      Jan. 27, 2024

Julian O. Davidson O/C, The Burning of the USS Congress, 1892

      Est: $7,000 - $8,000

Julian Oliver Davidson (New York, 1853-1894) oil on canvas laid to Masonite painting depicting the burning of the USS Congress at Hampton Roads on March 8, 1862, following shelling by the USS Virginia (visible in the distance at center right). Sailors abandon the burning ship and swim or try to remain afloat in the foreground. Signed and dated "J.O. Davidson 92," lower left. Housed in an ornate giltwood frame with brass nameplate. Sight: 58 1/2" H x 34 7/8" W. Frame: 69" H x 45" W. Literature: This painting along with a watercolor and photogravure of the same theme, is listed as number 5 in the general inventory of the estate of the artist as recorded by the Rockland County, NY Surrogate's Office and included in the supplementary material in Lynn S. Beman's exhibition catalogue Julian O. Davidson 1853-1894: American Marine Artist, p. 61 (New York: Historical Society of Rockland County, 1986). Note: The USS Congress, along with a fleet of Union ships, was attacked in 1862 by the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimac and persistently mid-identified as such). This conflict, known as the Battle of Hampton Roads, resulted in the destruction of the USS Congress. Later, the Union ironclad USS Monitor would arrive and the ensuing battle--the first between this class of armored warships--would significantly impact the course of naval warfare.

      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Julian Oliver Davidson (American/New York, 1853-1894), "Monitor and Merrimac: First Fight Between Ironclads", 1885, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, titled, dated, inscribed and "F.W. Devoe & Co." canvas stamp en verso, 15 in. x 21 1/2 in., framed; together with chromolithograph of same by L. Prang & Company, Boston, copyright 1886, sight 15 in. x 21 1/2 in., framed. (2 pcs.) Note: Julian Davidson developed an interest in ships from a young age, traveling often to Cuba where his father’s engineering firm was constructing the Havana railroad. His earliest sketches of nautical subjects began during his apprenticeship with his father at the age of sixteen, and by age seventeen, Davidson joined the crew of the steamship Arizona. He later studied art in New York with Mauritz de Hass, expanding his repertoire to include historic battle scenes. Davidson quickly became known as one of America’s leading marine painters and Harper’s magazine printed many of his illustrations. Well-known publishers, including Louis Prang, were aware of Davidson’s talent and appeal, and they commissioned him to paint original works of which they produced popular limited editions lithographs. The two original oils offered here were part of this commission, each lot including the corresponding lithograph printed by Prang. The two scenes are depictions of well-known Civil War battles: one representing the capture of New Orleans by Admiral David Farragut’s fleet, and the other portraying the first naval battle between two ironclad warships, the Monitor and the Merrimack. Each painting is rendered in fine detail, displaying Davidson’s historical knowledge and technical skill at producing maritime battle paintings.
