Notre dessin constitue une étude pour l'encadrement du plafond du Palais-Royal dont la réalisation occupe Antoine Coypel de 1702 à 1703. Du plafond détruit avant la fin du XVIIIe siècle, nous connaissons une esquisse peinte conservée au musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angers (inv. 38 J. 1881). Antoine Coypel représente dans une percée lumineuse l'assemblée des dieux. Au centre, Vénus implore Jupiter en faveur d'Enée. De part et d'autre de cette scène principale se trouvent des personnages qui garnissent les bords de la composition. De nombreux dessins préparatoires documentant l'élaboration de ce décor nous sont parvenus 1.     Follower of Antoine Coypel,  French 1661-1722-  Diana bathing with her nymphs;

    Est: £300 - £400

    Follower of Antoine Coypel,  French 1661-1722-  Diana bathing with her nymphs;  oil on copper, 26.5 x 30.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present work is reminiscent of Coypel's distinctive mythological scenes, often featuring languorous nudes with flowing, pastel-coloured robes, reclining in a wooded landscape, such as, for example, his 'Alliance of Bacchus and Cupid' which sold at Christie's, London, on 16 December 1988, lot 61, and his 'Triumph of Galatea' which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 25 January 2001, lot 217. Coypel himself also painted a version of Diana bathing with her nymphs, which was made into a print by Gaspard Duchange (1662-1757).  The goddess Diana can be identified by the headdress she wears, adorned with a crescent moon with which she is associated.

    ANTOINE COYPEL OIL, THE JUDGMENT OF SOLOMON

    Est: $50,000 - $75,000

    COYPEL, Antoine (1661-1722). The Judgment of Solomon. Oil on canvas. 45" x 57" canvas, 52" x 67" framed. Provenance: Private collection, Philadelphia; Doyle, 2011 - $31,250. A Historically Significant Painting by Antoine Coypel of the Judgment of Solomon, Used to Create a Gobelin Tapestry. In her five-volume book titled Etat General des Tapisseries de la Manufacture des Gobelins depuis son origine jusqu'a nos jours, 1600-1900 author Maurice Fenaille devotes chapter four of the third volume (which is dated 1699-1736) to the Old Testament, where she discusses eight works of art by Antoine and Charles Coypel. Stated very clearly on the first page of the chapter, Fenaille notes that Antoine Coypel exhibited paintings he created after scenes from the Old Testament in the Paris Salons of 1699 and 1704. Specifically in 1699 he showed a work titled Le Jugement de Solomon. Later in the chapter, there is a discussion of a different version of Le Jugement de Salomon stating it was painted by Antoine Coypel in 1713 and it goes on to describe the visual aspects of our painting - where the columns are, how the characters are arranged, etc. As scholar Mme. Nicole Garnie notes in an analysis of the painting owned by Arader Galleries, 'this painting is a version of the Judgment of Solomon that Coypel exhibited at the Salon in 1699 and which later provided the composition for a tapestry by the Gobelins factory (1717-1720).

    Antoine COYPEL Paris, 1661 - 1722 Étude de tête pour Dieu le Père Pierre noire, sanguine et rehauts de craie blanche Signé en bas à gauche Coypel 12,2 x 9,4 cm Study of a man's Head for God Black and red chalks heightened with white 4 13/16 x 3 11/16 in.

Doubliert. 98 x 88 cm. In breitem vergoldetem Rahmen. ANTOINE COYPEL (Paris 1661-1722 Paris) A Kneeling Woman with Outstretched Arms * Figure with a Robe. Black and white chalk on blue laid paper, double-sided. 274x422 mm; 11x16 3/4 inches. Provenance: Private collection, Rhode Island. There is a similar chalk drawing on blue laid paper by Coypel, A Prostrated Man with his Hands Clasped over his Head (Study for the Sacrifice of Iphigenia), circa 1729, now in the British Museum, London, that is a study for a figure in the now lost painting of the same subject, completed soon before 1730, and known through a copy in tapestry. The study of the Seated Figure with a Robe on one side of the current drawing is similar to the figure to the left of the sacrificial pedestal of this now lost painting. The Kneeling Woman with Outstretched Arms may also be a study for a figure in Coypel's oil painting Athalie Expelled from the Temple, 1697, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
