Giunto a Roma verso il 1670-71, la sua presenza vi Ã¨ documentata dal 1672 al 1694, anno in cui lasciÃ² l'Italia. TerminÃ² probabilmente i suoi giorni a Bruxelles, dov'Ã¨ segnalato dal 1699 al 1701. Poco noto sino a tempi relativamente recenti, David de Coninck fu ad ogni evidenza tra gli esponenti piÃ¹ importanti dello sviluppo in senso barocco della natura morta a Roma. Spesso confuso, anche negli inventari antichi, con Michele Pace, de Coninck condivide con lui e con Abraham Brueghel il gusto per l'ambientazione en plein air di fiori, frutti e animali. ZWEI HENNEN MIT HASE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 71 x 60 cm. In ebonisiertem Profilrahmen. Wir danken Herrn Dr. Fred G. Meijer für freundliche Hinweise zur Katalogisierung. Darstellung zweier Hühner inmitten einer Landschaft neben einem Repoussoirbaum, vorn rechts ein sitzender Hase. Das gleiche Motiv in liegendem Oval wurde bei Sotheby‘s am 5. Juni 2014 unter Lot 104 angeboten. Im liegenden Rechteck ist beim RKD in Den Haag unter Nummer 15682 ebenfalls ein Gemälde mit diesem Motiv registriert, bei dem erneut das am Boden pickende Huhn angeschnitten ist, was darauf hinweisen dürfte, dass das Gemälde kein Fragment ist. STATTLICHES VOGELSTÜCK MIT PFAU, ROSEN UND PARKANLAGE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 160 x 230 cm. In vergoldetem reliefverziertem Rahmen. Eingegliedert in eine Parkanlage, deren Zuweg von auf den Fluchtpunkt des Gemäldes zulaufende Zypressen gesäumt wird und von einer französischen von Hecken strukturierten Gartenstruktur gekennzeichnet wird, ist ein Architekturfragment zu sehen, an dessen Mauer sich ein blühender Rosenstrauch emporwindet und somit die Bildmitte markiert. Ein imposanter Pfau darunter ist neben weiteren Vögeln zu sehen, die teils auf der Erde, teils ihrer Natur gemäß in der Luft zu sehen sind. Hondecoeter, aber auch de Coninck kommen für dieses Gemälde in Frage. Ähnliche Kompisitionen mit Vögeln in Parkanlagen finden sich etwa in der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien (Inv. Nr. 758) oder im Fries Museum, Leeuwarden (Inv. Nr. PTII-0240). Unter einer Eiche, deren Blätter an knorrigen Ästen das Stillleben überfangen und scharf mit dem dahinter liegenden blauen Himmel kontrastieren, steht ein Korb mit darin und davor befindlichen Jagdtrophäen wie einem Hasen und einem Eichelhäher, daneben ein aus dem Bildfeld hinausblickender Jagdhund. VON DREI HUNDEN BEWACHTE JAGDTROPHÄEN Öl auf Leinwand. 98 x 135 cm. In schwarzem Flammleistenrahmen. In freier Landschaft im abendlichen Licht ein erlegter großer liegender Hirsch mit blutigem Maul, vor ihm ein Paar erlegter Vögel, die von links eifrig von einem braun-weiß gefleckten Hund beschnuppert werden. Rechtsseitig ein großer hockender Hund mit schwarz geflecktem weißem Fell und dunklen Augen, aufmerksam seitlich aus dem Bild schauend. Hinter dem Hirschen ein dritter, aufrecht stehender Hund, den Blick voller Konzentration zur linken Seite gerichtet. Malerei in überwiegend beige-brauner Farbigkeit, in der typischen Manier des Künstlers. Vereinzelt Retuschen. Anmerkung: Der Künster war ein flämischer Tier- und Stilllebenmaler. Er war Schüler von Pieter Boel (1622-1674) in Antwerpen und wurde 1663 Meister der dortigen Lukasgilde. The painting is attributed to David de Conick, an artist from Antwerp. Pupil of Pieter Boel, the painter left for Rome in the 1670’s, where he arrived after a circuitous trip through Europe. He stopped first in Paris where he met the animalist artist Nicaise Beernaerts, then at the Duchess of Bavaria, and finally in Vienna. He is remembered above all for the depictions of animals and still lifes that refer to the models of the Flemish Jan Fyt. The present canvas depicts a dog and a cat competing for a pheasant framed in a wooded landscape, interrupted on the right, by a corner of the sky; and on the left, by a stone vase. We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming this to be a work by de Coninck on the basis of an image.

August 2020, in Kopie. Die Zuschreibung an den genannten Künstler bestätigt durch Fred G. Meijer. Horizontale Komposition mit einem Uferstück, neben dem eine Eiche mit niedriger Verzweigung und Belaubung steht, daneben in schrägem Auflicht beleuchtet eine sich auf einen Kormoran herabstürzende Eule nebst Enten, deren Hälse emporgereckt und deren Schnäbel geöffnet sind. Entstanden Ende der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Anmerkung: David de Coninck war vorwiegend spezialisiert auf Stillleben mit Tieren, manchmal in einem Rauminneren, manchmal in einem natürlichen Umfeld, wie hier an einem Teich. RefMas121121 In these two paintings, Davd de Coninck presents various animals in an evening landscape with impressive naturalism and anatomical precision. The animals, depicted in a close-up and thus appearing like portraits, belong to the Flemish painter's repertoire of motifs. Thus, an almost identical dog can be found in a painting by de Coninck in the Bredius Museum in The Hague, while the magnificent turkey reappears, among others, in a painting in Burghley House, which has no fewer than eight paintings by the artist. In the painting with turkey there is also a very similar peacock, two equally comparable rabbits and finally a cockerel in a similar position. Moreover, for the depiction of the rooster, a preparatory drawing has been preserved in the Courtauld Institute in London, which is a rare stroke of luck. David de Coninck was one of the most famous animal painters of his time, who was initially a pupil of Peeter Boel, but was then influenced above all by Jan Fyt. After stays in Paris, Vienna and Venice, de Coninck lived in Rome from 1671 to 1694 before returning to his Flemish homeland.

The present composition is typical of the high baroque manner of still-life painting of which David de Coninck was among the leading exponents. At the centre of the composition a red parrot perches on a stone pedestal that also supports the bust of a deity, probably Venus, surrounded by roses which were sacred to the goddess. Represented below is an abundance of flowers and fruit including melons, peaches, grapes, pomegranates, figs, hazelnuts and cherries. A richly ornamented salver emerges from behind the fruit on the right. The background is dominated by an Italianate garden, embellished with trees and enclosed by a balustrade ornamented by large vases. As was frequent artistic practice among still-life specialists, de Coninck repurposed various elements of his repertoire for different works. The parrot depicted in the present painting for example reoccurs in a canvas in the Kunstmuseum, Basel, and in another conserved to the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes. The detail of a salver reoccurs also in other of his works. David de Coninck was active in Rome for almost thirty years, from the early 1670s, and the present painting belongs to this period. The pictorial vigour and exuberance of this work reveals echoes of the influence of the painter’s compatriot and aritistic antecedent, Rubens, combined with a mature understanding of his Italian, and specifically Roman, artistic milieu. Indeed, in Rome the painter was in contact with other still-life specialists, most notably Giacomo Galli, Lo Spadino and Michelangelo del Campidoglio, with whom he exchanged compositional models and inventions. The continual competition and exchange between the artists of Rome’s specialist studios contributed to the diffusion of a luxuriant repertoire that is distinctive to Roman baroque still-life painting. David de Coninck trained in the Antwerp workshop of Pieter Boeland was later made a master of the Guild of Saint Luke there in 1664. He may also have frequented the studio of Jan Fyt to specialise in animal painting. From 1664 he was in Paris and from 1672 he is documented in Rome where he remained until 1694, working for the city’s most prestigious families as well as for European sovereigns and the nobility.

In einer weiten mit Steinmauer umgebenen Parkanlage eine große Vase, auf der ein rot-blauer Papagei sitzt. Davor, und um die Vase herum, werden stilllebenhaft verschiedene Tiere und Früchte präsentiert. Zu diesen gehören drei prachtvolle Hühner, davon gerade eines am Boden pickend, ein weißes und ein graues Kaninchen mit braunen leuchtenden Augen, am linken unteren Bildrand ein kleines Meerschweinchen sowie mehrere Äste und Zweige mit hellen Weintrauben, die auch links der Vase im Hintergrund zu erkennen sind. Zudem ist eine blaue Trichterwinde erkennbar. Nach rechts öffnet sich der Blick in eine weite Parkanlage, in der ein stolzer Pfau zu erkennen ist, dahinter geht der Blick in die Ferne mit Gebirge unter hohem, leicht grau-blauem Himmel. Pieter Boel’s student in his home town, he came to Rome, where he arrived after several stops in Europe. He stopped first in Paris where he met Nicaise Beernaerts and then to Vienna. It is mostly remembered for the depictions of animals and still lifes. The present canvas depicts a series of volatile framed in a broken and wooded landscape and it is full of allegorical meaning referring to the Christian world. The animals represented are all allegories having an high moral purpose although they are subjects belonging to the so-called "minor genre painting". In fact, the peacock is a symbol of resurrection and eternal life; the rooster, on the left corner, is related to the act of redemption because it sang at the moment of St. Peter’s denial; finally quails refer to St. John the Evangelist, who, according to tradition, had one as a pet in his house. The lot is accompanied by two expertises of Maurizio Marini and Giancarlo Sestieri.
