The composition depicts the biblical episode narrated in the Book of Joshua (10:12-13), in which the Israelite leader implores God to halt the course of the sun and moon during the battle against the Amorites to prolong the daylight and ensure his army's victory. This passage was particularly valued by Baroque painters for its great narrative potential and the possibility of depicting expansive battle scenes. The work is firmly within the repertoire of Jacques Courtois, known as Il Borgognone, a painter of Burgundian origin active primarily in Italy, and especially in Rome, considered one of the great specialists in battle painting of the 17th century. His compositions are characterized by the dynamism of the cavalry, the tension of the horses in motion, and the complex organization of groups of soldiers deployed across broad landscapes. In this scene, the artist presents a battlefield animated by multiple episodes of combat, rendered with vibrant brushstrokes and an open composition that guides the eye through the movement of the troops. The figure of Joshua emerges as the narrative axis of the scene, while the dramatic lighting and atmospheric treatment of the landscape reinforce the epic character of the biblical episode. A very similar composition is known to exist in the Louvre Museum, confirming the widespread popularity and success of this type of scene within Courtois's oeuvre. He repeatedly painted battle compositions with variations in the arrangement of the groups and the development of the landscape. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Die Zuschreibung an Courtois kann durchaus eingeschränkt werden im Hinblick auf dessen Lehrer Salvatore Rosa (1615 - 1673), der sich wie hier weit mehr den allgemeinen, nicht mehr bestimmbaren Schlachtenthemen gewidmet hat. So ist die vorliegende Darstellung eher als zeitlos anzusehen. Dessen Name wird auch auf der gravierten Künstlerplakette auf dem Rahmen erwähnt. Auf einer Anhöhe ein dichtes Schlachtengetümmel, das sich unter einer Rauchsäule innerhalb einem dunklen Gedränge kulminiert. Links im Mittelgrund ein Festungsturm, rechts im Hintergrund ein sanfter Hügel, der auch als kompositionelles Gegengewicht zu den aufwühlenden Ereignissen im Vordergrund gesehen werden kann.     (Saint-Hyppolite, 1621 ; Roma, 1676) Battaglia Olio su tela, cm 106X216 Databile alla metà del Seicento, la scena di battaglia in esame manifesta una buona qualità di esecuzione e una peculiare costruzione scenica. Sono queste caratteristiche che inducono ad esprimere l'attribuzione a un artista influenzato dal Courtois. L'impegno con cui l'autore ha descritto le vesti e le armature, la cura con cui è distribuita la partitura cromatica e, di conseguenza, lo svolgimento narrativo della scena sono stilemi che appartengono al famoso artista d'origine francese ma romano d 'adozione. La cura per il dettaglio, prerogativa della cultura nordica, qui si amalgama con naturalezza alla struttura compositiva barocca ispirata da Salvator Rosa, così alla stesura si accompagna un gusto pittoricistico prettamente italiano, secondo una modalità che segna la moderna evoluzione del genere battaglistico e che influenzerà i suoi interpreti attivi alla fine del Seicento e durante i primi decenni del Settecento. Peculiare di questa scena è la rappresentazione del combattimento in primo piano, descritto con realismo e un'attenta regia, che pone in risalto il vortice di violenza che trova il suo apice al centro della tela, con il cavaliere che vibra colpi di spada, secondo una sorprendente intonazione realistica. L'autore diviene creatore di un nuovo stile, eroico e grandioso a cui si accompagna la capacità di rappresentare i fenomeni atmosferici, aspetto anche questo già colto dal Baldinucci che nel 1675 ricorda '...ma quelle ancora che non si possono dipingere ; tali sono tuoni, lampi, saette, fumi, fuochi, aria, nebbia ed altre a queste simili...dipinse il Borgognone meravigliosamente...'.
