  • Jacques d'Arthois (Brussels 1613 – 1686) - Forest Landscape with Tobias and the Angel
    Sep. 14, 2026

Jacques d'Arthois (Brussels 1613 – 1686) - Forest Landscape with Tobias and the Angel

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

This imposing canvas (81.3 x 104 cm) by the celebrated Flemish painter Jacques d'Arthois stands as a prime example of Baroque landscape painting and is officially published in the exhibition catalog of the Barockmuseum Oberaudorf("Faszination – Sehnsucht – Entdeckung – Europäische Landschaftsmalerei im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert"). Born in Brussels in 1613, d'Arthois began his artistic training before the age of twelve as an apprentice under an unknown painter named Jan Mertens. His professional trajectory was remarkably swift; he officially attained master status and was admitted into the prestigious Guild of Saint Luke on May 3, 1634, at the young age of twenty-one. Widely sought after by contemporaries, his commercial success during his lifetime enabled him to acquire several properties across Brussels. The primary source of inspiration for his lush woodland scenes was the Soignes Forest (Soigneser Wald), located southwest of Brussels. D'Arthois established his reputation by specializing in densely wooded landscapes structured through dramatic plays of light and shadow, frequently featuring a textured, sandy foreground. Stylistically, his vibrant color palette and rapid, energetic brushwork reveal a profound and direct influence from the master of Flanders, Peter Paul Rubens. Analyzing the structural composition of this piece, the right side is dominated by a dense forest stand rendered in intense green-blue hues. This heavy arboreal mass serves the compositional purpose of opening up a breathtaking spatial depth toward a brilliantly luminous sky, where warm yellow tones merge with cool blue shades. The foreground terrain runs along a diagonal path, warmly illuminated at the front by incoming light in yellow-ochre shades. Oil on canvas, 81.3 x 104 cm

  • Jacques d'Arthois, Landscape with a Stream and a Fisherman
    May. 21, 2026

Jacques d'Arthois, Landscape with a Stream and a Fisherman

    Est: €7,000 - €9,000

Signed lower right: Jacques d Arthois Certificate Dr. Walther Bernt, Munich, 4.11.1962. The Brussels based painter Jacques d’Arthois preferred large formats. For example, he painted five monumental works measuring 3.5 by 3 metres for the Royal Palace in Granada. While the present painting does not reach those dimensions, it nonetheless demonstrates the artist’s preference for grandeur. Arthois painted exclusively landscapes, and our picture shows one of his characteristic woodland views, likely inspired by the forest of Soignies, located south of Brussels. The staffage is focused on two figures at the left edge of the painting: a fisherman and a man standing on a bridge. The scene becomes more dramatic at the right edge, where a strikingly broken tree trunk dominates the foreground.

Attributed to ARTHOIS, Jacques d' - Tree trunk in a wooded landscape.

    Est: €400 - €500

Drawing, charcoal heightened with white, 21,1 x 24,6 cm, blue paper, unsigned (sm. tear at lower left corner, possibly trimmed). - A vivid landscape drawing, attributed to Jacques d’Arthois (1613-1686). He belonged to a group of Flemish landscape artists active in the surroundings of Brussels around the middle of the seventeenth century. His work shows a strong resemblance to that of his presumed teacher, Lodewijk de Vadder (1605-1655) and his prolific contemporary Lucas Achtschellink. D'Artois soon developed into a very successful landscape painter, setting the trend in Brussels for the second half of the 17th century. He gained special fame with the very large landscapes that were just beginning to become acceptable for the decoration of churches, abbeys etc. He stayed in Brussels until his death. He is known for his woodland compositions in charcoal and black chalk, often drawn in and around the Brussels Sonian forest (forêt de Soignes). - Ref. M. Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Signed lower left. Oil on canvas. 79 x 111.5 cm. Relined. Restored. Minor damage to frame. Jacques d'Arthois exclusively worked on landscape paintings, which he partly animated with religious and mythological figures. Mainly his landscapes were decorated with profane figures. As a landscape painter d'Arthois had an important position among Brussels' artists. Stylistically there is an evident influence of his famous predecessor Denis van Alsloot, also in the choice of landscape motifs - preferably from the forest of Soignies, south of Brussels - the works of both artists are connected. Winter landscapes are only occasionally found in the oeuvre of Jacques d'Arthois and are therefore a rarity for collectors. Provenance: according to the information given by the previous owners it was a gift from Consul Otto Bernheimer (1877-1960), Munich, to the family. - Private owner, South Germany.
