Sold at Auction: S. Scott Davis III

S. Scott Davis III is a multi-media artist who has been working in the San Francisco Bay Area since the 1970s. Davis works in drawing, collage and sculpture, rearranging detritus from the streets into enigmatic forms that hint at meaning but refrain from becoming literal. His collages and objects come out of the dada, surrealist and beat assemblage tradition but look like archeological objects seen from the future when he situates them in clear plexiglass boxes. Davis is a cousin of jazz legend Charlie Mingus. When he was younger he designed flyers for jazz shows and made live drawings of jazz artists while they were performing. This lot comes with a 1992 catalogue from his exhibition at the Robert Else Gallery at California State University, Sacramento, curated by the artist Dewey Crumpler.
