Elected to the Society of Scottish Artists in 1906, it was a highlight of their Annual Exhibition, held in the Royal Scottish Academy Galleries in 1913-14. This was a landmark exhibition of international modern and contemporary art in Scotland, including – thanks to loans negotiated by Cursiter – works by the Italian Futurists Luigi Russolo and Gino Severini. The Mirror was also shown in the company of Post-Impressionists including Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Paul Sérusier and Vincent Van Gogh, as well as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, as the society’s Hanging Committee successfully brought examples of the best in modern European art to an Edinburgh audience. Painted on an ambitious scale, The Mirror is a tour de force full-length female nude, combined with reflection and an accomplished still-life passage. Cursiter’s sitter addresses the viewer via the titular mirror, whilst the double views of her face and watch provide focal points in the composition. A feathery technique can be compared to that of the Scottish Colourist F. C. B. Cadell’s work of the period, with careful attention played to the rounding of form and associated shadows.Of the 461 exhibits, The Mirror was singled out for praise in several reviews, including that of The Studio. Its anonymous critic declared ‘Mr Stanley Cursiter’s The Mirror…was one of the most outstanding works of the collection, particularly in the modelling of the head and the upper part of the figure.’ (‘Studio-Talk: Edinburgh’, The Studio, vo.61, 1914, p.66) Meanwhile, The Edinburgh Evening News review stated:“In the first gallery two outstanding figure subjects are Mr F. C. B. Cadell's Fancy Dress and Mr Cursitor's The Mirror. Both these artists are young men, and both are impregnated with the modern spirit…Mr Cursitor's picture of a nude female figure seated on a chair covered with white material has many excellent points…the head is a charming bit of work.” (‘The Scottish Artists’ Society Exhibition', Edinburgh Evening News, 12 December 1913)The Scotsman critic continued, stating “Mr Stanley Cursiter, one of the younger artists, may be complimented on the step forward he has taken in his art. He has never before been so strongly represented in any exhibition as he is here…he will surprise his friends by his life-size study of the nude, with mirror reflection, in which…the colour has power and vitality.” ('The Society of Scottish Artists’ Exhibition', The Scotsman, 13 December 1913)Only a few months after the Society exhibition ended the First World War began and Cursiter joined the 1st Battalion of the Scottish Rifles (Cameronians). He went on to become Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, Secretary of the Royal Scottish Academy and The King’s (and later The Queen’s) Painter and Limner in Scotland.

Note updated 19 September 2024: Cursiter’s devotion to his native Orkney endured throughout his life. In his 1974 autobiography Looking Back, he recalled: ‘My practice was to work as hard as I could [during his early years in Edinburgh] over the winter months so as to make as much money as possible. Then, in the summer, I would go to Orkney, or Shetland, for two or three months, or for as long as the money lasted. There I would paint landscapes, sea-scapes, or cliff scenes.’ This work is believed to date to the year following Cursiter’s resignation from an 18 year tenure as Director of the National Galleries of Scotland. By this time the artist and his wife had acquired a house in Orkney where they would sojourn to paint the island’s dramatic coastal cliffs. This superb oil depicts fishermen at work under the cliffs of Rousay, a small island around 3km north of the Orkney mainland. Cursiter made a near-identical watercolour of the same composition, which is illustrated on page 82 of Pamela Beasant’s illustrated biography Stanley Cursiter: A Life of the Artist (Orkney Islands Council, 2007).

Built about 5000 years ago - earlier than the pyramids of Egypt and the legendary golden age of China - it is a remarkable mixture of simplicity and sophistication, its survival due to the quality of its building stone. The tumulus is 92 feet in diameter, 36 feet high and about 300 feet in circumference at the base. Inside the tomb the entrance passage and chambers are constructed of stone slabs weighing up to 30 tonnes. The tomb was designed to be closed up. However, those who built Maes Howe were well aware of the seasonal movements of the sun. The passage points roughly to midwinter sunset and in the evenings around the shortest day of the year the sun shines into the chamber. Long after it was abandoned as a burial place, Maes Howe was broken into by Norsemen and Viking crusaders in the mid 12th century AD. They carved a considerable number of runic inscriptions on the large stones of the main chamber. After the depredation, or perhaps during it, the top of the mound collapsed filling the chamber with earth and stones. Its true nature was not revealed until it was excavated in 1861 by J Farrer, who published in 1862 an excellent account of his findings.

In 1910 when he was a student at the Edinburgh College of Art he already had an apartment on 28 Queen Street, one of the most prestigious addresses in the city. Whilst the literature often erroneously claims that his first interior scenes were painted only after WWI, the present work dated 1912 is, alongside his “Twilight” from 1914 (in the National Gallery of Scotland), the best example that he had already begun painting these successful motifs in his early phase. This large-format work can be placed among his “dolce far niente” series, dedicated to depicting the “sweetness of doing nothing” with the highest artistic finesse. In this work, Cursiter places particular emphasis on the depiction of the various fabrics and surfaces. He envelopes the young lady's slender form in thin pleats of soft pale silk fabric as she lies upon her chaise lounge gazing out towards the beholder. With masterful and confident brushstrokes, Cursiter depicts the play of light and shadow upon the folds and pleats of the material to naturalistically evoke its texture and structure. The lady's golden shoes seem to stand out particularly within the depiction, with the sole of her right foot accentuated by the pale light. The young woman wears a black ribbon around her head and rests her left temple lightly upon the extravagant feather fan as she looks towards her portraitist. The room's interior décor is dominated by the Japanese taste, which was as popular then as it is now. The artist depicts the light falling upon the glaze of the oval porcelain plaque with delicate coloured accents. Every detail of the cushion has been drawn out by his brush. Like all of Cursiter's interior scenes, this large canvas captures a moment of calm and reflection in a refined atmosphere.
