Für Dahmen war Kunst stets Ausdruck eines existenziellen Ringens - eines Konflikts, den er mit grosser Ernsthaftigkeit austrug. Seine Werke zeugen häufig von einer inneren Zerrissenheit, die mit der vom Bergbau geprägten, von Brüchen und Veränderungen gekennzeichneten Landschaft seiner Heimat in einen bildnerischen Dialog tritt. Seit Mitte der 1960er-Jahre entwickelte Dahmen seine charakteristischen Materialbilder. In strukturierten Bildflächen, die von Zeichen, Ritzungen und reliefartigen Spuren durchzogen sind, integrierte er gefundene Materialien. Das vorliegende Werk ist ein charakteristisches Beispiel für diese künstlerische Entwicklung. The painter and object artist Karl Fred Dahmen is among the most important representatives of Informal Art in Germany. Together with Emil Schumacher and Gerhard Hoehme, he shaped this abstract art movement of the European postwar era. For Dahmen, art was always an expression of existential struggle—a conflict that he carried out with great seriousness. His works often bear witness to an inner turmoil, which enters into a visual dialogue with the mining-influenced, fractured, and ever-changing landscape of his homeland. Since the mid-1960s, Dahmen developed his characteristic material paintings. In structured picture surfaces, traversed by signs, incisions, and relief-like traces, he integrated found materials. The present work is a characteristic example of this artistic development. Für seine sogenannten "Furchenbilder" verwendete er häufig Sand, Bimsmehl - ein poröses, fein gemahlenes Vulkangestein - sowie Pigmente. Prägend sind die reduzierten, minimalistischen Strukturen, die an Risse, Ackerfurchen oder skriptartige Zeichen erinnern. Diese Formen verfolgen jedoch keine realistische Darstellung, sondern fungieren als Ausdruck einer inneren Bildsprache. Sie reflektieren zum einen Dahmens Verarbeitung seiner Reiseeindrücke, insbesondere seiner Aufenthalte in Kalifornien. Zum anderen verweisen sie auf seine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Existenz, die sich in einer konsequenten Reduktion der künstlerischen Mittel und einer Konzentration auf das Wesentliche manifestiert. The late work of the German artist Karl Fred Dahmen is characterized by structured, sometimes slightly relief-like surfaces. For his so-called "Furchenbilder" (furrow paintings), he often used sand, pumice powder—a porous, finely ground volcanic rock—as well as pigments. Defining are the reduced, minimalist structures that recall cracks, furrows in fields, or script-like signs. However, these forms do not pursue a realistic depiction, but rather serve as an expression of an internal visual language. On the one hand, they reflect Dahmen's processing of his travel impressions, especially his stays in California. On the other hand, they point to his intense engagement with his own existence, which manifests itself in a consistent reduction of artistic means and a concentration on the essential.     (1917 Stolberg - 1981 Preinersdorf) "Die Bojarden". Originaltitel Die 1962 entstandene Collage Dahmens, besteht aus Noten mit Liedtexten, in denen Bojarden (Großgrundbesitzer) Erwähnung finden. Dahmen zählt zu den bedeutenden deutschen Vertretern abstrakter Kunst nach 1945, insbesondere dem Informel und Tachismus. 1958 nahm Dahmen an der "documenta II" in Kassel teil. Seit Mitte der 1960er Jahre integrierte Dahmen zunehmend verschiedene Gegenstände in seine Bilder; es entstanden Materialbilder und Objektkästen, mit denen er ähnliche Ziele wie die "Nouveaux Réalistes" verfolgte.     Ohne Titel Öl und Sand auf Leinwand. 1962. 49 x 36 cm. Unten rechts mit Pinsel in Schwarz signiert "Dahmen", verso nochmals signiert "K.F. Dahmen" und datiert sowie mit Richtungspfeil. Weber 043.62 - B 0207i. Charakteristische Arbeit von dreidimensionaler Gestaltung. Dahmen ist einer der frühesten und bedeutendsten Vertreter des Informel in Deutschland. "Als wäre der Künstler Archäologe, werden Schichten freigelegt und von der Materie wieder verschüttet, insulare Setzungen schaffend und die Farbe den Bildkörper als atmende Haut überziehend. Kruste und scheinbar erstarrte Farblava verweisen in den informellen Kompositionen auf ihren Anlaß zurück. Das Bild ist künstlerische und künstliche Landschaft zugleich. In tonalen oder monochromen Differenzierungen verweigert der Maler dem Bild jede Heftigkeit der Farbe, um Struktur und sie gliedernde Ordnungen als kompositorische Setzungen stärker zu betonen. (...) Bis 1964 entwickelte Dahmen diese oberflächenbetonte, strukturreiche, formassoziative Malerei, um ihr dann mehr und mehr Objektcharakter zu verleihen und das Bild schließlich ganz zu verdinglichen."
