Thomas Sidney Cooper Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Animal painter, Lithographer, b. 1803 - d. 1902

English artist Thomas Sidney Cooper earned the moniker Cow Cooper due to his exercise of almost exclusively painting cattle and farm animals. Popular Thomas Cooper animal paintings for sale include Sheep in a Wintry Landscape and Cattle Resting. At the precocious age of 12, he started work as a coach painter and scene painter. Cooper relocated to London to study at the Royal Academy. In 1833, his artwork made a premier appearance at the Royal Academy, where he commenced to exhibit for many years. Artist Thomas Cooper also showed at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institution. Cooper traveled to Brussels where he met Belgian artisan Eugene Joseph Verboeckhoven who made a profound impact on his animalier paintings. Painter Thomas Cooper established the Canterbury Sidney Cooper School of Art in 1882. Obtain some bucolic art for your home collection by browsing valuable animal paintings online.

BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Sidney Cooper was born in St Peter's Street in Canterbury, Kent, and as a small child he began to show strong artistic inclinations, but the circumstances of his family did not allow him to receive any systematic training. By the time he was twelve years old, he was working in the shop of a coach painter. Later he obtained a job as a scene painter; and he alternated between these two occupations for about eight years. He still felt a desire to become an artist, and all his spare moments were spent drawing and painting from nature. At the age of twenty he went to London, drew for a while in the British Museum, and was admitted as a student of the Royal Academy. He then returned to Canterbury, where he was able to earn a living as a drawing-master and by the sale of sketches and drawings. In 1827 he settled in Brussels and married; there he met Eugene Joseph Verboeckhoven. Because of the Belgian Revolution he returned to London, and by showing his first picture at the Royal Academy (1833) began an unprecedentedly prolonged career as an exhibitor. When the competition was announced for the decoration for the new Houses of Parliament, to be held at Westminster Hall in 1847, Cooper submitted The Defeat of Kellermann's Cuirassiers and Carabiniers by Somerset's Cavalry Brigade at Waterloo, June 18, 1815, without success. In order to complete the picture, the artist used Siborne's model of the battlefield then on exhibition in London, while a friend in Brussels sent him breastplates worn by the various cavalry regiments, and a trooper of the Life Guards acted as a model. He is mainly associated with pictures of cattle or sheep, a fact that earned him the epithet "Cow Cooper". Cooper collaborated between 1847 and 1870 with Frederick Richard Lee R.A. on several paintings, Lee undertaking the landscapes, and Cooper adding animals to complete the scene. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) in 1845 and Royal Academician (RA) on 22 June 1867. The oldest member of the Royal Academy of Arts at the time of the accession of King Edward VII in 1901, Cooper was in July 1901 received by the King in audience, and appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO).He was a great philanthropist in Canterbury, and used some of his wealth to distribute bread and coal to the poor at Christmas. The Alms Houses in Chantry Lane Canterbury are wrongly attributed to him as they were donated by Thomas Sankey Cooper and his brother Henry. Most notably in 1882 he developed his private art lessons into a full-fledged art school in Canterbury, located at his home and studio in St Peter's Street. Originally called the Canterbury Sidney Cooper School of Art, Cooper's art school is still in existence although it is now called the University for the Creative Arts. Amongst Cooper's more well-known students was Mary Tourtel, creator and illustrator of the Rupert Bear books for children. He wrote his reminiscences, under the title of My Life, in 1890. The largest public collection of Cooper paintings is owned by Canterbury City Council and housed at the Beaney House of Art & Knowledge in Canterbury. Examples are also held by the Tate Gallery, London, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and other public collections, mainly in Britain.

        THOMAS SIDNEY COOPER

        Est: €7,000 - €9,000

        Est: £1,500 - £2,000

Thomas Sidney Cooper, RA,  British 1803-1902 Eight sheep in a moorland landscape, probably Canterbury meadow;  oil on canvas, signed and dated 'T. Sidney Cooper R.A / 1867' (lower centre), 45.3 x 60.5 cm.  Provenance:  With The Meyer Gallery, Ingatestone;  where purchased by the current owner in 1989.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Sidney Cooper was a prolific artist, and arguably the pre-eminent British cattle painter of the 19th century. After initially working in the shop of a coach painter and as a scenery painter, Sidney Cooper travelled to Brussels in 1827, where he encountered the work of Eugène Verboeckhoven (1798-1881), an experience which had an immense influence on Sidney Cooper's own subsequent approach. The present scene, depicting a flock of sheep peacefully grazing on an open landscape, is absolutely typical of Sidney Cooper's compositions, recalling another painting which sold at Bonhams, London, on 21 September 2022 (lot 22) for £6,500, and a smaller work which sold at Bonhams, London, on 22 November 2022 (lot 42) for £2,000.

Thomas Sydney Cooper R.A. British, (1803 - 1902) Cattle and Landscape North Wales, 1853 oil on panel No visible signature. Title, Charles Roberson supplies label, and wax stamp verso. Biography from the archives of ASKart: In his hometown of Canterbury, England, Thomas Sidney Cooper became one of England's most prominent mid 19th century painters, with his signature work being bucolic landscapes with cattle and sheep. He began painting in Canterbury as an employee of a carriage painter and also in the theatre as a painter of backdrops. His talent was recognized, and he was invited to become a student at the Royal Academy in London, where he was especially encouraged by portrait painter Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). Cooper also spent four years in Brussels. There he became very impressed with the painting of peaceful landscape and marine genre scenes of Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691 and other Dutch Old Masters, especially the ones who did landscapes with billowing skies and grazing cattle. It was a motif he adopted for his own work. He was also much influenced by the brightness of the palette of Belgian artist, Eugene Veroeckhoven (1798-1881). As his career progressed from the time he returned to London in 1831, Thomas Sidney Cooper became known as "Cow Cooper because of the many precisely painted bucolic landscapes he did with grazing cattle, "some what sanitized so as not to offend urban clients, but also monumental enough to delight country squires who loved their livestock." Cooper also painted sheep onto his canvases. The best years of his career in terms of public attention were the 1840s and 1850s, which was during a period when Prince Albert and Queen Victoria commissioned him to paint their herds. He became a regular exhibiter at the Royal Academy. "No one has broken his record of sending at least one picture to the Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition every year from 1833 to 1902---a total of 266 entries." In 1882, he founded an art school in Canterbury, and his work is at the Canterbury Royal Museum. Source: "At Either End of the Market", Fine Art Connoisseur, January, 2007, p. 26
