From original "In our Time" exhibition set. Magnum's exhibition blindstamp in the margin at lower right, signed in pencil on the reverse. LITERATURE Bruce Davidson, The Clown, in: Esquire, vol. 53, no. 1, January 1960, p. 71; William Manchester (ed.), In our Time. The world as seen by Magnum photographers, London 1989, p. 394; Sam Holmes/Bruce Davidson (ed.), Circus, Göttingen 2007; Bruce Davidson, Outside – Inside, Vol. I: 1954-1961, Göttingen 2009, p. 58. At the time of his first Magnum assignments, Bruce Davidson spent several weeks with the circus troupe Clyde Beatty, named after its main performer, a big cat tamer. Davidson's main focus was less on the glamour of spectacular performances and more on the strenuous everyday life of the individual artists outside the ring. He developed a close bond with the diminutive clown Jimmy Armstrong, whose loneliness and strength of character particularly impressed him. Among the many photographs with Armstrong as the protagonist, this is the best known. It shows the clown smoking at the empty forecourt of the tent, whose striped pattern forms the compositional counterpart to his contrasting costume and make-up. The shot not only gives a dense image of the dreary atmosphere, but also gives Jimmy Armstrong a stage that makes him appear in dignified grandeur. *Item is fully Taxed Deutsch: Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet 1989 auf halbmattem "double-weight" Papier 60,6 x 50,6 cm, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. *Vollbesteuert.

Bruce Davidson (b.1933) Bruce Davidson (b.1933) GIRL HOLDING KITTEN ON LONDON STREET, 1960. Iris print, printed later, image size 500 X 340mm, signed and numbered 13/200 by the photographer in pencil in lower right margin. Mounted and framed, frame size 935 x 765mm. In an interview with The Royal Photographic Society Journal in 2021, American photographer Bruce Davidson shared the story behind one of his most famous photographs taken in the UK, which he made in 1960. At that point, the young photographer was touring around England in a Hillman Minx convertible when he happened on this young girl and her sister in London. Davidson told Rachel Segal Hamilton, “Her name was Carol, and I didn’t really talk to her much at the time but a few months ago her sister Christine, who appears with her in another image from the same set, got in touch with my studio,” he explains. “Some people who see the picture assume Carol is a runaway because she’s carrying a sleeping bag, but she and her sister had been hitchhiking around the Lake District, winding up in London for a concert." Provenance Eyestorm Media Ltd.

Photographer’s agency stamp and handwritten negative no. “60-22-104/43” on the reverse Davidson had already become a member of the renowned Magnum agency as a young photographer. After completing his legendary series in the confined milieus of an American travelling circus, a teenage gang in Brooklyn and on the set of “The Misfits”, he travelled England and Scotland for several months. In addition to poetic landscapes and atmospheric street photographs, he also took pictures that radiate a light-hearted cheerfulness. In Regent’s Park, Davidson observed playing children and remembered his experiences of nature as a young boy. Deutsch: Vintage-Silbergelatineabzug, "double-weight" halbmattes Papier, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand.
