Emma Lampert Cooper (American, 1855-1920) Moroccan Coast

    Est: $500 - $800

Oil artist board. Signed 'E. Lampert Cooper' (lower left). Emma Lampert Cooper (American, 1855-1920) Emma Lampert Cooper was born in 1860 near Rochester, New York. Upon leaving the area, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School and the Art Students League in New York, and at the Delecluse Academy in Paris. Later returning to Rochester, she taught at the Mechanics Institute from 1893-1897 and was active in the art life of the city until her marriage to the painter Colin Campbell Cooper from 1897. After traveling in Europe for a period of time, the couple settled in New York City. There, working in an impressionist style, she turned to her husband’s favorite theme, the architectural treasures of New York and other historic cities. The Coopers traveled constantly in search of subjects and in the spring of 1913, they visited Charleston, South Carolina. Though nothing is known about their stay, their visit is recorded in Colin’s paintings of some of the city’s most historic and cherished structures, including St. Philip’s Church, Charleston. During their trip, they also visited Beaufort, a small coastal town about seventy miles south of Charleston, noted for its picturesque buildings, alleyways, and streets. Emma’s Old Beaufort, South Carolina is of a subject that she and Colin both painted, probably side-by-side and on the same day. Fluent brushwork and radiant color are typical of her vivacious style.

  • Emma Lampert Cooper, "Still Life of Flowers"
    Sep. 17, 2022

Emma Lampert Cooper, "Still Life of Flowers"

    Est: $500 - $1,500

Watercolor still life of flowers by noted artist Emma Lampert Cooper (American, 1855 - 1920). This painting, executed before the artist's marriage and under her maiden name of Emma E. Lampert, shows a group of yellow flowers in a bowl sitting on a table. The bowl and flowers are reflected in some water in the foreground. Lampert Cooper's handling of the difficult medium of watercolor to make an engaging and convincing image is impressive, and even more so for the masterful creation of the reflected image in the water. It is easy to see why Lampert Cooper was regarded as a master in her own time. Signed in upper left, "Emma E. Lampert". Framed and matted, not examined outside of frame. Frame is period, late 19th century in the Aesthetic style with gallery label for E.D. Buckingham of Utica, NY. Condition: good condition, minor aging of painting. Some discoloration on matting and some aging, minor chipping on frame. 15 1/2" wide by 10 3/4" tall (opening in matte). 26" wide by 21 1/2" tall by 2 1/8" deep (framed). Keywords: fancy, art, paint, Victorian, water color, wall, decor, decoration, floral, flower, Emma Esther Lampert
