      * Hubert Coop [1872-1953]- East coast hay barges unloading on the Thames, St Paul's in the distance:- signed watercolour 37 x 52cm. * Notes. Thames barges played an important part in life along the river and in Essex by making use of the many creeks and inlets to collect produce from the farms and take it to markets and into the City. The barges were flat bottomed wooden craft to ensure that they could navigate the shallow inlets by sailing in as little as three feet of water and then lying on the mud without tilting. The distinctive barge rigging incorporates a large topsail, a mainsail and foresail on two masts. The rusty red colour is due to the waterproofing traditionally used on these sails. A regular cargo was hay and straw from the Essex countryside to service the thousands of horses and stables in London. Although the cargo was relatively light, it was bulky and it was common to see barges loaded with twelve feet of hay on the decks with the helmsman at the wheel totally blind relying on information from a crewman perched on top of the hay.

Hubert Coop (British, 1872-1953) St Ives Bridge and Quayside, Huntingdon monogrammed lower left "HC" watercolour h:34 w:53 cm Hubert Coop (1872-1953) was born in Olney, Buckinghamshire, the son of the Reverend Thomas Coop. He studied at the Lincoln School of Art where he obtained a First Class Degree in Design. He moved to North Wales to paint river and coastal scenes from nature. By 1913 he had moved to Lowestoft, Suffolk, where he continued to paint coastal scenes and windmills around Southwold and the Norfolk Broads. Later he moved to St Ives, Huntingdonshire, for a short period before taking up residence in Kettering, Northamptonshire. His 1918 entry to the Royal Academy has an address in Newland Street, Kettering. In the late 1920s he moved to Bideford, Devon, where he remained for the rest of his life. The Burton Art Gallery & Museum in Bideford has a selection of his watercolours and oil paintings on permanent display. His paintings can be seen at the Alfred East Art Gallery in Kettering. Coop was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in London in 1895, aged 22, and subsequently exhibited 24 works there. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy (20); the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham (20); and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (39). Hubert Coop was also co-founder of the Burton Art Gallery and Museum, and began the Gallery's collection of oils and watercolours.
