    Dec. 20, 2025

    George Cruikshank (British 1792-1878) Hand-Colored Engraving on Paper

    Est: $90 - $180

    A vivid and dramatic early 19th-century naval scene by master satirist and illustrator George Cruikshank, this 1825 hand-colored engraving captures the tense moment aboard a British warship as a flogging is about to commence. Titled The Point of Honor, the work places the viewer directly on deck, surrounded by officers, sailors, marines, and the stark rituals of maritime discipline. Cruikshank's skill is unmistakable in the crisp linework, expressive faces, and dynamic arrangement of figures. The bustling composition draws the eye from the ranks of marines above deck to the assembled crew, to the bare-backed prisoner lashed to the grating. The careful hand-coloring brings life to the uniforms, rigging, and timbered deck, enhancing the sense of immediacy and tension. This is a powerful example of Cruikshank's narrative genius and his ability to blend documentary detail with theatrical energy.     George Cruikshank,  British 1792-1878-  The Kettle calling the Pot ugly names;

    George Cruikshank,  British 1792-1878-  The Kettle calling the Pot ugly names;  hand-coloured etching, 24.7 x 34.9 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  This rare cartoon was one of many at the time supporting Queen Caroline of Brunswick (1768-1821) in her divorce from George IV (1762-1830). Cruikshank's reworking of the phrase 'the Pot calling the Kettle black' emphasises the hypocrisy of George IV, notorious for his infidelity to his wife, as he condemns Caroline's affair with the Italian ex-soldier Bartolomeo Pergami (1783/84-1842).

    Est: $800 - $1,200

    CRUIKSHANK, George (1792 – 1878), after. The Pig Faced Lady of Manchester Square. The Spanish Mule of Madrid. [London]: H. Humphrey, March 21, 1815. Attractively hand-colored engraving of two images side-by-side; the first shows the porcine-visaged woman at a pianoforte, with a veil over her face. The second pictures a “wonderful monster” (a man with the face of a mule) “caught by Buonaparte.” Laid down. See BM Satires 12508A. Below the pig faced lady is a description of her condition: “This extraordinary female is about 18 years of age – of high rank & great fortune. Her body & limbs are of the most perfect & beautiful shape, but her head & face resembles that of a pig – she eats her victuals out of a silver trough in the same manner as pigs do, & when spoken to she can only answer by grunting. Her chief amusement is the piano on which she plays most delightfully.” The Truman catalog of Cruikshank’s satires lists this print as “very rare.”
