  • Marie Cosindas (1923 – 2017) Portrait from the series “Athenaeum Ladies” 1969. C-print
    Jun. 26, 2020

Marie Cosindas (1923 – 2017) Portrait from the series “Athenaeum Ladies” 1969. C-print

    Est: $500 - $1,200

Marie Cosindas (1923 – 2017) Portrait from the series “Athenaeum Ladies” 1969, 6 ½ x 5 inch C print in a gold-trimmed (genuine gold) French mat, signed and dated beneath the image. Cosindas is best known for her work in color. At the suggestion of Ansel Adams she worked with Land on the development of the Polaroid color process. She did many photographs using the process as well as other color processes. Many are illustrated in her book “Color Photography” (1978). This is offered here again because it is such a good example of color photography that is interesting not because of the fame of the subjects but of the mastery of the composition and color. It was shot using outdoor balanced film, as can be seen from the view out the window at left, giving a special tone to the indoor portraits. Provenance: from Cosindas to the consignor. Here is a link to a PDF that makes it easy to browse the offerings.

    Marie Cosindas, 1923 - 2017, A Rare Original

    Est: $300 - $600

Marie Cosindas, 1923 - 2017, A Rare Original Terracotta Sculpture With Black Patina Depicting a Seated Tribal Figure, c. mid century. Marie was an American photographer best known for her evocative still life's and color portraits. She was one of the first photographers to incorporate color photography into her work, which distinguished her from other photographers in the 1960s and 1970s. Most of her photographs were portraits and pictures of objects like dolls, flowers, and masks. In 1962, Ansel Adams recommended Cosindas to Polaroid for their artist trial of their new instant-developing color film. She was the fifth woman to have a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1966.[3] Estimated more than 50 yrs old. Size and weight is provided in the last photo of this lot if not written within the lot description.
