      ARTIST UNKNOWN (American, 20th century). Untitled Narrative Surrealism. [Ca. 1960s]. Oil on burlap laid and stretched over ¾” plywood. 24 x 40". Unframed. Provenance: Derek Joshua Beard. Beard was a private collector, art dealer (and artist) specializing in African American fine and decorative arts. Light surface dirt. Left edge of plywood has minor splitting. Staples on left rusted. Some minor burlap loss at sides and edges. Very good condition.

Provenance: Aquired from the artist, New York. A New York native, Cruz began his career associated with New York artists Lester Johnson (1919-2010, see lots 202-214), Jan Muller and Bob Thompson--artists who all applied the principles of Abstract Expressionism to figurative imagery. Of Cuban descent, Cruz spent the majority of his life in New York, excluding the 1970s when he taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is also found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.

Cruz (1938-2004) was an African-American artist of Cuban descent. He lived and worked most of his life in New York, studying at the Art Students League and The New School. He had his first solo exhibition at the Zabriskie Gallery in New York in 1963 amd exhibited widely throughout New York and Chicago (where he taught in the 1970s).
