Philip Conard oil on canvas 71.0 x 89.0cm / 28 x 35in Exhibited: New English Art Club (indistinct exhibition label attached) Connard began his artistic career as a house painter, attending evening classes until he won a scholarship in textile design to the Royal College of Art. He travelled to Paris on a prize, and became an illustrator upon his return to London. He taught at Lambeth College of Art, with Edmund Blampied among his students. During this time he submitted paintings to the NEAC. After being invalided out of the artillery with shell shock in the War, he was appointed an official war artist to the Royal Navy. Connard was elected a full Academician in 1925, and was made Keeper of the Royal Academy School from 1945-1949.
