Bereits während des Wiener Kongresses 1814/15 avancierte Daffinger zu einem gefragten Porträtisten, der von den dort Anwesenden zahlreiche Aufträge erhielt. In den folgenden Jahren schuf er als Miniaturmaler des Kaiserhauses, des Adels und des gehobenen Bürgertums eine große Anzahl an Bildnissen. Seine Miniaturen zeichnen sich besonders durch die Wirklichkeitsnähe sowie durch ihre Feinheit in der Ausführung aus. Zu Daffingers wichtigsten Förderern zählten Fürst Metternich und dessen Frau Melanie von Metternich. Ab 1812 war Daffinger als Porträtist des Fürsten und ab 1836, dem Zenit seines Schaffens, als Hauptmeister der Porträtsammlung der Fürstin tätig. Sollte die im Auktionskatalog von 1950 angegebene Identifikation des Dargestellten zutreffen, handelt es sich um den belgischen Diplomaten Alphonse O'Sullivan de Grass de Séovaud (1798 Brüssel - 1866 Wien). Nach diplomatischen Missionen im Dienste der Niederlande in Berlin und St. Petersburg demissionierte er in Folge der Abspaltung Belgiens von den Niederlanden. In belgischem Dienst wurde er im Dezember 1833 chargé d'affaires in Wien, wo er die diplomatischen Beziehungen zwischen dem jungen belgischen Königreich und der Donaumonarchie förderte. In Wien heiratete er 1834 Franziska Schwartz von Mohrenstern. Seine Wiener Karriere wurde 1838 unterbrochen durch eine Mission in belgischem Dienst in Konstantinopel, wo er vom Sultan einen Handelsvertrag und freundschaftliche Beziehungen erlangte. Im gleichen Jahr wurde er zum Baron ernannt und 1845 folgte die Erhebung in den Grafenstand. Nur wenige Wochen nach seiner Bestätigung als Diplomat durch den neuen König der Belgier, Leopold II., starb er in Wien. - Provenienz: Wohl Wien Hietzing, Besitz der Hofschauspielerin und Kaiserfreundin Katharina Schratt (1853 - 1940). Size overall: 4 5/8 in. x 3 7/8 in. Moritz Michael Daffinger was an Austrian artist, best known for his miniature portraits. Born on January 25, 1790 in Lichtental, Austria, Daffinger was involved in the arts at a young age, being the son of a local porcelain painter Johann Daffinger. He quickly became a young apprentice in 1801, before leaving to study painting with Fredrich Heinrich Fger at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. From 1809 until his death of cholera in Vienna on August 21, 1849, he painted miniature paintings, usually of Austrian aristocracy - although his later years saw Daffinger shift to floral still life's - which brought him substantial recognition and honor, including his portrait being featured on the obverse side of the Austrian 20-schilling until 1999. HxW: 22.5/17.5 cm (34/28.5 cm with frame). Slight signs of age. A 20 shilling note depicting the artist in portrait is enclosed with the painting alongside the expertise. The attribution is based on an enclosed expertise by the art historian and author Heinrich Decker.

MORITZ DAFFINGER (Lichtental, 1790 - Vienna, 1849). "Portrait of a Gentleman." Miniature signed. Measurements: 8,5 x 6,5 cm; 14 x 11,5 cm (frame). Austrian miniaturist and sculptor, Mortiz Daffinger trained as a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. At the academy, he was a pupil of Heinrich Füger. From 1809 he painted only portraits, specializing in miniatures on ivory. In 1802 he was hired as a portrait painter by Prince Metternich, Austrian foreign minister, and became the curator of the extensive collection of portraits and miniatures of Princess Melanie. His style is influenced by Jean-Baptiste Isabey and especially by the English painter Thomas Lawrence, who visited Vienna in 1819. In his later years, Daffinger concentrated on painting flowers.
