Who is Jay Norwood Darling?
Jay Norwood Darling (October 21, 1876 – February 12, 1962), better known as Ding Darling, was an American cartoonist who won two Pulitzer Prizes.

Darling was born in Norwood, Michigan, where his parents, Marcellus and Clara, had recently moved so that Marcellus could begin work as a minister. In 1886, the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa. Darling began college in 1894 at Yankton College in South Dakota and moved to Beloit College in Wisconsin the following year. There he became art editor of the yearbook and began signing his work with a contraction of his last name, D'ing, a nickname that stuck.

Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling (1876-1962)

Lot 140: Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling (1876-1962)

Auction Date: Jul 22, 2010

Estimate: $10,000 - $20,000

Description: Mallards-Jay Norwood Darling was born in Norwood, Michigan in 1876. He rose to prominence as a nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist based in Iowa, winning two Pulitzer Prizes for his work in 1924 and 1942. His efforts supporting conservation were equally impressive, and he was appointed the director of the U.S. Biological Survey by Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1934-1935. During this time he initiated the Federal Duck Stamp program and designed the first stamp, which was used as a hunting license. The proceeds then, as now, support the National Wildlife Refuge System. Darling designed its Blue Goose logo, and the "Ding" Darling NWR on Sanibel Island, Florida is named after him. He also founded the National Wildlife Federation in 1936, which brought conservationists together to form a more powerful voice. He created a number of etchings which he gave away to friends, and always wanted to spend time "painting outdoor scenes and particularly hunting pictures," though he rarely found the time. Upon his retirement from the cartooning profession, Darling had more time to create watercolors, oils, and sculpture. The complete collection of his political cartoons and archives is found in the University of Iowa Library....
