            ARTIST: GEORGES DE FEURE (1868-1943) SIZE: 18 5/8 x 25 1/4 in./47.2 x 64.2 cm DESCRIPTION: This poster for the Belgian Journal of the Auctions was immediately seized upon by contemporary critics and hailed as one of the finest works of its kind. Years later, Jane Abdy had the last and best word on it: “de Feure’s finest poster, and one of the most beautiful of the whole period... It is a triumph of color and design. He uses only brown, green and the dull pink of roses. Yet every possible shade of brown is in the poster, and the effect is a great richness and concentration of colour, like a mountain of brushed up autumn leaves... She is dressed in the height of imaginative fashion, and her hat is a victory of the milliner’s art” (p. 156). This is the rare variant before the addition of text. (Art Nouveau)

Depiction of a young woman, apparently little dressed, with rich gold jewelry, necklace, tiara and a bracelet in the form of a snake, typical Art Nouveau elements. She is looking at an iris in her right hand, which she has taken from a vase. In the background are veiled women in a forest. Signed lower left: DE FEURE. Measures with frame ca. 83 x 68,5 cm. Good condition with signs of age and use, canvas with several light scratches. On stretcher frame embossed red wax seal. Painting is from the Art Nouveau period. Please inspect, without expertise. Provenance: from private collection Georges de Feure (real name Georges Joseph van Sluijters, * September 6, 1868 in Paris; † November 26, 1943 ibid) was a French painter of Art Nouveau, stage designer and industrial designer. He began his studies as one of eleven students at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, but soon abandoned his studies and went to Paris. He did not continue his studies and remained self-taught. His artistic activity was influenced by Jules Chéret and Siegfried Bing. At first he drew posters, then he painted symbolic compositions in the Baudelair style on the theme of women. Together with Eugène Gaillard and Edouard Colonna, he was chosen by Siegfried Bing, founder of the boutique "L'Art Nouveau", to design rooms in his pavilion at the World's Fair in Paris in 1900. Georges de Feure (1868 - 1943), zugeschrieben - Frau mit Iris Gouache auf Papier auf Leinwand in einem mit Goldfarbe bemalten Holzrahmen. Maße mit Rahmen ca. 83 x 68,5 cm. Guter Erhaltungszustand mit Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, Leinwand mit mehreren leichten Kratzern. Auf Keilrahmen geprägtes rotes Wachssiegiel. Gemälde ist aus der Jugendstil Zeit. Bitte besichtigen, ohne Expertise. Provenienz: aus Privatsammlung Georges de Feure (wirklicher Name Georges Joseph van Sluijters, * 6. September 1868 in Paris; † 26. November 1943 ebenda) war ein französischer Maler des Jugendstils, Bühnenbildner und Industriedesigner. Er begann sein Studium als einer der elf Studenten an der Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, brach aber bald das Studium ab und begab sich nach Paris. Er setzte das Studium nicht fort und blieb Autodidakt. Seine künstlerische Tätigkeit war von Jules Chéret und Siegfried Bing beeinflusst. Bourgerie, Paris DESCRIPTION: This unusual frontal view of the Maid of Orleans against an umber background was created to advertise a fabric store owned by Astre et Soux in Carcassone. Although some details of her armor are not fully rendered, this in no way detracts from the design’s enticing impact. “De Feure transforms the saint into a femme fatale: instead of a pure young girl whose armor annihilates all carnal thoughts, we are given a Joan of Arc that emphasizes all her feminine curves” (de Feure, p. 78) This is the rare proof before bottom lettering in two sheets.
