With inscription "Rome Cheremeteff" and an illegible inscription in Russian and German. 18 5/8" x 24 7/8" sheet, 29 1/4" x 35 1/2" framed. A masterpiece view of Rome in the 19th Century. "This evocative watercolor by noted artist Salomon Corrodi shows Rome unfolding panoramically in the near distance, as glimpsed from a vantage point high atop the Janiculum Hill on the western side of the city. The Janiculum, though not one of the original Seven Hills of Rome, is the tallest point in the city and offers the best views of the historical center. Corrodi's view looks out onto the russet and ocher hues of the buildings in the densely packed urban center, which are bathed in the warm light of early evening in Rome. Corrodi's view of the city is framed by the spreading branches of a stately oak tree in the foreground. This tree is not any anonymous bit of foliage but, in fact, a Roman landmark known as "Tasso's Oak." Torquato Tasso was a sixteenth-century scholar and poet, most famous for his epic "Gerusalemme Liberata" (Jerusalem Delivered), a moralizing fictional treatment of the Crusades. Legend holds that Tasso spent the final year of his life waiting in vain for official recognition of his achievement from Pope Clement VIII. Tasso, it is said, chose to do his waiting beneath an ancient oak tree near the Vatican on the northern ridge of the Janiculum. Tasso's Oak survives to this day, although marginally -- it lives on in the form of one twisted, viable branch amidst a dizzying network of iron scaffolding, masonry, beams, girders, bolts and rings clamping the remnants together. Two hundred years ago, however, Corrodi showed it as a thriving, verdant form that almost seems to stretch its limbs as it peers out over the city from a privileged vantage point. Corrodi sought to reproduce as faithfully as possible the landscapes and architectural motifs that he took as his subject matter. His views of Florence, scenes of Venice, and panoramas of Rome are characterized by intense hues by which he evokes the lush quality of Italian light. This superb watercolor is a foremost example of Corrodi's prodigious talents."

Signed and dated lower left: S. Corrodi. Rom. 1834 Salomon Corrodi accompanied his Zurich teacher Johann Jakob Wetzel on his study trips to the Upper Italian lakes. Thanks to Wetzel's support, he travelled to Rome for the first time at the age of 22. After his arrival on November 24, 1832, he joined the German artists' colony there, influenced by Franz Ludwig Catel, Joseph Anton Koch and Johann Christian Reinhart. Corrodi soon became a sought-after painter of Italian views in his time. His favourite motifs included views of Rome and the surroundings of the Eternal City. This depiction shows the view of Rome seen from Monte Pincio with the church of Santa Trinità dei Monti above the Spanish Steps. The Obelisco Sallustiano stands in front of the church. Due to its location above the Spanish Steps, the church with its double-tower façade is a popular veduta, postcard and photo motif. Corrodi's clients included Tsar Nicholas, Russian aristocrats and the English royal family.

"Sorrento. / 1884." und "Salomon Corrodi.1884.". -- -- Die Bekanntheit Salomon Corrodis beruht insbesondere auf seiner Begabung als Aquarellist, wohingegen Gemälde von seiner Hand selten sind. Vorliegendes fällt in die späten Jahre des Schweizers, der in Italien seine Heimat und Motive gefunden hatte. Eine erste Schulung zum Landschaftsmaler erhielt Corrodi noch in Zürich bei Johann Jakob Wetzel, ehe er 1832 über Genua und Pisa nach Rom übersiedelte. Hier verkehrte er im Kreis Joseph Anton Kochs und Johann Christian Reinharts und bildete sich im Atelier von Franz Ludwig Catel weiter. 1845 gehörte er zu den Gründungsmitgliedern des Deutschen Künstlervereins und sein Haus wurde insbesondere für Schweizer Künstler zum vielbesuchten Treffpunkt. Schnell stellte sich auch der Erfolg durch hochrangige Auftraggeber ein, zu denen etwa der Großherzog der Toskana und Zar Nikolaus I. zählten, wobei insbesondere der Zar mit seiner Entourage zu den beständigen Kunden gehörten. Dass sich Corrodi auch in späten Jahren noch um eine möglichst genaue Wiedergabe landschaftlicher und architektonischer Elemente bemühte, führt unser Gemälde vor. Die intensive und stimmungsvolle Farbgebung sowie das warme Licht, die seine Aquarelle auszeichneten, sind auch hier bestimmend. Nella Città Eterna ha modo di frequentare la vivace comunità di artisti stranieri che la popolava, come Bertel Thorvaldsen, Joseph Anton Koch e Franz Catel, attirando perfino l'attenzione dello zar Nicola I, quando nel 1845 potrà ammirare le sue opere esposte alla mostra organizzata in suo onore a piazza del Popolo. Tuttavia, l'imperatore russo non sarà l'unico prestigioso committente di Corrodi, tra i suoi estimatori ritroviamo infatti anche il granduca Leopoldo di Firenze e la regina Vittoria d'Inghilterra, come ulteriore dimostrazione del grande successo raggiunto tra la grande nobiltà italiana e internazionale. Dopo un iniziale utilizzo della tecnica a olio, Corrodi passerà all'acquerello, ritenendolo più congeniale per la realizzazione delle sue vedute, spesso realizzate durante i suoi viaggi, di Roma e della sua campagna, della riviera ligure o, come in questo caso, del golfo napoletano. Nelle sue opere, l'artista svizzero da sfoggio del suo naturale talento nel riprodurre con limpida luminosità ogni passaggio cromatico, come si evince nell'acquerello qui presentato, dove mette ben in evidenza le sue peculiarità da provetto vedutista, amante del particolare e del dettaglio. Partie an der Steilküste von Sorrent. -- Öl auf Leinwand. 45,3 x 60,2 cm. Unten links signiert und datiert "S. Corrodi / [18]84" sowie verso wohl eigenhändig bez. "Sorrento. / 1884." und "Salomon Corrodi.1884.". -- -- Die Bekanntheit Salomon Corrodis beruht insbesondere auf seiner Begabung als Aquarellist, wohingegen Gemälde von seiner Hand selten sind. Vorliegendes fällt in die späten Jahre des Schweizers, der in Italien seine Heimat und Motive gefunden hatte. Eine erste Schulung zum Landschaftsmaler erhielt Corrodi noch in Zürich bei Johann Jakob Wetzel, ehe er 1832 über Genua und Pisa nach Rom übersiedelte. Hier verkehrte er im Kreis Joseph Anton Kochs und Johann Christian Reinharts und bildete sich im Atelier von Franz Ludwig Catel weiter. 1845 gehörte er zu den Gründungsmitgliedern des Deutschen Künstlervereins und sein Haus wurde insbesondere für Schweizer Künstler zum vielbesuchten Treffpunkt. Schnell stellte sich auch der Erfolg durch hochrangige Auftraggeber ein, zu denen etwa der Großherzog der Toskana und Zar Nikolaus I. zählten, wobei insbesondere der Zar mit seiner Entourage zu den beständigen Kunden gehörten. Dass sich Corrodi auch in späten Jahren noch um eine möglichst genaue Wiedergabe landschaftlicher und architektonischer Elemente bemühte, führt unser Gemälde vor. Die intensive und stimmungsvolle Farbgebung sowie das warme Licht, die seine Aquarelle auszeichneten, sind auch hier bestimmend.
