    Alfred Dawson, attr., Englische Flusslandschaft an einem leicht bewölktem Sommertag ein ruhiger Fluss, mit zum Teil bewaldetem Ufer in bergiger Landschaft, auf dem Wasser ein Ruderboot mit Personen, auf der Wiese am rechten Ufer grasende Rinder, mit feinem Pinselstrich eingefangene Landschaftsmalerei, effektvoll gesetzte Spiegelungen der Bäume im Wasser, mit sicherer Hand zum Teil mit spitzem Pinsel getupftes Blattwerk, Öl auf Leinwand, Ende 19. Jh., rechts unten signiert "A. DAWSON", dazu schwer leserlich datiert oder ortsannotiert, rückseitig auf dem Rahmen auf Etikett maschinenschriftlich künstlerbezeichnet, diverse unleserliche Annotationen in Blei, auf Keilrahmen alter Preisvermerk "2400", Retuschen, Leinwand später auf neueren Keilrahmen umgeschlagen, Impressionistenrahmen jüngeren Datums, Falzmaße ca. 27,5 x 46 cm. Künstlerinfo: engl. Landschaftsmaler, Radierer und Holzschneider (1843 bis 1931 England), Sohn des Malers Henry Dawson (1811–1878), stellte 1860–89 in der Londoner Royal Academy, in Suffolk Street und in der British Institution aus, Fokus auf Landschaften, Radierungen, Schabblätter (Portraits) und Holzschnitte, produzierte Holzschnitte und Radierungen zu C. DAWSON" lower right, also illegibly dated or annotated by location, typed artist's inscription on label on frame verso, various illegible annotations in lead, old price indication "2400" on stretcher, retouching, canvas later mounted on newer stretcher, Impressionist frame of more recent date, rebated dimensions approx. 27.5 x 46 cm. Artist information: English landscape painter, etcher and woodcutter (1843-1931 England), son of the painter Henry Dawson (1811-1878), exhibited 1860-89 at the Royal Academy in London, in Suffolk Street and at the British Institution, focussed on landscapes, etchings, mezzotints (portraits) and woodcuts, produced woodcuts and etchings for C. E.     twenty-five watercolours, mostly to rectos, but one or two on versos, and a few pencil sketches, some titled, dated, and signed or monogrammed, including 'Dartmouth', 'Teignmouth', 'Nr. Shaldon', 'Moonlight Dawlish', 'Berry Pomeroy [Castle]', 'Bolt Head', 'At Salcombe', 'Heene near Worthing', 'Brickyard at Arundel', and 'Sea at Dartmouth' with anotations by the artist regarding colour, composition, and form of the wave, album leaves 17.5 x 25cm (7 x 9.75ins), biro inscription on front pastedown, stitching partially broken, original cloth, with crude adhesive tape repair to spine, edges rubbed, oblong 8vo Alfred Dawson was taught to paint by his father, a marine and landscape artist, eventually establishing himself as a successful etcher and landscape artist in Chertsey, Surrey. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1860 and 1889, as well as at the Suffolk Street Gallery and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. In addition to his career as a landscape painter he produced illustrations for a number of books, including 'A Royal Warren, or Picturesque Rambles in the Isle of Purbeck' and 'A History of Dorset'. In later life he was frequently commissioned to produce etchings for 'The Portfolio'.
