Cornelis de Heem, Still Life with Fruit and a Wine Glass

    Est: €200,000 - €250,000

Signed lower left: C DE HEEM f Cornelis de Heem was the talented son of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, arguably the most esteemed still-life painter of the 17th century. Born in Leiden in 1631, the younger de Heem grew up in Antwerp and spent the first seven years of his career there, after the family moved to the city in 1636. In 1667, he worked alongside his father in Utrecht. He was later documented in The Hague and returned to Antwerp in 1691. Cornelis’ earliest independently signed works date from 1654. In 1660/1661, he is recorded as a member of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. This impressive small still life can be counted among the finest works by the artist—an exquisite piece that fully justifies the longstanding admiration for the de Heem family. Dating to the late 1650s, this exceptionally well-preserved panel is an early example of Cornelis' fully developed personal style. The meticulous handling of paint and attention to detail inherited from his father are here combined with a compositional creativity and brilliant colour palette that lend his work its distinctive vibrancy and visual richness. The lavish composition is enlivened by the luminous triad of primary colours—red, yellow, and blue — seen in the gleaming red of the cherries and wine, the deep blue of the satin tablecloth, and the yellow of the lemon. De Heem renders the various fruits with great precision — above all, the showpiece of Dutch still-life painting: the spiralling lemon peel, which lends the composition a diagonal upward movement. The ripe fig at the centre is painted with such detail that every tiny seed is visible. In the golden and silver tassel to the left, each individual metallic thread shimmers softly in the light. This masterful still life is intended as a feast for the eyes, designed to impress the viewer through the naturalistic rendering of its objects. At the same time, it likely holds a deeper symbolic meaning. Wine and grapes are Christian symbols, and the wine — presented in an elegant glass in the façon de Venise style — is given particular prominence, possibly alluding to the Eucharist. The unripe strawberries hanging over the rim of the glass also serve as a symbol of Christ. Fred G. Meijer has examined the painting in person. He considers it an excellent, relatively early work from Cornelis de Heem’s œuvre, which he dates to the late 1650s.

Cornelis de Heem: Still Life with Grapes, Peaches and Apricots

    Est: €20,000 - €30,000

HEEM, CORNELIS DE 1631 Leiden - 1695 Antwerp Title: Still Life with Grapes, Peaches and Apricots. Date: Ca. 1660. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 37.5 x 26.5cm. Notation: Signed left on the table edge: "C. De Heem". Frame: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany; acquired from Richard Green Art Dealers, London, 7th July 1983; Sotheby's auction, London, 9th March 1983, lot 96. The painting is listed in the online database of the RKD, The Hague, fig. no. 466721. The name de Heem is familiar to all collectors of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, as well as to other art lovers. Behind this name lies not only Jan Davidsz. de Heem (ca. 1606 - 1683), but also the dynasty he founded, beginning with his talented son Cornelis, who successfully continued the family tradition until 1695. Cornelis de Heem's work mainly comprises small still lifes featuring fruit and delicacies, often accompanied by wine glasses, as well as floral motifs, mostly in the form of garlands or wreaths. Through masterful contrasts between the different surfaces and colours of the fruit - matt versus transparent or pale versus bright - the artist succeeds in achieving surprising three-dimensional effects in a small space. This can also be observed in the small painting offered here, which was created around 1660. Peaches, grapes and cherries are arranged in a pyramid-shaped composition that transitions from the warm tones of summer fruits to the cooler tones of autumn fruits. By juxtaposing fleshy surfaces, such as those of the peaches, with others that are more transparent and delicate, such as those of the cherries and grapes, de Heem offers the viewer a diverse mosaic in which each element is accentuated by its opposite. According to the latest research, a stylistic development can be seen in de Heem's works: in his early works, his still life compositions are relatively bright, with soft brushstrokes, while later he chose a darker atmosphere and the colours appear harder. The present painting, which was created around the middle of his artistic career, is a little gem in which the artist has not yet stiffened the colours and light effects. We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer, Amsterdam, who confirmed the attribution after examining the original painting. STILLLEBEN MIT FRÜCHTEN, AUSTERN UND EINEM RÖMISCHEN KELCH Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 78 x 65,5 cm. Provenienz: Christie's New York, 19.04.2018, Lot 154. Literatur: Luisa Ambrosio (Hrsg.), Un museo... tutto da bere. Arte e vino, Ausstellungskatalog, Museo Duca di Martina, 21. Relined 78 x 65.5 cm. Label by Christie's on reverse. According to the previous owner the authenticity of the painting was confirmed by Fred Meijer. The son of Jan Davidsz. de Heem – a key figure of 17th century Flemish still life painitng – Cornelis de Heem trained with his father and was a brilliant and worthy artistic successor. Cornelis largely adopted his father's repertoire and creative logic and in his best works he is definitely his father's equal in both technique and use of colour. Dr Fred G. Meijer ranks the offered painting as a work by Cornelis de Heem created in the artist's heyday around 1670, just after leaving his father's workshop and settling in Utrecht. The still lifes by Cornelis de Heem held at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, the Kunsthalle in Hamburg and the Musée Royaux des Beaux Arts in Brussels all show striking similarities with the present work. Cornelis de Heem, Still Life with Fruit, Oysters and a Rummer

    Est: €40,000 - €45,000

A love of detail, colour and light - in this typical still life after Cornelis de Heem's model, succulent fruit is presented on a stone plinth in front of a niche. A halved pomegranate, a peeled lemon and a still intact orange lie next to two freshly opened oysters and form the lush horizontal base of the pyramidal composition. Behind the fruit, a rummer glass has been placed in a slightly raised position. The reflections in the water within the glass emphasise the contrast between the light foreground and dark background, thereby increasing the dynamism of the composition. This lighting not only contributes to the overall aesthetic, but also reinforces the symbolic message of the work, which contrasts the transience of life with the richness and joy of sensual experience. This unsigned painting is recognised by Fred Meijer and the RKD as an autograph work by Cornelis de Heem.

    Est: €50,000 - €60,000

Signed lower right: G De Heem Cornelis de Heem came from a family of artists steeped in tradition, all of whose members specialised in the depiction of opulent flower and fruit still lifes. His father, Jan Davidsz de Heem, ran a flourishing workshop in Antwerp, where his son Cornelis also worked. Despite the similarities in subject matter, the son's works are easy to distinguish from those of his outstanding father. In Cornelis' work, the contrast between light and dark is more pronounced and his colour palette also consists of darker colours, often with a dark green as the dominant basic tone - as is also the case in this painting. His compositions are more reduced and compact than his father's, but he comes very close to him in his painting skills. Cornelis was admitted to the Antwerp guild as a master in 1660. Apart from a stay in Leiden from 1676 to 1681, he never left the city.

Signed lower left: C. de Heem f Cornelis de Heem was born in Leiden in 1631 as the scion of a distinguished family of artists and the son of the famous still life painter Jan Davidsz de Heem. Cornelis received his first training as a painter in his father's studio in Antwerp. His name appears in the registers of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke as of 1660. This was followed by longer stays in other Dutch art centres such as Utrecht and the Hague. In the early 1680s he returned to Antwerp, where he remained until the end of his life. His main focus was on still lifes of fruit, sometimes supplemented by flowers, other foods such as lobsters and oysters, and decorative tableware. In this case it is a Venetian glass, the lustre of which enlivens the darker background and echoes that of the silver plate in the foreground. In his best works, Cornelis comes very close to his father. In the present painting with its detailed berries and fruits, some of which are cut to display the juicy flesh, he also pays homage to his father with the large sunflower, which appears very often in Jan Davidz's paintings from the late Antwerp period.

Cornelis de Heem: Still Life with Oranges, Roses and Flowers on a Stone Ledge with Berries in a Wanli Bowl, a Peeled Lemon, Cherries and Gooseberries

    Est: €60,000 - €80,000

HEEM, CORNELIS DE 1631 Leiden - 1695 Antwerp Title: Still Life with Oranges, Roses and Flowers on a Stone Ledge with Berries in a Wanli Bowl, a Peeled Lemon, Cherries and Gooseberries. Date: around 1665. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 67 x 55cm. Notation: Signed lower right: C. De Heem f. Frame: Framed. Provenance: around 1950 Kunsthandel A. Staal, Amsterdam; Private collection; Auction Christie's, Amsterdam 13.11.1995; Private ownership, Germany. This work is listed in the online database of the RKD, The Hague, figure number 6433. A feast for (almost) all the senses is this magnificent, brilliantly painted still life by the Antwerp painter Cornelis de Heem. Through the mediation of the eye, the viewer thinks he can smell the fragrance of the blossoms and the half-peeled orange. Wild strawberries, gooseberries, cherries and oranges as well as the blackberries, which can only be recognised at second glance against the dark wall, show off their taste. The strikingly natural surfaces of the flowers and fruits, as well as the silk bow and the Chinese wan-li plate with blue and white decoration - evidence of the orderly, cultivated human hand - convey a multifaceted tactile experience. And the eye feasts; it may "stroll" through this arranged chaos and always discover something new. All the assembled flora is identifiable and representatives of the fauna also cavort in the splendour: here a white butterfly that has settled on a rose branch, there a snail that crawls down on this very branch. At the same time, the arrangement conveys a latent instability and volatility: the exquisite, precious plate stands - intentionally? - at an angle on half a slice of orange; the peeled orange peel, on whose inner, white skin the hanging cherries cast a shadow, threatens to become overweight. In a moment it will plunge with the cut-off fruit cap from the stone parapet on which it lies. Will the orange and a blossom or two then also fall over the near edge? The precious plate placed so wobbly on the corner of the parapet seems in danger. But the upper part of the arrangement is safe and hangs on the wall as a bouquet with the blue bow on a sturdy iron nail. The painter of this impressive painting is Cornelis de Heem, the son of the probably most famous still life painter of the "Golden Age" Jan Davidzoon de Heem (1606 - 1684). Cornelis was trained in his father's workshop in Antwerp, and in 1630 he was accepted as a master by the St. Luke's Guild there. Like his father, Cornelis de Heem was active in both the northern and southern Netherlands. Between 1667 and at least 1687 he can be found in Utrecht and The Hague. It is possible that this painting was created during his time in the republican northern provinces, which were under the governorship of the House of Orange. The fruit so centrally placed in the magnificent painting was a symbol of the ruling house in many works of art. The RKD ( Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie) dates the painting to around 1665, which may correspond to a creation in the northern provinces. BLUMEN- UND FRUCHTGEHÄNGE UM DIE HEILIGE FAMILIE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 85,5 x 67 cm. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Dr. Klaus Ertz, Lingen, vom 14. Oktober 2022, in Kopie. CORNELIS DE HEEM and DAVID CORNELISZ. DE HEEM (Leiden 1631–1695 Antwerp) (Antwerp 1663–1701 The Hague) Flowers in a glass vase on a stone slab with insects and apricots. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: C DE HEEM. 54.3 × 42.5 cm. Provenance: - Most likely Loveless private collection. - Most likely Christie's, London, 7 July 1929, Lot 65 (as J. van Huysum). - Sir William Churchman private collection, Melton Lodge, 1929. - Thence by family descent, private collection, until 1995. - Sotheby's, London, 6 December 1995, Lot 49. - Johnny van Haeften gallery, London, 2003. - Private collection, Netherlands. - Sotheby's, New York, 29 January 2015, Lot 283. - European private collection. With a detailed written analysis by Dr Fred G. Meijer, 29.7.2020. After examining the original, Dr Fred G. Meijer identifies this colourful and detailed bouquet of flowers in a glass vase on a stone slab as a collaboration between Cornelis Jansz. de Heem and David Cornelisz. de Heem. It was painted in The Hague between ca. 1680 and ca. 1687, the year Cornelis moved to Antwerp. Cornelis Jansz. de Heem was a pupil of his father, the highly praised still life painter Jan Davidsz. de Heem (Utrecht 1606–1684 Antwerp). Like his father, he passed on his artistic knowledge to his son, David Cornelisz. de Heem. The collaboration of father and son, Cornelis and David, is documented in several still lifes, for example in the bouquet of flowers in a glass vase (oil on canvas, ca. 66 x 46 cm) in the Mosigkau Castle in Dessau. This work shows some flowers that are also featured in our version, such as the pink and white rose in the centre, the two narcissi, the two yellow lilies in the lower left and the poppy anemones. Cornelis Jansz. De Heem's painting style is characterised by a richness of detail and a multi-layered glaze technique, which renders subjects like flowers and insects softer and more transparent. In our painting, this can be seen above all in the tulips and orange leaves. Another collaboration between Cornelis and David is a garland of fruit and flowers (oil on canvas, 56 x 69 cm) in the collection of the Hofje van Aerden museum in Leerdam, the Netherlands. --------------- CORNELIS DE HEEM und DAVID CORNELISZ. DE HEEM (Leiden 1631–1695 Antwerpen) (Antwerpen 1663–1701 Den Haag) Blumen in einer Glasvase auf einer Steinplatte mit Insekten und Aprikosen. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts signiert: C DE HEEM. 54,3 × 42,5 cm. Provenienz: - wohl Privatsammlung Loveless. - wohl Auktion Christie's, London, 7.7.1929, Los 65 (als J. van Huysum). - Privatsammlung Sir William Churchman, Melton Lodge, 1929. - Durch Erbschaft, Privatsammlung, bis 1995. - Auktion Sotheby's, London, 6.12.1995, Los 49. - Kunsthandel Johnny van Haeften, London, 2003. - Privatsammlung, Niederlande. - Auktion Sotheby's, New York, 29.1.2015, Los 283.
