John Crealock (British, 1871-1959) Still Life with Lilies

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Noted on back 'For Phyllis Keep', 'John Crealock 1938.' Catalogue Note: John Crealock began his artistic studies in Paris at the Academie Julian under the guidance of Antonio de la Gandara (1862-1917). He exhibited at the Salon de la Societe Nationale from the year 1911 to 1933. He worked for a period in London painting portraits, most notably the portraits of Cardinal Gasquet, Diana Gould and composer Isidore de Lara. Although he lived for the most part in Dublin, Ireland he spent considerable time painting the environs in and around Paris as well the coastal villages of France. Still Life with Lilies was painted as a gift for a friend. On the reverse side is inscribed 'John Crealock, July 1938, For Phyllis Keep'. It may be safe to assume that Crealock knew his friend enjoyed lilies and has presented a grand arrangement of only lilies. The background and table are completely unadorned leaving the focus absolutely on the lilies towering in their stoneware vase. The placement of the vase to the right of the canvas allows the lilies to spread out with abandon, as lilies want to do. Exhibited: Salon de la Societe Nationale

§ John Crealock (1871-1959) Portrait of The Right Honourable Mark Lemon Romer, Baron Romer, PC (1866-1944) signed and dated "J Crealock / 1933" (lower left) oil on canvas 125 x 100cm Born in Crawley, Sussex, Romer was the son of Sir Robert Romer and Bettey, née Lemon, daughter of Mark Lemon the founding editor of Punch. Following his early education at Rugby, Romer went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge where he read mathematics. He was called to the Bar in 1890 and was made King's Council in 1906. Romer was appointed to the Chancery Division of the High Court in 1922 and received the customary knighthood the same year. In 1929, he was made a Lord Justice of Appeal and sworn into the Privy Council. He was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 1938 and was made a life peer with the title Baron Romer, of New Romney in the County of Kent. The painting is executed in oil on canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is slack and there are general undulations across the surface and deformations following the tacks at the edges of the painting. There is a puncture to the canvas at the upper right corner. The paint layers are in a good condition overall. There is a thin varnish layer which is slightly yellowed but generally even and acceptable. There is a layer of surface dirt including white accretions. There are a few scuffs to the surface. 145 x 118cm framed

Exhibited: Probably exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, 1920, as catalogue no. 1 John Mansfield Crealock was born in Dublin John North Crealock and Marion Lloyd Crealock. He was educated at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Surrey and after serving for the British army he travelled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian from 1901-4. In England he showed with the RA from 1908 as well as the Goupil Gallery, New England Art Club and with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters to which he was elected a member in 1918. He exhibited with the RHA, Dublin, between 1910 and 1917, with addresses recorded in Chelsea, London. Although the title of the present work is unknown, Crealock adopted James Abbott McNeill Whistler's (1834-1903) method of titling his portraits of elegant women in lavish interior settings according to their colour arrangement as opposed to the names of the sitters, for example 'The Yellow Sofa' shown at the RHA exhibition 1914, catalogue no. 94.
