        J. BOISSIEU (1736-1810), The Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, 1809, Etching

        Est: €900 - €1,200

Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (1736 Lyon - 1810 ibid.): The Temple of Vesta in Tivoli Ideal landscape, 1809, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Temple de la Sibylle Tiburtine à Tivoli. dessine et gravé à l'eau forte par J. J. De Boissieu 1809 à l'age de 73 ans.". Date: 1809 Description: The round Vesta Temple in Tivoli was already considered the epitome of antique harmony and architecture by classical travellers to Rome. By the middle of the 18th century at the latest, it was therefore one of the most famous ancient temples in the learned world. Not least due to its spectacular location on a rocky spur above a 120 metre waterfall, the temple became an important pilgrimage site for architects, artists and poets alike for decades. Boissieu, who travelled to Italy in the 1760s, aptly sketched the scenery around the famous circular temple. Surrounded by people measuring the columns with their hands or eyes and gazing in amazement at the completed capitals, the temple becomes the centre of attention of the entire composition. Even further away from the building, artists can be recognised who have taken out their drawing boards and are observing and sketching from various angles. It is hardly noticeable that Boissieu has transformed the actual topography of the site, with its rugged, steeply sloping rock face, into a tranquil river landscape with a waterfall cascading over a comparatively tame cliff edge. Together with the soft, warmly glowing stroke of the etching, this idyllic image of the artists around the famous ruin unites to form a lifelike ideal landscape in the Campagna Romana. Keywords: Temple, Tivoli, waterfall, cascade, ruin, graphic, etching, Italy, landscape, antiquity, idyll, longing for Italy, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Italy,

        Est: €900 - €1,200

Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (1736 Lyon - 1810 ebd.): The Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, 1809, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Temple de la Sibylle Tiburtine à Tivoli. dessine et gravé à l'eau forte par J. J. De Boissieu 1809 à l'age de 73 ans.". Date: 1809 Description: The round Vesta Temple of Tivoli was already considered the epitome of ancient harmony and architecture by the classicist travellers to Rome. By the middle of the 18th century at the latest, it was therefore one of the most famous ancient temples in the learned world. Not least because of its spectacular location, on a rocky spur above a waterfall plunging 120m into the depths, the temple became an important pilgrimage site for architects, artists and poets alike over the decades. How aptly Boissieu, who travelled to Italy in the 1760s, sketched the scenery around the famous round temple here. Swarmed by people measuring the columns with their hands or eyes and gazing in wonder at the completed capitals, the temple becomes the centre of attention of the entire composition. Even at a further distance from the building, artists can be seen who have taken out their drawing boards and begin to observe and sketch from various angles. It hardly matters then that Boissieu has transformed the actual topography of the site, with its craggy, steeply sloping rock face, into a tranquil river landscape with a waterfall cascading over a comparatively tame cliff edge. Together with the soft, warmly luminous stroke of the etching, this idyllic image of the artists around the famous ruin unites to create a lifelike ideal landscape in the Campagna Romana. |BO Keywords: Temple, Tivoli, Waterfall, Cascade, Ruin, Graphic, Etching, Italy, Countryside, 19th century, Romanticism, Landscape, Italy, Size: 40,9 cm x 55,0 cm (16,1 x 21,7 in), Plate: 31,5 cm x 41,0 cm (12,4 x 16,1 in), Depiction: 27,9 cm x 37,4 cm (11 x 14,7 in) Condition: Good condition. The sheet is heavily discoloured due to its age and spotted in places on the sheet margin. Clear liquid stain at lower left. The corners of the sheet are slightly bumped and creased. Several marginal tears along the lower edge of the sheet, two longer ones fixed with adhesive tape on the reverse side. Marginal tear also fixed in the upper centre. Somewhat bumped along the edges in places. The image makes a good, occasionally somewhat pale impression.

JEAN-JACQUES DE BOISSIEU (1736-1810) STUDY OF FIVE HEADS

        Est: -

Study of Five Heads is a beautiful black and white etching with drypoint interventions on paper, realized at the end of the XVIII century by the French artist Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon, 1736 - 1810). Signed on plate on the lower right margin “De Boissieu”. This old master’s original print with fresh impressions is in very good conditions, except for a usual yellowing of the paper above all on the edges, some spread signs of the passing of time, and a light foxing along the margins. Five studies of heads, of which two profiles (a female and a male), are beautifully sketched with the drypoint technique, allowing us to appreciate the incredible draftsmanship. Also the other three bigger portraits are very detailed and etched with a superb technique. Although the subjects are drawn in different scales and degrees of finish, each portrait has the dignity of a unique piece of art. In particular on the lower margin at the center, there is the portrait of "Le Père Cotrot, Garçon Teinturier à Lyon", an elderly man, toothless, with a large nose, slightly turned to the left, with a hat and an unbuttoned jacket over waistcoat. This very realistic portrait shows all his wrinkles. Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon, 1736 –1810) was a French artist who studied at the École de Dessin in Lyon, but he was mostly self-taught. His earliest prints were realized between 1758 and 1764. When he went to Italy in the retinue of the ambassador and Duc de la Rochefoucauld d’Enville, he had a lifechanging encounter: he met Voltaire and entered the world of luminaries, and had the opportunity of realizing some plates for Diderot-d’Alembert’s Encyclopèdie. He then continued to produce prints in Lyon: many etchings of the Roman and Dutch countryside, as well as the French countryside around Lyon, earning a reputation as the last representative exponent of the older etching tradition. 27.5 x 21.7 (foglio), 23.3 x 18.8 (image)

Study of Six Heads is a beautiful black and white etching with drypoint interventions on paper, realized at the end of the XVIII century by the French artist Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon, 1736 - 1810). Signed on plate on the lower right margin “De Boissieu”. The inscription of the plate number is on the higher right corner "10". This old master’s original print with lifetime impressions is in very good conditions, except for a usual yellowing of the paper especially on the edges and some signs of the passing of time. Nevertheless, the print has preserved its original beauty. Six studies of heads (four elder men, a middle-aged man at the center, and a woman with a turbant), etched with a superb technical skill and an incredible draftsmanship, are drawn in various dimensions and with different degrees of finish, deserving the dignity of six individual portraits all together. Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon, 1736 –1810) was a French artist who studied at the École de Dessin in Lyon, but he was mostly self-taught. His earliest prints were realized between 1758 and 1764. JEAN-JACQUES DE BOISSIEU (1736-1810) STUDY OF FIVE MALE PORTRAITS

        Est: -

Study of Five Male Portraits is a beautiful black and white etching with drypoint interventions on paper, realized at the end of the XVIII century by the French artist Jean-Jacques de Boissieu (Lyon, 1736 - 1810). Hand-signed on plate on the lower left margin "De Boissieu f.". This old master’s original print, with fresh impressions, rapid lines, and wide gradients of blacks, is in very good conditions, except for a usual yellowing of the paper on the edges, some signs of the passing of time, and a light foxing along the margins. The original beauty of this print was not affected by these small defects. Five studies of heads, three of which are male profiles. The two portraits at the top are slightly turned towards left. Each portrait represents an elderly man, toothless and with a big nose, that demonstrates the superb draftsmanship of the artist and the incredible realism of the print. Even though the subjects are drawn in different dimensions and degrees of finish, each portrait can be considered a unique art piece.
