Pieter de Josselin de Jong (1861-1906), The children of the Van der Kun family, signed and dated 'P. de Josselin/de Jong/1886.' (lower left), oil on canvas, 156x203 cm, Provenance: -The collection of the family of the sitters. The present lot depicts the three children of Emile Alexis Maria van der Kun (1853-1914) and Maria Elisabeth Joanna Stephania de Bruyn (1857-1917): Jacob Henricus Cornelis Marie (1882-1962), Eugenie Jacoba Theresia Maria (1880-1952) and Regina Eugenia Josepha (1879-1932). The painting has been made in the parental home of the family at the Bezuidenhoutseweg in The Hague. Please compare the present lot to a watercolour by the artist with the same composition in a private collection. Pieter de Josselin de Jong (Sint-Oedenrode 1861–The Hague 1906) grew up in a family of notaries in Sint-Oedenrode in the Dutch province Brabant, in which he was encouraged to draw and paint. After a year of lessons at the art school in the city Den Bosch, he began attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. In the nineteenth century, the city attracted many Dutch artists. De Josselin de Jong focussed on history painting, a genre that allowed him to envision a future for himself, in part because, as he wrote to his parents, ‘there is no master history painter in Holland’. His drawings and paintings of anatomical models, plaster casts and nudes brought him success at the academy. His talent and hard work were rewarded in 1881 with a royal scholarship. This enabled him to develop his painting skills at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris over the course of three years. While in Paris, he first became involved in international exhibitions. Upon his return to the Netherlands in 1883, he settled in The Hague. He soon realised people were not interested in biblical scenes or classical themes. To stay afloat, he painted portraits of nobility, the bourgeoisie, professors, and even members of the royal family. His many extant sketchbooks reveal careful preparation. Page upon page filled with studies of the faces and characteristic poses of his subjects. The final results are executed flawlessly, but, as is common for the genre, allow little individuality. Whenever his finances permitted, De Josselin de Jong paused his commissioned work and took his sketchbook out into the streets. His later works include cityscapes, landscapes, and especially the interiors of factories and workplaces, primarily in England and the Dutch provinces Limburg and Drenthe. The painting in this auction was commissioned by the father of the three depicted children, Emile Alexis Maria van de Kun (1853–1914), a wine trader from Rotterdam. He represented Catholic entrepreneurs and associated with several prominent Catholic families. He was a member of the Tweede Kamer, the Dutch House of Representatives, and later served in the Eerste Kamer, the Senate, for four years. This lot is accompanied by a photocopy of a letter dated 18th January 1886, in which the painter writes to Mr Van der Kun that he ‘agrees with the proposal to wait a few more weeks before painting the children’, and is also planning a visit ‘to meet the models’. The letter is signed by De Josselin de Jong, with his address in The Hague in the Celebestraat. The result is a large painting portraying the children in an informal setting. It avoids the orderly poses typical for portraiture of the time. The final piece closely resembles a watercolour study of the children, whom the painter has perfectly captured: the boy is imagining driving his toy horse as he clutches a whip in his right hand. His sister sits next to him, daydreaming while holding a rose. The other girl is holding on to her doll. The setting at their home on Bezuidenhoutseweg in The Hague is typical for nineteenth-century interiors. This artwork has been in the family since it was painted in 1886.
