Attr. to Thomas Creswick (1811-1869). This oil painting on canvas is signed very faintly, lower right. It depicts a group of people in a river adjacent to a densely wooded area. Attached en verso is a Findlay Galleries tag, as well as gallery tag attributing this to Thomas Creswick. The work is housed in an ornate gilt frame. The work has craquelure, scuffs to its perimeter, scattered inpainting, and paint loss, lower right. The canvas measures 28" x 34 1/4", and the frame measures 34" x 40". It weighs 19.5 lbs. A beautiful landscape painting titled "A Cascade" by 19th C. British artist Thomas Creswick. In this painting, a lone figure stands upon a boulder while fishing in a river, surrounded by leafy trees along the riverbank, with a sublime waterfall - presumably the inspiration for the title "A Cascade" - in the distance. Creswick was among the best known of the Birmingham School of landscapists and was elected a Royal Academician on February 10, 1851. He painted outdoors from nature and especially enjoyed depicting locales with streams and rivers throughout the British Isles. John Ruskin applauded Creswick's observations from nature and rendering of foliage in the first volume of "Modern Painters" (1843). A stunning painting by Royal Academician Thomas Creswick mounted in a custom frame with the title and artist engraved on molding below the painting. The classic British School landscape depicting a pleasant summer day is nicely lit by the sun from left to right with interesting atmospheric effect portrayed on the trunks of the large creekside trees. A boy and dog approach a make-do crossing of rocks from the right. No monogram or signature was found. Canvas measures 32.25 x 50.5 with a framed size of 42.25 x 62 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. Thomas Creswick (1811 Sheffield - 1869 London) Landschaft mit Angler an einem felsigen Bachlauf in Wales Spätromantische Landschaft Creswicks, der zu der Birmingham School von Landschaftsmalern gehört. Schon 1827 debütierte er in der Society of British Artists in London, im darauffolgenden Jahr in der Royal Academy. 1842 wurde Creswick zum assoziierten und 1850 zum ordentlichen Mitglied der Academy gewählt. Nach genauem Studium der Natur und Landschaft, malte er meist vor Ort. Seine Lieblingsmotive waren englische und walisische Bäche. Öl/Lwd., doubl.; L. u. sign. u. dat. 1865. 45,5 cm x 63,5 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas, relined. Signed and dated 1865.
