    Charles Cullen (b.1939) WARRIOR WITH SWORD FIGHTING DEMONS ink and gouache over pencil with unfinished sketch of Celtic female warriors on reverse 36 by 53cm., 14.2 5 by 21in. Cullen, born in Longford, studied at the National College of Art and Design from 1957 to 1960 and later travelled through Spain for a year before returning to Ireland in 1962. Cullen was one of the founder members of the Project Arts Centre, Temple Bar in 1966 and later returned to NCAD as a lecturer in the Fine Art Department from 1971, where he held the position of the Head of Painting. In 1997, Cullen was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Since that point he has collaborated on a book with the poet Vincent Woods (2002), and is currently working on a series of etchings based on the 'Nighttown' episode of Joyce's Ulysses. His commissions include many portraits and murals, including the 'Stations of the Cross' in Iniskeen, Co. Monaghan. His work is held by the Hugh Lane, Allied Irish Banks and the Arts Council among others. Cullen is a current member of Aosdána.
