    'Interior in Antwerp'. Oil on canvas. Signed and inscription lower right corner. Provenance: Childs Gallery, Boston; Mongerson & Winderlich, Chicago. Note: Leaving the States In 1866 Copland went to Antwerp to study at the Royal Academy, where he may have met fellow American artists such as Frank Millet, who, along with Frederick Porter Vinton, was said to be among his friends. While in Antwerp, Copeland copied paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and made studies of the interiors of buildings and churches. Copeland returned to Boston about 1872. The original painting by Fr̩d̩ric Montenard and is in the permanent collection of Mus̩e du pays Brignolais. Copeland was born into a wealthy Boston family. Following the Civil War, during which time he designed machinery to make artificial limbs for soldiers, Copeland went to Antwerp to study painting at the Royal Academy. He would travel between the US and Europe for the remainder of his years, exhibiting frequently in Boston, Paris, and Philadelphia.     Outstanding oil on canvas scene showing five mice led by a mouse holding a walking stick and hat with attached bag. They stop to see a fellow mouse who peers out of a hole in a gourd or loaf that is set on a brick with a green bottle which has been placed on a brick mantle with fireplace chimney behind. Signed lower right "Alfred B Copeland, Paris 1898". Below is another name which is illegible with a date. Copeland often copied other artist's work and notated this on his canvases. We assume this is the artist's name of the work that he copied. Housed in a fine bronze colored modern frame. SIZE: 22-1/4" x 27-1/4". CONDITION: Thick varnish layer, tape patches on reverse, restored. Good. 9-95458
