Provenance: Walter and Dorothy Donnelly (book label). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST WORK, with p.219 in the uncorrected state. Cummings' autobiographical first novel is based on his experiences as an enlistee with the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps in France, where he openly expressed anti-war views. He was arrested and held by the French military on suspicion of espionage for three and a half months. Of Cummings' first novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote: "Of all the work by young men who have sprung up since 1920, one book survives —The Enormous Room by e. e. cummings...Those few who cause books to live have not been able to endure the thought of its mortality." With "May 2 / '55" and "WATERFALL" at verso. When Cummings died in 1962, his wife, Marion M. Cummings, inherited all of his artwork, which in turn passed to their daughter, Nancy Cummings Andrews. The work was then donated to the Luethi-Peterson Camps, a non-profit organization that operated a number of summer camps for children with the stated purpose of “promoting international understanding” among children. The LPC’s main camp was in Freedom, New Hampshire, near the Cummings’ summer home, and it operated camps there and in Canada, Norway and elsewhere. The LPC also owned a property in Barrington, Rhode Island, where the artworks were stored. This painting was purchased directly from the summer camp. Donated by Ken Lopez, Hadley, MA.

The Enormous Room, first edition, first issue with "Shit!" present on final line of p. 219, signed presentation inscription from the author to front free endpaper, light browning to endpapers, original cloth, dust-jacket, spine darkened, spine ends and corners chipped, joints split and backstrip detached, splitting to fore-edges, front flap detached, portion of loss to upper panel, chipping and creasing to extremities, 8vo, New York, Boni and Liveright, [1922]. ⁂ A presentation copy of Cummings' autobiographical novel, based on his temporary imprisonment in France for his anti-war sentiments while serving as an ambulance driver. The signature and inscription are in differing inks but both in the author's hand and it appears that Cummings signed a number of copies at an earlier period and added personal inscriptions at a later date.

E.E. Cummings TLS With Original Pencil Elephant Doodle; Plus 2 Pcs of Bonus Material from Partner Marion Morehouse A small archive of material related to modern poet Edward Estlin "E.E." Cummings (1894-1962), including a 1p typed letter signed by him with an original drawing; a 4pp autograph letter signed by his longtime partner, Marion Morehouse (1906-1969); a Christmas card signed by Morehouse for Cummings and herself; and two original transmittal envelopes engrossed by Morehouse. The lot is comprised of: 1. A 1p typed letter signed by E.E. Cummings as "EEC" at right, with a wonderful original pencil drawing of a stampeding elephant at the letterhead (Cummings was also an accomplished illustrator and painter.) Written at Cummings's longtime flat at 4 Patchin Place in Greenwich Village, New York City on October 13, 1946. On watermarked paper typed "4 Patchin Place" near the bottom. Cummings has marked an acute accent in pencil above the word "naivete" in the third paragraph. Expected light transmittal folds, else near fine. 8.5" x 11." Accompanied by its original transmittal envelope engrossed by Marion Morehouse, including her signature for Cummings as "E.E. Cummings" on the return address panel verso. Cummings wrote his friend and fellow poet Theodore Spencer (1902-1949) in part, with unchanged spelling, punctuation, and other usage: "thanks for the Two Towers! Very few pro tem denizens of a nonworld nineteen-eighteenths buried in radiopuke and moviemerde can possibly or otherwise enjoy receiving your churches as much as myself I thank you also for beeing Allen T's bonnet about faerietales and again for the delightful dinner con Richards,whom(with perhaps even more than my usual naiveté) had supposed to be a sort of an unkind of a subhumansupergadget…" E.E. Cummings, best-known for his experimental poetical style, employs some of the same unconventional literary elements in this letter. These unexpected oddities of usage, typical of Cummings's poetry, include: - A lack of capitalization, though selective, not exclusive (ex. beginning new sentences with lower case letters, but capitalizing the proper noun "Allen T"); - A lack of spacing between characters and words (ex: "Richards,whom(with… [sic]"); - A scattering of foreign words and phrases (ex: "bonne chance" [French for "good luck"]); - Invented compound words of satisfying phonetic quality (ex. "radiopuke and moviemerde" ["merde" means "shit" in French); - Interesting imagery including the metaphor of a bee in a bonnet translated as "beeing Allen T's bonnet." Theodore Spencer had earned his doctorate at Harvard University (Cummings's alma mater) in 1928, and served as a Professor of English there between 1927 and his death in 1949. Also included are two pieces of bonus material written by Marion Morehouse, Cummings's last romantic partner and possibly his third wife (their marital status remains unclear.) Morehouse was one of the most famous fashion models of the 1920s and 1930s, posing for "Vogue" and "Vanity Fair." She met E.E. in 1934 and the couple lived together at 4 Patchin Place until the poet's death in 1962. 2. A 4pp autograph letter signed by Morehouse as "Marion" at the end of the last page. Written at 4 Patchin Place in New York City on October 1, 1946, and discussing the same dinner hosted by Spencer mentioned in Cummings's October 13th letter. Thus, we can compare Marion's "normal" thank you note (dated October 1st) with Cummings's rather fantastical one (dated October 13th), side by side. Accompanied by its original transmittal envelope also in Morehouse's hand and initialed "M.M.C." on the return address panel verso. In the letter, Marion mentions Cummings's "strange rather abstract hatred of the British" along with a potential future project with "Harper's Bazaar" illustrating fairy tales. 3. A Christmas card signed by Morehouse as "Cummings + Marion" and also signed as "M." This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. E.E. Cummings (1894-1962), often styled as e e cummings, as he sometimes signed his name, was an American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. He wrote approximately 2900 poems, two autobiographical novels, four plays, and several essays. In 1934, after his separation from his second wife, Cummings met Marion Morehouse, a fashion model and photographer. Although it is not clear whether the two were ever formally married, Morehouse lived with Cummings in a common-law marriage until his death in 1962. She died on May 18, 1969, while living at 4 Patchin Place, Greenwich Village, New York City, where Cummings had resided since September 1924. Offered here is a scarce 2pp. DOCUMENT SIGNED, 9 x 18 1/2 in., an Agreement of Lease made this 18th day of July 1947 between Hugh Keenan... and E. E. Cummings... [for] the apartment containing two rooms known as Apartment on the second floor rear floor in the building known as 4 Patchin Place in the Borough of Manhatten, City of New York, for the term of seventeen months... at an annual rental of Five Hundred Seventeen and 50/100 Dollars...," signed Hugh Keenan, E. E. Cummings, and H. C. Lovejoy (Notary Public). Folds (small breaks/ couple minor losses), some spotting/ light stain-- overall quite good.

Notes: While best known for his innovative avant garde poetry, Edward Estlin Cummings was also a passionate visual artist and considered painting his "twin obsession". The Armory Show that toured the U.S. in 1913 played a pivotal role in his artistic development. Of all the artists included in that exhibition, it was Cezanne who made the deepest impression on Cummings, not only stylistically but also with the subjects he chose to paint. As Cezanne lovingly painted his native Provence, Cummings did so with his studies of Mount Chocorua, near his parents' home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. As a poet and a painter, he was drawn to a multitude of subjects, though nature played the most prominent role in his work.

CUMMINGS, Edward Estlin, (American, 1894-1962): ''Three Heads After El Greco'' (''The Despolations''), Oil/Board. Approx 7'' x 14''. William Plumley Estate. He is hailed by the critics as a critical observer and chronicler of the modem era. Ezra Pound placed Cummings' book of poetry, Is 5, as the second most important book of the 20th century, ahead of James Joyce's Ulysses. Although best remembered for his visual poetry, his academic training at Harvard was in Graphic art. He wrote to his father late in 1923, ''One's tastes have not, I fear, materially changed: am still convinced that |I| am primarily a painter....'' [From an unpublished letter in the Cummings Collection of the Houghton Library, Harvard.] Similar comments are sprinkled throughout the many books, monographs, and articles about his art, much of which is housed in permanent university archives, museums, and private collections. Although he achieved substantial acclaim as a painter in the years between the wars, he later viewed the artistic establishment as hopelessly anti-intellectual and abandoned the New York galleries. He received a number of honors, including an Academy of American Poets Fellowship, two Guggenheim Fellowships, the Charles Eliot Norton Professorship at Harvard, the Bollingen Prize in Poetry in 1958, and a Ford Foundation grant. Nearly a thousand pieces of his original art were placed at the Gotham Book Mart (Gallery) in NYC in 1973 by the estate of Mrs. E. E. Cummings (Marion Morehouse). ''Three Heads after El Greco'') is approx. 7 x 14 oil on stiff cardboard; GBM description, ''fragments in sienna from 'The Despoliation.'' It survived the Paris years. In 1980, Marianne Morehouse, his widow, consigned a collection through the legendary Gotham Book Marte on Manhattan's West Forty-Seventh Street. The art was displayed on the second floor, and each had a Gotham number assigned and fully described in the catalog. Marion Morehouse (1906-1969); She was a model and photographer, who met E.E Cummings in 1932'onen 'referred to as his third wife, it is not clear whether the two were ever legally married.
