Honoré Daumier Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer, Sculptor, Caricaturist, Illustrator, b. 1808 - d. 1879

Honore Daumier was a French artist known for his satirical caricatures. Born in Marseilles to artist parents, he moved to Paris early in his childhood and studied under Alexandre Lenoir. Drawings by Honore Daumier show him as a multitalented, trailblazing artist, who beyond his caricatures created various forms of realism art, sculptures, and graphic art. Daumier lithograph prints were often political in nature.

Because of their sharp focus on current affairs, Daumier prints were controversial, particularly his caricature of King Louis-Phillipe, which got him imprisoned in 1832. Daumier's prints were often comments on the government, the upper class, and society in general. Balzac noted that Daumier had a bit of Michelangelo under his skin, and that Honore Daumier's artwork was well ahead of the times. Buy lithographs at auction and online to round out your Victorian art collection.

Paris : Aubert, [1836-1838]. Provenance : Sam Josefowitz, Pully – puis par descendance aux propriétaires actuels A beautiful set of 100 original Daumier lithographs, in contemporary half-binding, depicting the titular "Robert Macaire", a typical and comical crook.

According to Wasserman, French painter Sam Szafran (1934-2019) purchased the unbaked clay model for this casting in 1963 at a Parisian antique fair, the annual Foire à la Ferraille. The clay head was sold to the American collector Joseph H. Hirshhorn, who commissioned the Parisian-New York gallerist Pierre Matisse to have a bronze edition cast by Valsuani foundry. The artist's initials in the Valsuani cast were not present in the clay model, but were added in the wax model before casting.

Vivienne. | Lith. Destouches 28 r Paradis Pre Paris.". Date: 1860 Description: The artwork shows a scene with grotesquely designed figures depicted as patrols. They are wearing lanterns and their facial features and movements appear to be exaggerated in order to convey a certain humour. Their physiognomy and costumes suggest a stylised, caricaturistic depiction. The composition is dynamic, the figures seem to move slowly and with a certain urgency. The picture depicts a historical scene in which an old, helmeted warrior in ancient armour is shown. He is leaning on a walking stick and dramatically pointing towards a military camp in the distance. Interestingly, the soldiers in the camp are busy fishing instead of preparing for battle. The scene is designed in the style of a bas-relief and contains curved lines that create a dynamic composition. The emotional gestures of the warrior stand in stark contrast to the angler's leisurely resting posture.
