (from the historic table lamp to floor and wall lamps), making it one of Oluce's best-known and best-loved collections. Colombo was an industrial designer born in Milan. Before turning to design (starting in the 1950s), he was a painter and sculptor. Some historians believe that it was Colombo who made Milan the capital of design. He designed flexible, compressed interiors with rooms that could vary in size and placement within a single floor. His futuristic vision led him to devise circular shelves that hang from the ceiling, glasses with an off-center foot so that wine and cigarettes could be held in the same hand. He believed in plastic as a modern, revolutionary and effective material. He began experimenting with new materials, such as reinforced plastic, and with novel construction techniques and manufacturing methods. His first design for Kartell was chair No. 4801 (1963-1964) in three pieces of plywood. Such a design inspired his later work with plastic, such as the Universale Chair No. 4860 (1965-1967), the first adult seat molded in injection molded plastic (ABS). He died at the age of 40 while preparing for a major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

JOE COLOMBO (Milan, 1930-1971) for Stilnovo. Space Age Triedo" lamp, 1970s. Lacquered and chromed metal. It shows slight signs of wear due to use and age.

    Est: €700 - €750

JOE COLOMBO (Milan, 1930-1971) for Stilnovo. Space Age Triedo" lamp, 1970s. Lacquered and chromed metal. It shows slight signs of wear due to use and age. Measurements: 62 x 30 x 30 cm. The lampshade of the Triedo lamp is reminiscent of the corolla of a flower in bloom. It consists of three curved metal shades that surround the light source, projecting a soft and warm light. It was made in the 1970s by Stilnovo, a golden age for experimental design determined by optimism and forward-looking creativity. Its white lampshades are closely linked to the Space Age, the name given to the period when the space race was launched, starting in 1957 with the launch of Sputnik. This fever to conquer space also reached design, and during the sixties and seventies a decoration model was developed based on an idyllic vision of the future, and on everything to do with spaceships, new technologies and innovative materials. Colombo was an industrial designer born in Milan. Before devoting himself to design (starting in the 1950s), he was a painter and sculptor. Some historians believe that it was Colombo who made Milan the capital of design. He designed flexible, compressed interiors with rooms that could vary in size and placement within a single floor. JOE COLOMBO (Milan, 1930-1971) for Bieffeplast, Padua, Italy. Vintage trolley "Boby", 1970s. White ABS plastic. With small black wheels. With designer's and manufacturer's stamp. This piece is part of the permanent collection of the MoMa in New York and the Milan Triennale. Smau Prize in 1971. It shows signs of wear due to use and the passage of time as it is a vintage piece. Measurements: 74 x 43 x 43 cm. The "Boby" trolley is considered one of Joe Colombo's most emblematic pieces and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It features a white plastic frame with several storage compartments and black plastic wheels. The functional and versatile design of "Boby" has made it a sought-after choice for a variety of settings, from offices to homes. It was originally designed as a storage unit for medical supplies and equipment. It was first manufactured in 1969 by the Italian company Bieffeplast, and was later adapted for use in offices and homes. Architect and designer Cesare Colombo nicknamed "Joe" Colombo, was an artist, architect, furniture, product and interior designer who was essential to Italian design in the 1960s. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he devoted himself, among other things, to painting, sculpture and drawing, skills that would serve him to develop his career as a designer by creating his own studio in 1962. Throughout the 1960s he collaborated with important publishers such as Kartell, O-Luce and Zanotta. Many of his works are still exhibited in museums around the world and the artist is the subject of periodic retrospectives, studies and exhibitions. During the 1960s, the designer worked mainly on the creation of furniture that stood out for being easily modular, flexible and practical, as is the case with these chairs, which can be transported and adapted to the needs of their user. He focused on a global design, where the furniture elements transcend space and architecture. In this way, Colombo moves towards a form of design that helps the user to save space and time. Some of the Italian designer's most famous works are the "Elda" armchair (1963), the "Continental Library" (1965), the "Universal" (1967) and "Tube" chairs (1969) and the "Chariot Boby" (1969). His career and achievements led him to participate in the XIV Milan Triennale, exhibiting some interior design proposals. In 1964 he won the gold medal at the Milan Triennale with the acrylic table lamp, which is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Philadelphia. In 1972, shortly after his death, his overall furniture project was exhibited in the exhibition "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" held at the MOMA in New York, realized by ELCO - FIARM, Boffi, Ideal - Standard, with the help of Sormani. In 1984, a retrospective of his work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in Villeneuve. Later, in 2005, the Milan Triennale hosted the retrospective Joe Colombo Inventing the Future.
