Head and Shoulders portrait, probably of an unidentified British officer, 1944, oil on canvas, initialled and dated lower right, inscribed from the artist as P.O.W. at Oflag VII/B, Germany to his wife Mrs [Nina] Davidson-Houston, Esher, Surrey, to verso, 33 x 25cm Qty: (1) Footnote: Major Aubrey Davidson-Houston was a soldier and artist. Born in Dublin, educated at St Edward's School, Oxford, and trained at Sandhurst. he was commissioned into the Royal Sussex Regiment. His war was brief, being captured covering the retreat to Dunkirk in 1940. He was moved from camp to camp and eventually transferred to Oflag VII/B. Having made one unsuccessful escape attempt, his captors being persuaded there's nothing subversive about sending drawings of prisoners home to their families, he spent the next five years painting his 700 fellow inmates. After the war, he secure a place at Slade School of Fine Art, and in 1953 he had his one and only 1-man exhibition at Walker's Gallery in Bond Street, London. As a result, he received a commission to paint the Queen, and his career as a portrait painter began. His other royal commissions included the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen Mother, and the Duchess of Kent.
