Printed identifications beneath the image include Lady Washington & Grandchildren, Gen. Washington, Family Physician, Quaker?an intimate friend of Washington, and Domestics.Lower margin bears the title "Death of Washington Dec. 14 A.D. 1799" and the early publisher's imprint "Lith. & Pub. by N. Currier, 2 Spruce St. N.Y." The Library of Congress records this issue as an 1846 hand-colored lithograph and lists it in the Currier & Ives catalogue raisonné as no. 1649. Presented under glass in an old wood frame. Visible overall toning and scattered staining, with areas of discoloration in the lower margin; original hand coloring remains readily visible.

The patriotic composition features six oval portraits of Oliver Hazard Perry, Stephen Decatur, Johnston Blakeley, William Bainbridge, David Porter and James Lawrence, arranged around a central depiction of the Battle of Lake Erie, with American flags, cannon, stars and naval ornament throughout.Published in New York by N. Currier, 2 Spruce Street, with the 1846 copyright inscription visible along the lower margin. The Library of Congress records the original issue as a hand-colored lithograph measuring approximately 13 x 17¼ inches overall and identifies it as No. 1 of Currier's three-print Naval Heroes of the United States series.Presented under glass in an old wood frame. May Morning" appealed to upper-middle-class city dwellers who aspired to build second homes in the country. The scene, one of four designed by Fanny Palmer around the changing seasons, shows a wealthy family enjoying the idyllic pleasures of rural America. The firm created a number of sets of prints "reflecting seasonal change and the ages of man. "American Country Life," the earliest series, included "May Morning," "Summer Evening," October Afternoon," and "Pleasures of Winter" and was followed in 1868 by "The Four Seasons."
