John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) American, 1942 Lithograph, "Our Good Earth". Signed in pencil lower right. Published by Associated American Artists (label verso). Born in rural Dunavant, Kansas, John Stuart Curry's career as an artist spans only two decades from 1924, when he first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, until his death in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1946. They were however, decades that shook the foundation of American life and art. Defined by the Great Depression and the country's entry into World War II, they were years of upheaval that would reshape the economic, political, and social structure of the nation and challenge the spiritual and moral grounding of all humanity. As a product of the Middle West, Curry was an artist of these times who was raised by a family of devout Scottish Calvinists who struggled in the face of the nation's economic ruin and social upheaval to find meaning in religious faith. Curry elevated the rural Midwestern landscape to a higher level of discourse - to a consideration of social and spiritual values. At its best Curry art has the power to transcend region, and that, in the end, is what makes it such a revealing window into a time and a place. Overall Size: 20 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) Performing Tiger 1934 The rare lithograph from an edition of only 25 prints is a nice dark impression signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right, further signed within the stone and image, and inscribed lower left listing the title, date and edition. The back side of the sheet bears the ink stamp of the Curry estate. As a painter of the American Scene in the 1930s, John Steuart Curry was to Kansas what Benton was to Missouri and Grant Wood was to Iowa. Seeking new inspiration, he embedded himself with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for approximately 10 weeks in early 1932 as it embarked on its spring tour through New England. On this tour, Curry immersed himself in circus life, creating a number of sketches and studies that would serve as the foundation for several significant paintings and lithographs, like the present example. In April of 1933, he had an exhibition of his circus paintings at Ferargil Galleries in New York, coinciding with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus opening their spring season at Madison Square Garden. This image is held by the National Gallery of Art and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Image measures 10.5 x 14, sheet is 14 x 18, and frame is 20 x 23.25 inches. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) Untitled (Frontier Woman and Homestead) Circa 1920s The large and well-composed scene of a woman scanning the mountain valley surrounding her cabin is signed lower right. During his years working as an illustrator in the 1920s, John Steuart Curry produced many works like this: poignant scenes that captured a decisive moment within a story and communicated a narrative with immediate clarity. These evocative scenes were commissioned as illustrations for serialized stories in monthly publications like Country Gentleman and The Saturday Evening Post. Positioned within the storyline, the artist's work served to clarify characters, set the stage or advance the story. The images worked like a single frame within the larger story. This approach to painting reflects the teaching of Curry's instructor at the Art Students League in New York, Harvey Dunn, who emphasized selecting a decisive moment, eliminating the nonessential, and allowing the viewer to complete the story mentally. Dunn also encouraged the use of color to convey atmosphere and light, and the strong integration of figures within the setting. As a result of Dunn's influence, Curry's illustrations from this period seem more like easel paintings than commercial graphics. The principle of selecting an evocative moment to frame a composition would inform Curry's Regionalist period paintings and murals as well. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) Duel Between Hard-Heart and Mahtorre 1940 The study in graphite and watercolor on paper was included in the show John Steuart Curry's America, a traveling exhibition organized under the auspices of ExhibitsUSA and the Mid-America Arts Alliance circa 1999. The image appears to be a study for the final painting that illustrated the scene titled Duel Between Hard Heart and Mahtotohpa in James Fenimore Cooper's The Prairie (Limited Editions Club, 1940). A very similar, more highly finished composition in colors and mixed media is in the collection of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. A label from the exhibition is verso. A letter of authenticity signed by Kathleen Curry is included. Image measures 8 x 6.25 with a framed size of 19H x 15W inches. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) Wisconsin Foothills Farm Circa 1940 The depiction of a farmstead in Wisconsin's Driftless Area, known for its bluffs, rolling hills, and river valleys, is signed and bears an unusual oil painted inscription of 'To Lloyd & Ellen Garrison' on the lower left front. This painting was previously held in the collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut. Lloyd Kirkham Garrison (1897-1991) was a Harvard educated labor law advocate and civil liberties defender raised by his grandfather Wendell Phillips Garrison (1840 - 1907), the third son of the famous abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Frederick Douglass was a close friend of the Garrison family and a frequent visitor to their home. Lloyd Kirkham Garrison knew well, and firsthand, the stories of the 19th century civil rights struggle. During John Steuart Curry's tenure at the University of Wisconsin, Lloyd Kirkham Garrison was Dean of the Law School and as such commissioned John Curry to paint a mural for the university's law library. The mural's theme, titled 'Freeing of the Slaves', was based on a previously rejected proposal that the United States justice department had deemed too controversial. Canvas measures 18 x 24 with a framed size of 23.75 x 29.75 inches. John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) The Clown 1935 The portrait of a Ringling Brothers clown is signed lower right and titled verso by a gallery label from Walker Galleries, New York. As a painter of the American Scene in the 1930s, John Steuart Curry was to Kansas what Benton was to Missouri and Grant Wood to Iowa. Seeking new inspiration, Curry embedded himself with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for approximately 10 weeks in early 1932 as it embarked on its spring tour through New England. On this tour, Curry immersed himself in circus life, creating a number of sketches and studies that would serve as the foundation for several significant paintings and lithographs, In April of 1933, Curry held an exhibition of his circus paintings at Ferargil Galleries in New York, coinciding with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus opening its spring season at Madison Square Garden. Board measures 16 x 12 with a framed size of 24.5 x 20.5 inches. Kansas native John Steuart Curry is regarded as one of the three figureheads of Regionalist art, alongside his contemporaries Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood. His works are held in numerous American institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Tragic Prelude, his mural for the Kansas State Capitol, stands as one of the most iconic images of Midwestern art.
