        Jul. 18, 2023

        Threepenny Opera. 1976.

        Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: PAUL DAVIS (1938- ) SIZE: 42 1/4 x 84 in./107.8 x 213.4 cm DESCRIPTION: Davis masterfully depicts the late Puerto Rican actor, Raúl Juliá, as the seductive and evil Mack the Knife for the Public Theater’s production of The Threepenny Opera, the revolutionary musical theater piece by German dramatist Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill. Adapted from an 18th century English ballad opera, The Beggar's Opera, it offers a cutting socialist critique of the capitalist world. This particular production of the play was performed at New York’s Lincoln Center. This is the larger, two-sheet poster. (Contemporary; Theatre; American; New York)

The Spirit of Che / Evergreen. 1968.

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: PAUL DAVIS (1938- ) SIZE: 29 1/2 x 44 1/2 in./75 x 113 cm DESCRIPTION: Drawing his inspiration from the famous Alberto Korda photograph known as "Guerrillero Heroico,” which has been called a symbol of the Twentieth Century and the world’s most famous photo, Davis brings the iconic image of Che Guevara into the public eye to advertise the February issue of the politically progressive periodical the Evergreen Review. This poster was the first time a United States-based audience had been exposed to this image of Che. The response was intense: hundreds of copies of this poster were defaced in subways and elsewhere. And this image stirred such strong emotions that a bomb was thrown into the Evergreen offices. (Modern; Literary; American)

DAVIS, Paul (b. 1938), designer. The Spirit of Che lives in the new Evergreen!

        Est: $150 - $250

[GUEVARA, Che (1928–1967)]. DAVIS, Paul (b. 1938), designer. The Spirit of Che lives in the new Evergreen! Circa 1960s. Lithograph in colors (44 ½ x 30”). “After his death in October of 1967, the Evergreen Review – a leftist journal based in NYC – hired the designer Paul Davis to create both this poster and the cover of their February 1968 magazine as a tribute to the Revolutionary. While Davis had seen the now iconic photo of Che by Alberto Korda, American audiences had not yet been exposed en masse to the image, making this the first time the US public would see Che in this saint-like pose. After being plastered on walls around the city, many of the posters were defaced. On July 26, 1968, the offices of Grove Press – publisher of the Evergreen Review – at 64 University Place were bombed with a grenade by anti-Castro Cubans in retaliation for Davis’s design” (Poster House). Linen backed. Several professional repairs including a vertical closed tear to image. B.

        For Colored Girls. 1976.

        Est: $800 - $1,000

ARTIST: PAUL DAVIS (1938- ) SIZE: 41 5/8 x 82 3/4 in./105.6 x 210.2 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Born in Oklahoma, Davis attended New York’s School of Visual Arts and was an early member of Push Pin Studios. Since the 1960s, his illustrations and graphic designs have appeared in countless magazine pages and covers, as well as on book jackets, record covers, and film posters. After opening his own graphic design studio, he began creating the images for which he is perhaps best known: Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival and The Public Theater. Davis’ strength as a posterist lies in his powerful, often idealized portraiture. His talents are spectacularly on display in this poster for the play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, which uses the forceful image of Ntozake Shange, the work’s playwright, for her presentation at the New York Shakespeare Festival. Set against a background of a tiled subway station that’s been graffitied with colorful lettering, this larger two-sheet format of the design makes quite an impression.
